Do neutered male cats normally masturbate?

Our 5 year old cat has taken to 'pleasuring himself' shamelessly against fleecy blankets. It is quite a spectacle... He finishes off by licking the 'result of his efforts'. Often over and over again. Is this normal behaviour or has he just turned into an old perv? Part of me thinks - fair enough - but it is pretty gross. I grew up with cats and don't remember this......!

I've had cats for 41 years - all but one have been female, and I've never known this. My old boy (the only male I've ever had) is too much of a gentleman to do dirty things

I’ve never seen cats so this and I’ve had quite a few!
Dogs are another matter. We had an unneutered male that used to hump my leg constantly.

I came on to say 'my darling old boy did, god rest his soul', only to notice my comment on page 1 of this zombie thread. Strange one to resurrect... or not? Maybe someone has a rather odd kink..

Ah.. it was creepy and a little ick but desperately miss him now he's gone!
