Are black and white male moggies generally friendly?

We lost our 18yr old black and white Tom about a year and a half ago and we are now ready to think about getting another. We had him and a Tortoiseshell Queen together. They never got on so think we'll just get one this time. I loved our queen but she was very neurotic and scared of a lot of things.

I adored our Tom's personality as he was calm, laid back, very funny but loving. Is this a trait with black and white Toms or were we just lucky? We had him from being a kitten whereas the queen was abandoned and we got her as an adult so don't know if that made a difference.

I have never known one who wasn't.
My current all black foster is quite sweet despite his tendency to bite any part of me he can reach. It is quite funny when he tries to bite my knee, he obviously sees himself and a huge panther rather than a medium sized moggy. He doesn't bit hard, it never hurts, but he has lost one set of adopters because of it, they were not impressed by being gnawed on within five minutes of meeting him.

Not sure about black and white male cats being especially good natured and laid back,as I've never owned one of that variety,but my experience of torties is that they are nearly always good natured. I,or my DM have had several torties over the years (all rescue cats,adopted as kittens) and we have always thought how calm and good tempered they are. I think it is probably the circumstances prior to you acquiring your tortie that probably affected her personality.

My black and white male (11 today!) is one of the friendliest cats I have ever known. We got him aged 14 weeks from the rescue place and he's been a great family cat ever since.

He loves to sleep on our bed and come in chirping when he wants a cuddle. He's a lap cat and cones for a snuggle with me on the sofa most evenings.

He's just had some tuna as a birthday treat and looked at me with such love it made my heart melt!

My mum has 2 black and white boys and to be honest they're not the friendliest cats I've ever known. They're both lovely, but also likely to turn and swipe if they feel like it. They both like a lap, but again they'll launch an attack for no apparent reason.

I actually love a bit of feistiness though Grin.

We had a lovely one, and he was good-natured for the 17yrs we had with him. Much more friendly than the tortie female we also had.

Hi Turquoise, we have a black and white moggie boy. He's beautiful, we got him from the Rescue Centre nearly 13 years ago and he's so loving. If he's got a lap, he's happy.

We have a black and white moggie. He is lovely - he is a cross between a mischievous boy, and innocent! Totally friendly - every time one of us goes upstairs, he shoots up the stairs, bounds onto their bed and does the flop and roll, so we can stroke his tummy for 20 minutes, while he purrs his head off!

Yes, ours is - very friendly and very laid back. Playful at times, but not manic.

We recently got him a companion (an all-black male kitten from a rescue society) and while the kitten is very affectionate, he's also totally hyperactive, whereas ds2's best friend got his black and white brother from the same litter and he's sooooo laid back in comparison. Definitely 100% healthy, and will play, but just a much more placid and lazy character.

No guarantees, obviously, but my sample of two would seem to support your hypothesis Grin

Our lovely black and white moggie is famous on our road for being super friendly. He sits outside on the front door step in the sun and all the neighbours know him. When a visitor comes to the house he appears and hangs around begging for attention (much to the consternation of various window cleaners/plumbers/painters etc). He is the friendliest cat EVER and I will miss him so much when he goes.

As an aside, we've had several cats prior to these two now and 4 of them were female. They were never as affectionate as the males. Even the most friendly of the females was always that bit more independent and stand-offish than all of our male cats. The 3 males (2 we have now, and 1 who died a few years ago) were definitely far more keen to curl up on laps.

I've got a black and white girl who is very much like bibbity's boy. She is a local character Smile, everyone knows her. She will spend the entire Spring and Summer on the front garden wall getting cuddles and attention. I hear people passing by saying 'Aw. I love this cat. She is so friendly'! And come out so see people fussing her.

My black and white boy is a complete cuddle monster. He is a bit timid when he's outside and won't seek attention from strangers but is the cuddliest, most loving cat I have ever had. He is my boy Smile.

I did have an old tabby boy who adopted me at the age of 10 Confused. Decided he loved me most of after all those years with his owners. But I think he was a bit odd, bless him!

Mine's a wanker! He'll sit on my lap and strike for no reason. He does that lovely flop and roll though. Luffs him though.

We've got an 11 year old rescue b/w moggie and he is exactly as you describe Grin he is so loving and sweet, but also so funny too. He's just wonderful. He had a pretty terrible first ten years in life, and yet is still a very kind boy. I love him. Get one! Black cats and black/white cats tend to be less popular, although I have no idea why Smile

Have a b&w old female. She's friendly If on her terms typical cat.

A young female tabby. Pain in the arse. Follows everywhere. Scavenges
Sprays my dd with the most horrendous stink.
My male tabby. Brother of female. Is gorgeous. So vocal and funny. Not really a lap cat but I love him the most.

Omg I thought it was just mine that did the dramatic flop. He does it so dramatically it's worthy of winning awards. Not black and white though. All black. Never seen another cat do it. Even his bro don't do it. Thought I had broke the cat.

Our current girl cat is jet black all over,as was our previous one. Previous one was very loving and affectionate and a real lap cat, but was also very street-wise and not really scared of anything. Our current is much more nervous,and is not quite so affectionate,although she does have her moments when she starts drooling all over me. She is the most amusing,entertaining cat I have ever had. She plays hide and seek with me,my DD and DGD,and fetches her toy and brings it back to us when we throw it. She bounces about,doing vertical take-offs at unexpected moments. She is also the only cat that I've ever had that does this funny little head roll when she's being playful. Can't really describe it,but it's when she's standing up and got her back to us,she'll dip her head and look back at you in a manner that says 'I want to play'.

I don't think their colour determines any particular personality really, we had loads of cats growing up and they were all just so different.

Our black and white boy was what you can only describe as a thug Grin the only person he actually seemed to like was me, he used to bait and wind other cats and dogs up something rotten, he would bite people when he'd had enough of them stroking him, he used to strut up and down the street like he owned the lot he did he was like a silverback gorilla, he always looked like he was walking on his knuckles. I adored him.
Whereas the longhaired ginger tom we had a few years later, looked like a lion - he was huge - but he was the biggest wimp ever and liked to be cuddled like a baby.

Mind you we've had a few tortoiseshells and they've all lived up to the naughty tortie stereotype, our current cat is all sass.

I think it's luck of the draw to be honest!

As a vet, I can tell you my experience is completely the opposite! Most of the torties I have met are spiteful and savage!

Feel bad for calling MCat a wanker now. He's not. He just has his bitey moments. He loves a cuddle, but wasn't socialised well as a kit. So when he gets too relaxed, he suddenly feels threatened and bites.

We took out tortie to the vets for her boosters the other week and DP caught a glimpse of her health file on the computer screen - she has something similar to a red alert under her name. It said 'feisty flighty tortoiseshell - may bite'
I did wonder why they have the Dreamies ready before we even go in!

DCat is a Maine coon rather than a mog but is pretty laid back. Bit of a grump now he's getting older but will do anything for a bit of hoomin food! Grin

I've had two black and white toms and one girl, they've all been very friendly and sweet natured. My tabby Maine Coon on the other hand, much as I love him, can be a complete git!
