Any tips on keeping your abode smelling not of cat?

I don't know if it's the weather or the fact that I'm in a flat and I now have two. I've been out 16 hours today and it's been emotionally draining all I want is a cuddle off my babies and a glass of red. Instead I'm emptying bins, washing cushions and throws and disinfecting everywhere. Funnily it's the hallway where the baby doesn't go that hits you as soon as you walk in. There's no air in there. I think it's the food. Even the dry food smells through the packets! How do you keep on top of it?

I think a flat all shut up for 16 hours in this heat is going to smell fusty.

Sounds like you are already doing the 'right' stuff.

I air the house out as much as possible, don't leave wet food down during the day, scoop litter trays at least 2x a day but sometimes it still smells of cat.

I got two of these last week and they really do seem to work:

I find it depends on the cat litter itself. Catsan really stinks. It's horrific. But the cheap pellet stuff from Tesco doesn't stink and lasts longer. Every day I get rid of the chunks and that's it.
Cat puke stinks

Yea be careful with disinfectant around cats it Can be dangerous for them because of the benzalkonium chloride found in some disinfectants and anti bac stuff.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/07/2017 13:42

We don't have a problem with Catsan, it's the only one we've found that His Lordship approves of and doesn't make the bathroom smell.

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2017 14:48

Do you get the. One with the pad attached?

OP posts:
isseywithcats · 06/07/2017 15:31

the best £99 i ever spent was in argos a bex bissell electric carpet shampooer, easy to use just like hoovering and i put nice smelling washing liquid in it, give the carpets a going over once a month and my whole house smells of lavender, (i use aldis, ) and as i foster i can have up to 7-8 cats in the house with my three

isseywithcats · 06/07/2017 15:32

and basically any disinfectant that goes cloudy when you add water to it is toxic to cats

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/07/2017 16:15

Is that right? Zoflora goes cloudy,I'll stop using it.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/07/2017 16:16

While Zoflora does go cloudy in water, this is down to the fragrances being insoluble in water and is not due to the product containing phenol

Seems it's ok

sodablackcurrant · 06/07/2017 16:23

Ugh, glad you pet owners are on to it.

I do not visit my friends anymore, they come to me instead and are very welcome. Their flat/houses are just awfully whiffy, but they don't notice. I do. Talking cats and dogs here.

Ugh ugh ugh. And the hairs OMG.

But that is just me obviously. Go on, bite me back.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/07/2017 16:40

Soda I'm a cat owner but I have friends who horrify me with their lack of cleanliness with their pets.

sodablackcurrant · 06/07/2017 16:46

Dame,

Good to hear that you see it from both sides. I have no issue with pets belonging to others, but I have to say SOME of my good friends just do not get it and do not smell their darlings either.

I was not being provocative, just realistic from my perspective. Ugh sorry.

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2017 17:04

I think most of us are paranoid about that

OP posts:
Amee1992x · 06/07/2017 20:17

There's a pet friendly zoflora that's the one I use

isseywithcats · 08/07/2017 21:38

soda if you thought my house wasnt good enough for you because i have cats i would be quite happy for you not to visit me as my friends come to see me the person not to see how clean or nice smelling my house is as it happens it is clean and dosent smell bad

issey,

It is not my friends abode I care about, it is the stench and the hairs. I am sure you make sure your pets don't smell and drop hairs everywhere. I would go to see you!

But do get paranoid about it if you want. I won't visit my minging cat/dog friends' houses anymore. Sorry if that offends you, I know not all pet owners are like this, but after a while some of them just don't notice anymore, it is all the pet, the pet.

So they come to me. Win win.

PhoenixJasmine · 09/07/2017 06:23

Soda, the thread wasn't asking people's opinions about levels of hygiene in pet-owning households - it is discussing hints and tips for pet owners. Seeing as you are clearly not in that category, unless you have any household cleaning advice relating to pets to contribute, I suggest you disengage - because you are being 'deliberately provocative' with your OMG my cat friends are mingerz pet hair how awful posts. There is no obligation to post on every thread you read, you can just move on if you don't have anything useful to contribute. Your posts come across to me as goady (and quite frankly rude - the conversation wasn't about you) and do not add anything to the ongoing discussion.

Back to the topic of the thread - people are obsessed with Zoflora on here! Erm, what is it? Is it room fragrance or a cleaning product? If it's a cleaning product how are you using it?

EachandEveryone · 09/07/2017 13:06

I just know it's in Poundland and I put it on a cloth and wipe everything down with it after I've cleaned.the smell doesn't last that long.

My flat is much better. I'm sure one of them had a big.

I was so paranoid I'm just off to pick up my Bosch Athelat as recommended on here! Luckily my friend got me a tescos discount and it was much cheaper than John Lewis.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/07/2017 13:24

Well said PhoenixJasmine!

Soda, your friends are probably glad you don't visit anymore, I know I would be!

sodablackcurrant · 09/07/2017 14:20

There is no need to be personally insulting to get your point across.

I don't like the smell of my cat/dog owning friends houses. That's it. So they come to me now and tell me I am nuts, there is no smell and there are no hairs in their houses, and I am delusional. All lighthearted but still.

I will do what I want and will not go somewhere I don't feel comfortable.

BTW friends houses are very clean, unfortunately I get the pet smell every time. But maybe I am super sensitive to the whiff, I probably am.

No harm done.

Ruhrpott · 09/07/2017 14:28

I bought a litter locker which works really well and use wood pellet litter. I also open windows a lot.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/07/2017 15:14

I don't think soda said anything wrong. She started out by saying well done for recognising the issue and sorting it Confused

chocolatespiders · 09/07/2017 15:19

We use wood litter from Wilko smells of pine . Use nappy bags to take the poo out daily.

Madbengalmum · 09/07/2017 15:23

The only way to get rid of smell for indoor cats is to empty their litter every day. I put a layer of newspaper on the bottom of the tray and then one scoop of wood pellets on top of that. I empty when used and no smell.

Madbengalmum · 09/07/2017 15:25

Zoflora is only toxic if they walk on it when wet and lick their paws etc.If it allowed to dry, then it isnt toxic.
