Pawsitive thoughts for Fattycat's heart scan tomorrow.

I totally panicked when the vet said the scan wasn’t actually till next week so got her booked to a independent cardiologist tomorrow. (One who doesn’t charge extra just to stay with her!) I may be clutching at straws but I think the fluid in her lungs may be due to fluid overload during her dental. As she’s just Too well and respiratory rate is normal. But please keep all your paws crossed for my darling girl.

I’m sorry it’s not better news, Toddler.

MsMims · 10/11/2017 20:00

I’m sorry too Toddler but hopefully the drugs will work for her and improve things. You’ve been very conscientious to have got this addressed before any real symptoms have shown themselves. As mentioned on your other thread (sorry I didn’t have chance to get online til today so didn't see your reply), I have a cat with HCM who was in congestive heart failure 2 1/2 years ago so there is hope. There was lots of adjusting his meds at the beginning but he’s now very stable on Atenolol, Frusemide and Clopidogrel.

thecatneuterer · 10/11/2017 20:03

Sorry it's not better news. But you're right, as long as she isn't feeling ill that's the main thing.

Wolfiefan · 10/11/2017 20:05

So sorry to read this update.
Here's hoping the medication works well and she stays happy.

TroysMammy · 10/11/2017 20:19

I'm sorry she has this. it's tough and emotional. I found Lick-e-Lix makes them a bit more forgiving when you have to hold them to give daily meds.

Sorry it's not good news. Here's hoping the meds help her and she has time for lots more love. Whatever happens she has been well cared for and loved by you especially after such a rubbish time beforehand.

cozietoesie · 10/11/2017 21:45

Yes. She’s a happy girl now, coddled in a sea of love. Smile

Weedsnseeds1 · 10/11/2017 22:04

Oh, poor Fatty and poor you too. I hope the drugs kick in quickly and start to take effect for the positive.
Whatever the future brings, she is loved and no longer a kitten machine. She's adored, indulged and admired by all of us.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/11/2017 22:24

I'm so sorry it wasn't better news Toddler. All the best to you all, especially darling Fatty.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/11/2017 22:52

Thankyou all. MRS.thats what she’s been put on, so I’m glad to hear your Cat is stable. Fortunately I think we’ve got it before she’s actually gone into heart failure. I suspect that all the sedation and stress from her jaw, in the spring are what tipped her over the edge. As no one was concerned about her murmur before that. The rescue she came from would also have picked it up, had it been so severe then.

I think the vet said it was always going to happen for her. But made worse by her poor start in life. 😡 if it’s hereditary her kittens will probably be affected as well. She also said that it may have been holding her back. So it will be interesting to see if her behaviour changes.

Thankyou for all your support. I’ve got a plan for the pills so hopefully it will work. The one thing I was dreading was her breeding medication 3 x daily as that would be impossible for me. But twice daily is fine.
However long we have left. She could not be more loved. And I’ll always cherish her memory. Need to try and get some nice pictures of her!

Best vibes for fattycat.

Idea of cat dating Grin one of the neighbours told me she wished my cat and her cat would get on as they're both so sweet.

Apparently he hisses at her when she tentatively approaches to see him. Must be playing hard to get.

MsMims · 11/11/2017 00:25

Yes you’ve done really well to catch it now as the prognosis isn’t usually good once they’ve gone into heart failure. The twice daily medicating is definitely manageable (we started with HyperCard which was a nightmare to break down into the right dose and needed to be given every 8 hours!) It’s amazing how tiny the doses can be reduced down to as maintenance too - invest in a sharp knife ready to cut 20mg tablets into four pieces!

Will your own vet take over managing her from here or do you think you’ll keep her under the care of the cardiologist?

cozietoesie · 11/11/2017 00:31

I’m not sure I would see a 20mg tablet, let alone cut it in four! Grin

TroysMammy · 11/11/2017 08:00

It is a bit difficult to cut the clopidogrel into exactly four but a sharp knife can help. Iirc you can get liquid furosemide if the dosage is not standard as the tablets are tiny and impossible to cut cleanly. I used to use a daily pill box to place them all in so less stress for you and the cat at tablet time.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2017 09:15

I’ve got a pill cutter. Which makes it easier and am going to get a docket box to makes it easier. The atenalol is the problem at the minute, the tablets are tiny and she’s on 1/4 of a tablet! I’m a children’s nurse so used to tiny doses and getting medication down a reluctant patient!

I’m presuming that once she’s stable my own vet will take her over. I’m so glad I went over the vets head and self referred to this cardiologist and didn’t wait till next week. The lady who runs the rescue they came from is horrified they did her dental knowing her heart murmur was that bad. And I’m not happy that she’d had a heath check only 2 weeks before and I wasn’t told it was a grade 4. She is registered with another vet, because they have out of hours care and are brilliant. So I might just go with them.

Big furry hugs to you all. Take comfort in the fact that she's got a loving caring happy home with you now. 🐟 for Fatty (& Snorg), and 🍫 for you.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2017 09:24

She’s being even more affectionate than usual at the minute, but looking at me through narrowed eyes!

YesItsMeIDontCare · 11/11/2017 09:34

She's probably hoping love bombing you will mean you won't take her back to the v.e.t.s. 😁

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2017 09:51

Ha ha yes I think so. Just tried to catch her to give her her pills and she’s gone thundering upstairs with Snorg in tow for support!

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2017 12:10

Cozie. I can barely see the atenalol! They are the smallest pills I’ve ever seen. I’m wondering if I can get syrup as I think that will be easier for her.

Seriously - will she take a treat? Something that small should be easy to disguise.
