How often do you clean out the litter tray?

By that I mean empyting it, washing/cleaning it and refilling with fresh cat litter.

I have two indoor cats using one litter tray. I usually clean it out once a week. However I recently had an op and it's been 2 weeks now. Thinking I will attempt to clean it out tomorrow.

At the moment about 15 times a day..no im not exaggerating. They have always used the same tray (2 cats) but one isn't 100% so thinks it's a game to go in, kick litter everywhere, I clean, he re does etc..sigh

BulletFox · 21/12/2017 08:51

catty I feel your pain.

I just redid the cats box this morning because of a fresh little poo, which nearly made me retch.

The cat needs two trays TBH but I'll think about where to position them best when we're more settled (recent move).

So which kitty litter is best?

I clean the litter tray every day . We have only one cat but I empty the whole tray every evening and wash the tray with zoflora then add the clean litter . I can't stand the smell of cat pee / poo and like her to have a fresh tray daily

Addictedtothisbloodyforum · 21/12/2017 09:24

The tray we have is a covered tray . I can't believe some of you only do a full litter change once a week . I know you say you can't smell it but it really must stink and you are probably just immune to the smell . If strangers came to the house I can guarantee they will smell cat piss ! Cat piss absolutely stinks and it's why I do a full change and clean the tray daily because I can't stand the thought of my house smelling like cat piss !

BulletFox · 21/12/2017 09:33

Addicted yeah, as much as I love her I find her little offerings a bit nasally challenging!!

TheSecondOfHerName · 21/12/2017 10:01

I scoop the poo as soon as she does it. She comes and tells me, but the poo smells strongly enough that I'd know within minutes anyway.

I can't smell the wee at all, and I have a sensitive sense of smell. We've only had her for 11 days, and I couldn't smell her wee when she first arrived. Perhaps it's to do with the type of litter? (we're using Cat's Best Nature Gold). Because I can't smell the wee, I have to actively check for wee clumps 2-3 times a day and remove them.

I haven't emptied & cleaned the tray yet. I can see at the bottom that a few of the pellets have disintegrated into sawdust (from a small wee clump I missed?) so when there's more sawdust I'll empty & clean it.

Wolfiefan - I tried two litter trays for our two cats. They used the one upstairs about once every three weeks!

cattycat83 · 21/12/2017 13:40

Bulletfox it's so hard isnt it? Mine has some sort of oil in his wee which he's doing out of the tray now..not good

EachandEveryone · 21/12/2017 21:43

I can’t smell the pee at all and use Worlds best. I know what cat pee smells like abs honestly u can’t tell. The poo goes down the toilet as soon as they do it. My cube shaped tray comes with a material liner and the full thing gets chucked once a month.

Hulder · 21/12/2017 21:54

3 cats here, 3 trays and also Worlds Best or Cat's Best depending on what I order. That stuff is amazing. There really is no smell compared to other litters.

Scoop out poo and clumps once a day and flush down loo. Replace litter when it starts to look like it needs it - either level getting low or turning dusty. Varies from once a week to once a month depending on which tray it is - one seems v popular, one is used once in a blue moon.

Earslaps · 21/12/2017 22:15

Two kittens, two litter trays and I scoop 3-4 times daily, top up with fresh litter every couple of days and tip all the litter out, wipe down with pet safe disinfectant and refill every 10-14 days.

We use chicken feed as litter, recommended and sold by the rescue. A £10 bag has lasted over a month and a half.

EachandEveryone · 21/12/2017 22:22

What pet save disinfectant do you use?

dementedpixie · 21/12/2017 22:24

I use a litter tray spray from pets at home.

user1468353179 · 21/12/2017 22:29

I change mine every day. I have two cats and they fill one , How do you do it just once a month or si. My two will shit in the shower and pee all over the floor if their trays aren't fresh every day.

cattycat83 · 22/12/2017 07:46

So I'm now baffled by the amount of litters. I currently use cats best but saw this last night
http://m.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/catlitter/tigerino/nuggiess_fine/593079

Anyone used it? My main niggle is the tracking al over the floor..the worlds best now gets rubbish reviews?!

dementedpixie · 22/12/2017 07:50

One of mine doesn't like the Sandy texture of the very fine stuff. I mix worlds best and the cats best pellets in the tray and it seems to work ok although mine are toileting outside a lot more now

Madbengalmum · 22/12/2017 07:53

Two or three times a day. I use layer of newspaper and scoop or two or wood pellets, it cuts down on smell too. This is for two cats and a kitten.

EachandEveryone · 22/12/2017 10:19

Worlds best multiple cats is still the best. I liked the crystals but hated the way it went yellow. We are all once a month st Work. I’m leaving for a few days so I changed today but normally I get a black bag take the clumps out and chuck in the dustbin. No need to change I just top up. It really is that good and the best place to get it is amazon prime.

dementedpixie · 22/12/2017 12:01

Is bitiba not cheaper than amazon?

ShadowsInTheDarkness · 22/12/2017 12:29

We have 3 large covered trays for 4 cats, 3 of whom are indoor cats. I never tip everything out and clean the tray! We mix clumping and antibacterial as this seems to cover the smell. Scoop out poos and wee clumps daily. I half fill the trays so they are really deep (maybe 5 inches of litter) and wipe down the outside, flap and top with anti bac wipes every few days.

It doesnt smell of cat pee, cat pee is such a strong smell and if we go away for the weekend or theres been illness in the house and we havent got round to daily clump removal you can really smell it. So Im confident that my house does not stink of cat pee!

No way would I be tipping it all out of all 3 trays each week to clean the bottom though, would cost a fortune and we shell out enough on litter as it is!

EachandEveryone · 22/12/2017 14:33

I subscribe once a month it’s just less than £26 with next day delivery

Addictedtothisbloodyforum · 23/12/2017 20:04

Sorry but I disagree . If you don't empty the tray daily then your house WILL smell of cat pee . The reason you say you can't smell it is because you are used to the smell . I only got our cat cos our dcs wanted a cat but she bloody stinks . She only poops once per day and wees three times in 24 hrs but it does smell . When she passes il never have another cat because I can't stand the smell. How people have 4 or more cats is beyond me ? My friend has 3 cats and her house stinks so bad of cat pee . She is a clean freak and I know her home is clean but the cat piss smell turns my stomach . She uses plug ins and various devices to disguise the smellbut they don't work

dementedpixie · 23/12/2017 20:22

But the litter some of us use is a clumping litter so pee is not left in the tray to smell. It is removed as well as poo. Maybe you have an extreme sense of smell! Some litter is also better then others at controlling smells. Catsan, in my experience, goes smelly very quickly. The eco clumping stuff I use does not smell. I have 2 neutered male cats

Addictedtothisbloodyforum · 23/12/2017 20:40

What litter works best on smells ? I currently use the silicone crystals as was told they were the best but I empty litter box daily and refill with fresh litter . I am so paranoid that people will smell cat pee in my beautiful home. I do have an OCD thing with regards smell and the house being clean and tidy so maybe it's being irrational? X

MsHomeSlice · 23/12/2017 20:50

They get changed when used, I have about a billionty and eleven trays and two cats. I use the pink non clumping gravel or the white catsan type...the one they have on offer in aldi atm is exactly the same as catsan but considerably cheaper

I keep two trays in the house, the rest are ready to go in the washhouse shed, and the used ones are emptied and rinsed, left to dry and then refilled.

Handy tip for cats that like to pee over the edge is to put a smaller tray inside a bigger, sightly deeper one, and then if they back their furry little bahookies over the edge at least it goes into the bigger tray and not over your floors.
