Flea treatment that works - is there no alternative but to get it from the vet??

We adopted 2 older kittens 3 months ago. Both neutered, both been vet checked before we got them. One has had a vet check since because of a very minor injury. The vet would only prescribe flea treatment for the cat she has seen - she gave us 3 months worth so we treated both cats, but now they need re-treating and we've only one ampoule left. So we are faced with taking a perfectly healthy cat to the vet and paying for a consultation just so they can be prescribed flea treatment. Is there any alternative?

Some vets do free checks in this scenario. When are their boosters due? The vet is not allowed to give out POMs to animals they have not seen.

I use advantage and buy it online

Silvercatowner · 01/10/2017 09:47

Thanks. So is it not possible to access flea treatment that works from anywhere else?

Take the second cat to the vet and get her a prescription. You'll then be able to get prescriptions for both cats without having to take them back in until their next annual check up. You don't have to take the cats to the vet for every prescription.

Silvercatowner · 01/10/2017 09:48

Does Advantage work?

If you want prescription strength treatment you need a vets prescription. I don't think you can get it without one.

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/10/2017 09:49

What Ollivander said. (Crossed posts with yours so you might not have seen it.)

dementedpixie · 01/10/2017 09:49

I took my kittens to the vet when I first got them so i can now just buy the flea treatment monthly without having to take them. I use advocate spot on

9GreenBottles · 01/10/2017 09:50

Buy it online, you have to give some details of the cats. NEVER buy Bob Martins!

Ollivander84 · 01/10/2017 09:50

Advantage works great for mine, he has a bad flea allergy and he's never had fleas since I got him

reallybadidea · 01/10/2017 09:52

As far as I can tell Advantage is the same as Advocate from the vet, just without the worm stuff in it.

MrsWooster · 01/10/2017 09:52

I'll third or fourth advantage. Available online or fetch or pah. Used to use frontline and it was hopeless.

Silvercatowner · 01/10/2017 09:54

Thanks everyone. I do want to do the best for them both (and for me - when a previous cat had fleas I was bitten to pieces). I'll see whether the vet will do a free consult.

Pets at home sell advantage without needing a vets prescription. You have to give them quite a few details about your pets history but they store it so you will only need to do this once. Which reminds me I need to go today and get some doses for my two cats and a dog. It's so easy and convenient.

Lanaa · 01/10/2017 09:57

You can get it from Pets at home. It's locked up and you have to tell them your Pet's life story, but they will sell it to you.

Thanks! Off to Pets at Home!

My vet will sell it to me as long as they've seen the animal recently.

lavenderbees · 01/10/2017 10:10

Advantage but buy it online! You will pay 3 times more from the shops. £8.99 online for 4 treatments.

Ollivander84 · 01/10/2017 10:24

Get it online!! Pets at home it's about £20, online it's about £8

LivingInMidnight · 01/10/2017 10:46

I'm too late, but the vet that checked them initially might have been able to prescribe. There was a point where my vet had only met my girl so I used the vet they were registered at by the shelter to get prinovox for the boy. I just had him transferred to my name.

Weedsnseeds1 · 01/10/2017 12:13

You will need to know the cat's weight to buy on line or at pah.

NoCryLilSoftSoft · 01/10/2017 12:16

Confused my vet practise just gives me what I ask for when I call in. I don't bring 2 cats and a dog with me to get flea treatment!

Probably because they've seen and treated your animals in the past.

Thanks everyone - really helpful!
