Unexpected birth

Not long ago we adopted a cat from a friend of a friend of a friend. Apparently she was spayed. Given that half an hour ago ds1 called me to tell me she had just given birth to three kittens in my bed, I tell think we can safely assume she was not.

DH is there and I am on my way home. I have told him to make sure they are warm, away from the other cat and dc, that the mum has food and drink and her litter tray close by, and to keep an eye to make sure the kittens are alive and nursing. I will stop off my way home to get things we need but I don't know what we need. Does the mum need special food and/ or drink? I was planning to get a big pet bed and line it with old towels, (atm they are apparently in a makeshift pile of blankets) is that OK? What temperature should their room be?

Medium term, there is no way anyone can stay home in the day time to keep an eye, how much food will the mum need left with her each day? There will be no one home for about 8 hours each day. Can she have dry food as well as tinned?

Longer term, I assume we have to keep the kittens with the mum for a while until they can be rehome via a reputable rescue place... how long is that? When can she be safely spayed? She has been treated with flea repellent spot on as normal since she came to live with us, will that have hurt the kittens?

I am in absolute shock. Will be at the shopping centre en route to home in about 30 mins so any advice on essentials to buy before then would be hugely appreciated. I have no idea how to look after newborn kittens other than keep them warm and in a private place. Help me please!

pumpkinpie5 - we are a specialist neuter clinic and spay literally thousands of cats a year and we spay as soon as the mum can be removed from the kittens for a few hours - so at 3 to 4 weeks. for feral and stray cats we spay the day the kittens are born before they go out to foster. It's terrible advice to say wait until the milk supply has dried -- she will likely be pregnant again by then.

Spaying does not affect milk supply.

I'll call our vet later and ask when they'd recommend.
Mum likes to go out and about and I'm afraid she's just not going to be able to do that until she's been spayed! (DH asked me if we could feed her a contraceptive pill. Because DH is insane.) If it is OK to give her the run of the house though, and not have to shut her in one room with the kittens to keep the big girl away from them, that will be easier on her, but she'll still be a bugger to keep from sneaking outside.

I would be livid at anyone who gave me a pregnant cat and claimed it had been spayed. In fact I'd be demanding that the idiot the cat came from cover the cost of the kitten food/milk/vaccinations and spaying of the female.

EachandEveryone · 14/11/2017 12:28

I would to

Allergictoironing · 14/11/2017 13:03

Not as insane as it may sound. Don't know about cats as every queen I know has been spayed, but I know dog owners who give theirs an annual injection to prevent "accidents" but don't want to spay as they will want to breed from those bitches a little later on. So contraceptives for pets is a "thing"

We have a cat that came to us as a kitten from a friend. They had waited too long to spay their cat and she'd got pregnant. In the brief interim between her litter arriving and her spaying appointment, their toddler let her out without them seeing. Litter two, stupidly soon after litter one.

sinceyouask · 14/11/2017 21:38

She's just going to have to deal with staying indoors til she can get spayed. They all still seem ok, she's eating and drinking loads and used her litter tray, the kittens are either feeding or sleeping. She keeps putting them on ds1's lap if he sits on the floor though! Earlier he sat down, she carried them to him one by one, went and ate a load of food then climbed into his lap and fed them all there.

They're very cute and I swear have changed in 24 hours!

Was ds her favourite before?.

HemanOrSheRa · 14/11/2017 21:53

Aw that is so sweet - she is giving her babies to your DS to mind while she eats and takes a little break Smile. She must trust him very much .

MrsBertBibby · 14/11/2017 21:55

Too cute!

reservoircats · 14/11/2017 22:03

How sweet. I’d secretly love for that to happen to me! If you need any advice it is worth looking on YouTube for feeding etc, they should be weighed often and should gain weight very quickly.

sinceyouask · 15/11/2017 08:48

Ds1 has always been her favourite but tbh she's been pretty independent since she came to us- I think that's why we had no idea she was pregnant! She's very cuddly now though. Ds1 has some issues but with animals he comes into his own and he is loving being loved by her and so so proud that she gives him her kittens :)

Mother cat is thinking .. You may not be the man who got me into this mess but you can pay for his sins ....

ladymelbourne1926 · 15/11/2017 09:34

Grin lol Spartacus, was thinking the same thing!
Sounds like Mum is doing really well. Kittens are gorgeous.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/11/2017 00:36

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
. What a gorgeous surprise.

ElizaDontlittle · 16/11/2017 06:09

Oh they are gorgeous and I love the story about your DS. How old is he?
Mum looks very serene and the kittens are adorable. What a shock though. Keep us supplied with pictures!!!

sinceyouask · 16/11/2017 09:50

DS1 is 11 (and a half, he would say the half is very important). He really can be a difficult child (diagnosed adhd with possible ODD and finding transition to secondary very challenging) but my goodness, he is being amazing with the cat and kittens. He's like a different person :)

Hoping to get some better photos tonight as they are definitely changing noticeably day by day. I have some friends coming over who are very interested in adopting them when they're ready to go...

SO cute.

When I was about 7 I come home to a cat under the duvet with 4 kittens.

Talk to your vet, if she gets pregnant again the vet can spay and 'take care' of the pregnancy. In fact you will probably be asked what you want if they find she is pregnant.

Also the other cat shouldn't be a danger if the cats normally get on OK. In feral cats the kittens can be looked after by more than one cat, often two mum cats will share their kittens.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/11/2017 12:21

Clutching at straws here as I know nothing about cats or kittens, I just coo at themGrin, but could mum have been spayed and its not worked or could it have reversed itself.

sinceyouask · 16/11/2017 12:55

IDK, can that happen? Thinking about the home she came from, though, it's just more likely that she wasn't and rather than tell me that- which would have been fine, I could have had her spayed without panicking too much about the cost and certainly wouldn't have not taken her because of that- they fibbed as they thought that would be easier.

She seems well, and the kittens are OK so far, and rehoming them should be straightforward enough (DH said "don't even think about it" when I raised the prospect of maybe keeping one Sad), so it hasn't been a complete disaster, but still, there are more than enough kittens in the world so avoiding this situation altogether would have been better.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/11/2017 13:17

Oh go on. You have to keep at least one .... :).

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/11/2017 13:23

Don't worry, choose a kitten & just keep it.

I don't go in for all this man of the house stuff, I tell Dh he's in charge & do what I want to anyway.

ownedbySWD · 16/11/2017 13:25

Aw, we adopted a mother/daughter pair and it was so fun to watch their relationship develop. The kitten was about 9 weeks when we got them.

sinceyouask · 16/11/2017 13:30

Haha, DH is so not the boss of the house- but we took in mama cat against his wishes and it would be a bit mean to insist we keep one of the kittens if he doesn't want to. That said, once the kittens are up and about and playing they will be sooooo cute he might change his mind!

OP posts:
YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/11/2017 13:33

Of course he will change his mind. You and DS need to start plotting your moves now ...
