How on earth did you name your cat?

Ours is brown. I'm really struggling to name her. She came from a rescue, but as it was a litter, they all had really silly names! Hers is Cello... Seems very masculine Grin she doesn't know her name. She is so little.

Ours is a Bengal so we decided he needed a naughty name.

He's called Bertie.

He is very naughty & cheeky but very affectionate & has a lovely nature.

My husband had been to Dudley the day we got him, so he was Dudley. Nell was named after husband and Fisher was a cat on a Whiskas calendar and I just like the name. Not sure how Chloe got her name as she came with husband.

Dudley unfortunately went to sleep last year but he was called tappy toes (his claws became long in old age). Nell is referred to as Scruff Pot or Stoner as she has a dazed look about her and Fisher is Fishermaroo Grin

Our 6 month old rescue kitten was called Georgina in the rescue home. She is now called Donut. Because she has less brains than a donut. And we are always saying “don’t do that, you Donut”!! Saying that, it only took her two weeks to train us how to play fetch with her toy mouse Easter Smile

Mine is black and white like a pint of Guinness, so her name is Lulu. Lulu Guinness.

I'd call her Sable.

DH vetoed calling ours The Lady Fuchsia Groan, the meanie. We went for Scully. The next cat will be Taggie. Hence why I'm voting for Chessie Wink

Mine's a Persian and her pedigree name from her breeder was mamma Mia. So I call her Mia. Mia was a name I loved but couldn't use with my surname for a child (think Rosemary's baby) so it was perfect for the cat. It really suits her and I'm glad I got to use it.

That dark brown X on her face makes me think of the X men, so storm or rogue ?

Gorgeous!

I would avoid colour related names as there's a very high chance she will be black as an adult and you'd then look silly with a black cat called caramel etc.

Mine are all soft as grease, friendly balls of fluff and are all named after vicious warriors or communist dictators. It tickles me.

That said they are usually known as Womble, Barrel and Oh You Gorgeous Boy.

My boy is called Blue. He's a Russian Blue and it seemed a fitting name. Answers to booboo or blob.

Ours is called Jaffa! He's a huge ginger tom and it was the name the rescue centre gave him and it suits him, we have a cake related surname and we thought it was funny to name him Jaffa Cake, so we did!

@CatchingBabies since when have brown kittens been black adults? I've honestly never heard of that.

CatchingBabies · 13/10/2017 09:58

All cats are genetically black (or red but that's a complex sex linked gene) and then other genes change the black. So if a cat has a tabby gene it covers the black with tabby stripes, if a cat has a dilute gene it lightens the black to grey. If a cat has the white spotting gene it covers some of the black with white and so on. Cats have many many genes affecting their colour but take it all away and underneath they are genetically black.

Chocolate is possible, it's the Burmese gene but it isn't present in the moggy population. The kitten might stay brown but actually 99% will darken to black as that's their colour and it's just not developed fully yet. The same way Siamese kittens are born pure white and the colour develops (in certain places) later.

It's baffling but very interesting. I'm a self confessed genetics geek lol.
