Flea treatment that works - is there no alternative but to get it from the vet??

We adopted 2 older kittens 3 months ago. Both neutered, both been vet checked before we got them. One has had a vet check since because of a very minor injury. The vet would only prescribe flea treatment for the cat she has seen - she gave us 3 months worth so we treated both cats, but now they need re-treating and we've only one ampoule left. So we are faced with taking a perfectly healthy cat to the vet and paying for a consultation just so they can be prescribed flea treatment. Is there any alternative?

I use Advantage too. Bought online. Boys have never had a flea infestation.

I used to use Advantage and worked fine here ( SW), switched to Bravecto only because it treats ticks as well. Because of where I live ( lots of deer, woods, bracken), my boy was picking up ticks. For some reason they revolt me in a way that fleas don't!

I agree with the tick thing, they're horrible! I had to get someone else to remove one i found inside the boy's ear.

I was using advantage alternated with advocate/prinovox before bravecto. Only changed because one of my cats can't cope with monthly spot ons.

I pay monthly to my vets and pick it up every three months without taking the cats in
