Just phoned the vet to have poor kitty PTS and feel like shit

Our lovely Gizzy started having problems with her legs two weeks ago, she was all wobbly and couldn't get into her basket. We took her to the vet thinking (hoping) it was just another ear infection as the last one made her lose her balance like this.

Sadly the vet said there was a lump on her spine which was putting pressure on her legs and a blood test showed some kind of infection. She gave her anti-biotics and an anti-flammatory but this didn't work, she said the lump in most likely a tumour and as Gizzy is an older cat (13) they wouldn't operate. So we started her on steroids to see if it would help but they haven't, she was been incontinent for about 10 days and today when I picked her up some maggots fell of her Sad I have been bathing her everyday as she can't clean herself or get on her tray but she's starting to get sores and I can't watch her dragging herself about anymore.

I feel so so bad and will need to tell the DC when they come in from school. She is a lovely, friendly cat who only wants cuddles.

So sorry you are going through this, putting our beloved pets to sleep is our final act of love and kindness for them.

It sounds like she is much loved and had a very happy life with you.

From your description I must say if it helps I support your decision.

2 yeas ago our dear boy had a lump they couldn't identify and 2 weeks later after a hospital trip he wasn't himself.

Constantly moving round the house trying to get comfy and we got someone to come and PTS. Even she (as she sold care in the home) thought he was okay but I KNEW.

We went through something pretty similar last week..... Vet initially thought it was heart related, put him on some meds but after a couple of weeks he went downhill and another vet looked at his X-Rays and seen what she thought was a tumour :( absolutely gutted to have him PTS, our house is so empty without him Sad

Thank you for your kind messages. DH came with me and I felt such a coward as I couldn't stay in the room but he did. He's in the garden now finding her a good place to rest. DC are between 5 and 20, the oldest has just gone back to uni so I will need to call him later. The two DDs are 9 and 14 and will be very upset.

I feel a little better now it's over, making the decision was awful, it took me 3 attempts to phone the vet but I knew it had to be me that made the decision.

Huge sympathy here too. We had to have Ancient Cat put to sleep a couple of weeks ago, and I had some much-needed handholding from the lovely people here that morning.

Poor old DS - it's hard to get that call at university. Our DS is the same age and couldn't remember a time in his life before the cat had been there.

RIP dear puss. Another one saying you made the right decision. I know first hand how hard it is but you did all you could and it was her time to go.
Please post any pics or stories on here if it helps, I would love to read about Gizzy. Cats have such a dear place in our hearts. Flowers

So sorry August I don't have cats but my Mam has two 16 year olds with renal failure. They are brothers and she's letting them go together.

PTS is the last kind act you do for your pets (doesn't make it any easier though)

Oh August, you poor love. That all must have been incredibly stressful for you to experience.

You've done the right thing. Speaking from a human's point of view, in the same condition, I would want someone to do the same for me.

Plant a lovely rose bush, or favourite hardy plant for her. I've found seeing the leaves/flowers flourish an immense comfort with lost love ones. x

Thank you for all the flowers. I wanted to bury her under my favourite tree but the roots had grown too big so she is resting near the edge of the garden, looking out to the fields across to Cross Fell in the Pennines - it is our favourite view.

After I phoned DS he sent me a quote from Winnie the Pooh

"How lucky I am to have had something that makes saying goodbye so hard"

This is Gizzy in better days.
