Are black and white male moggies generally friendly?

We lost our 18yr old black and white Tom about a year and a half ago and we are now ready to think about getting another. We had him and a Tortoiseshell Queen together. They never got on so think we'll just get one this time. I loved our queen but she was very neurotic and scared of a lot of things.

I adored our Tom's personality as he was calm, laid back, very funny but loving. Is this a trait with black and white Toms or were we just lucky? We had him from being a kitten whereas the queen was abandoned and we got her as an adult so don't know if that made a difference.

I have a white tortie and her grown-up giant thug kitten who is a B&W neutered male. I currently have scratch marks down my wrist from him. She's a softy but it's taken several years to get her to be one (she was a stray with 6 kits when CP found her...) and had trust issues to begin with.

At Vet time, Mooncat gets shoved in the box easily. The spitting furious creature which is Moonkitten last time took three of us, a towel and some kitchen padded gloves and still made me bleed. He also catches any wildlife stupid enough to come in the garden.

Moonkitten does like being on laps and has the loudest purr you ever heard. There are compensations!

I think I'm trying to say you can't generalise, all of them are different and it doesn't matter what colour their fur is. Bit like humans :)

My black and white tom, the friendliest of my three cats. Have a high maintenance grumpy ginger tom and a black and white female who likes her space.

Our black and white male is such a gentleman. My parents had one too who was also a real character. I've always said it but dh doesn't believe that certain colours of moggy can have character traits like that. Currently sitting by me licking his paws!

Had to post this arty pic of my boy. My best DF took it of him at the weekend.

My black and white boy is such a softie. We adopted him on New Year's Day and he is just such a gentle boy. Not once has he shown any signs of aggression towards us. He has formed a rather special bond with my 13yr old DSSmile

Black and white girl was anti-social and neurotic until she was about 17, then she became clingy and neurotic. Tortie girl was friendly, tabby girl was fairly average, liked you if you had good. Current black boy is the cuddliest, friendliest cat I've ever known, he's almost dog like in his devotion and ability to learn. I'm not sure colour and personality are linked.

Germgirl · 20/04/2017 19:03

My black & white idiot is the cuddliest, friendliest cat I've ever met. He wants to be with me all the time. He's sitting on my lap at the moment.
In this pic he's lying on my legs on bed, he sleeps on top of me most nights.
I do think b&w males are generally pretty friendly.

Thanks for the reassurance SherRa. I'm probably wankier than he is! Grin

Little M splayed across my lap making wuffley noises. Not a B&W, but he wanted to join in.

Vinorosso74 · 20/04/2017 19:36

I don't think you can judge a character by fur colour same as you can't judge humans by hair colour.
My B&W girl is the gentlest, sweetest cat I've known. She's friendly and loves to be with her humans.

TroysMammy · 20/04/2017 19:48

I had 2 black and white boys who were lovely and good natured. It was a pity I didn't have them long. Barnaby was killed on the road aged 3 and his brother Troy died last May from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy aged 5.

I'd love another cat someday but the pain of losing my boys at a young age has put me off black and whites.

bringonyourwreckingball · 20/04/2017 19:53

Ours is an absolute git. Very needy (stroke me, pet me, love me, now now now) then without any warning will turn on you and bite/scratch. The kids are frightened of him. He was a rescue cat but only 3 months old when we adopted him - sadly his brother died when we had had them a year or so and we had a baby and moved soon after that so that might have had an impact. I love him dearly for all his anti-social behaviour but nobody would describe him as friendly.

gunsandbanjos · 20/04/2017 20:30

I had a lovely friendly black and white boy. Currently got 2 black cats, boy and girl and both super friendly.

Trustyourself2 · 20/04/2017 21:46

I have a tuxedo. He's coming up for 20 years of age and is the most contrary cat I've ever had. Nothing to do with his old age, he's always been this way. He doesn't have time for niceties and any affection he does show is very short-lived. He's been an absolute b***d to my little girl Dcat, but 5 years down the line, she still tries to win his affections and fails. He only ever had eyes for my beautiful grey and white Dcat who was the best boy, but sadly gone now. Yet, I haven't shown him the door and I'll be devastated when he eventually goes.

I don't think the colour of a cat has any bearing on their character. I think they're very much a law unto themselves.

I loved seeing all the pictures of your beautiful cats. Thank you! Okay I can't rely on fur colour then. I just am looking for a certain type of character (like my Oliver) and it's going to be difficult to judge before we bring one home.

We chose Oliver because we visited him in his foster home with his siblings and mum and he was the naughtiest one there! He patted a child's face then ran off with his fishfinger! That was why we called him Oliver as he always wanted more food.

I'm really hoping my asthma and allergies don't play up this time though. Hoping if we try to keep the cat downstairs where there's hard flooring it will help.

Somewhere that uses fosterers such as Cats Protection will be your best bet as they'll have a good idea of the temperaments of the cats. My girly is calico and white and is very affectionate and talkative and for a toothless pint sized cat a surprisingly good hunter!! I hope you find a good replacement for your family.

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/04/2017 07:59

We have two girls, from Cats Protection, a Tortie and a B&W. Tortie is the most gentle creature imaginable, never lifts a paw in anger (apart from to her sister occasionally). She follows me around and talks to me, likes being picked up and cradled like a baby but doesn't climb onto laps (unless you are eating fish). Our B&W is much more of a lap cat but a bit of a scrapper and will sometimes lash out with no warning.

TheLongRider · 21/04/2017 08:23

Black and whites seem to come in two varieties either whip smart or thick as two short planks. Our current black and white semi-longhair is an affectionate friendly beast to humans, he'd "go a bit of the road with you" as my Dad would say. He greets people and loves a good knee. He is bossy to the neighbour's cats and is top cat with our other two.

Previous black and whites males have invariably been crafty food thieves, there are many family stories of missing smoked salmon sides and open fridges. We had one that would stare your out of your breakfast cereal and demand milk. A careful paw would come over the table edge to pinch food from your plate.

Fostering is a great way of finding out about temperament before committing to a cat. I have a soft spot for black and white boys.

My black and white stray was a softy, he wouldn't it on you but liked to be stroked. I lived on a street leading to a couple of schools, he would spend time on the front wall where passing school children could stroke him.

He was also an expert sulker. He would sit in front of you whit his back turned to you so you knew he was sulking.

He once spent ages finding the perfect spot so he could sulk at 6 people at the same time.

Patienceisvirtuous · 21/04/2017 08:31

I have two black and white girls / they're lovely...

Easy-going, cute, affectionate - really enhance our household and lives :)

In my experience as a fosterer I've found that black/black and white males tend to be soppy love sponges. Females a little less so, though of course that's a generalization.

iloveeverykindofcat · 21/04/2017 13:05

My first cat whom I lost young was one, he was a sweetie, but quite independent and lived to roam (which sadly led to his demise). He was friendly to all, loyal to none. I now have a beautiful Abyssinian cross and a black and white female mog who is the single most intelligent cat I have ever met, friendly but VERY bossy and possessive of me. She considers me her property for sure.

bigtapdancingpimp · 21/04/2017 16:10

I've had two black and white males (both now sadly deceased) and they were the loveliest, daftest, cheekiest cats ever. Very affectionate and gregarious but not needy or clingy unlike my high-maintenance girls.

Both very naughty mischievous and an amazing sense of humour. Pic one is of daft boy no.1 and pic two of daft boy no.2. I may be slightly biased but I have such a soft spot for b&w boys Grin

We have had a few positively evil ones come to my vets (I'm a VN) Shock

Don't think it really matters on colour, they all just have there own personalities.

Apart from torties - they're normally naughty! (but again, not always! Lol)

My black and white boy however is a soft arse with a mischievous streak Wink

Tigerblue · 21/04/2017 18:48

My two are certainly friendly. Lottie was the shy one who formed a bond with us immediately, she's very sweet and a real lap cat. Toby has his moments if he doesn't want attention but nothing we can't cope with - he was so friendly in his younger years, he had three lots of neighbours he visited and then he'd come home for a lap.

I've never regretted having black and white moggies, the only reason I'd go for something different next time is that the fact I grew up with white cats with black patches, so possibly would choose something different. Who am I kidding, I'll chose the first ones that come along regardless of colour as long as they are domesticated and look well.
