Unexpected birth

Not long ago we adopted a cat from a friend of a friend of a friend. Apparently she was spayed. Given that half an hour ago ds1 called me to tell me she had just given birth to three kittens in my bed, I tell think we can safely assume she was not.

DH is there and I am on my way home. I have told him to make sure they are warm, away from the other cat and dc, that the mum has food and drink and her litter tray close by, and to keep an eye to make sure the kittens are alive and nursing. I will stop off my way home to get things we need but I don't know what we need. Does the mum need special food and/ or drink? I was planning to get a big pet bed and line it with old towels, (atm they are apparently in a makeshift pile of blankets) is that OK? What temperature should their room be?

Medium term, there is no way anyone can stay home in the day time to keep an eye, how much food will the mum need left with her each day? There will be no one home for about 8 hours each day. Can she have dry food as well as tinned?

Longer term, I assume we have to keep the kittens with the mum for a while until they can be rehome via a reputable rescue place... how long is that? When can she be safely spayed? She has been treated with flea repellent spot on as normal since she came to live with us, will that have hurt the kittens?

I am in absolute shock. Will be at the shopping centre en route to home in about 30 mins so any advice on essentials to buy before then would be hugely appreciated. I have no idea how to look after newborn kittens other than keep them warm and in a private place. Help me please!

//not a cat person//

You need to keep a kitten, not for you, but for DS.

MrsBertBibby · 16/11/2017 13:42

It does seem a shame not to keep one, so your son has that reminder of how completely he was trusted. That's pretty special for anyone.

harrietm87 · 16/11/2017 14:07

Aw I think your DH’s heart will melt as they get a bit bigger.

Can’t wait for more pics!

sinceyouask · 16/11/2017 14:38

That's very true Bert

You're so keeping a kitten OP! Your DH doesn't stand a chance.

dailydance · 16/11/2017 16:11

I’d be inclined to keep one for your son seeing as they are having such a positive effect on him :)

sinceyouask · 16/11/2017 20:36

Two of them have been reserved by my friend tonight and I said to dh "what if we keep the other one?" and he grumped a bit and said "well you would have to look after it"... so that's progress. We'll see how ds1 feels...

A spay is the complete removal of the womb and ovaries so not something that can reverse itself.

Just so you know, the kitten milk sold in bottles in pet shops isn't suitable for neonatal kittens. If you need kitten milk for any reason, you need to buy kitten formula. I'm sure you won't need it though.

They are so adorable!

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/11/2017 20:45

Well I'm glad that's sorted out. I hate loose ends.

IrritatedUser1960 · 16/11/2017 20:54

Stupidly cute.

lljkk · 16/11/2017 22:04

So pleased for your DS & his kitten whisperer talents.

Leviticus · 16/11/2017 22:28

How lovely OP, two for your friend and one for you. What a perfect outcome.

ElizaDontlittle · 17/11/2017 09:22

If you end up needing real kitten milk I have some, available for postage - thought I would need but didn't with my recent addition (weaned too early).

TheHodgeHeg · 17/11/2017 11:17

Too cute!

sinceyouask · 15/12/2017 14:33

As they will be 5 weeks old on Monday and have started exploring and trying a bit of cat food and are just so so cute it seemed like a good time for an update. I haven't got a good pic of the one who's staying with us right now but I will get one and post it this weekend :)

They are very cute! You can see how small Mum is in comparison to the kittens. How is your DS getting on with his kitten?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/12/2017 16:41

Thanks for the update. I bet theyre getting into all sorts of mischief, aren't they.
They look like little bags of troubleGrin

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/12/2017 16:42

I wouldn't be able to stop squeeeeeeezing them.

theliterarycat · 16/12/2017 00:00

Ah so you are keeping one? Twas obvious. My dh tried to object too many times and always failed, because he fell in love too.

They are so cute and something your son will remember forever. (Something good out of not an ideal situation).

sinceyouask · 18/12/2017 13:37

Our one is the monkey of the bunch, forever out of their box exploring, likes to chase feet! The other two play with each other a lot but I haven't seen them leave the box of their own accord yet. (I may have built them all a set of steps back into the box with DVD cases which dh laughed at...)
DS1 and the kitten are in love. TBH all the kittens are OK with ds1 handling them! He's a cat whisperer, I have decided.

They are blooming gorgeous. What’s the kittens name? Any comeback from the perso who gave you her?

sinceyouask · 19/12/2017 13:17

The mama cat is Lola, and our baby will either be Lucy (if I am right about her being a girl) or Leo (if I am wrong as is quite possible). The person who is adopting the other two kittens is coming round tonight so maybe she'll name them then!

The family we got Lola from are Very Surprised and Were Sure She Was Spayed When All The Others Were Done Hmm. I can't even be arsed to make an issue out of it. Lola will be spayed very soon and Lucy/Leo will be done as soon as they are old enough.
