Ye gods, my cats gone and got herself knocked up

Confused

She's a beautiful pure breed birman. We've had her just over a year. We bought her off a family member who has bred birmans for years and she was from the last litter ever. She was the only girl and we had decided with them that we would keep her for breeding possibly one litter (family member shows cats all over the country). Hence why she hasn't been spayed.

She started calling in June and we kept her in for a week. She stopped calling and everything seemed fine, we let her back out again. Around this time I took her to the vet as she seemed off her food, vet gave me some overrid? to stop her ovulating as ideally we didn't want her having a littler until she was older.

Last week she seemed to suddenly explode, checked her nipples and yep pink and huge. She's bloody pregnant! I don't think she got pregnant in June as she would have had them by now. So no signs of calling and the overrid doesn't seem to have worked.

Except now I have no idea how far along she is! She's pretty big, very big pink nipples and I can feel the kittens moving around inside her so I don't think she's got very long to go.

Family friend is away for a month so is no help. What do I do?! Does she need to go to the vet? I've been reading up and it all seems straightforward but it's a pain not knowing when exactly she's due.

I've got her a nice box and old blankets for the birth, is there anything else I need to do?

Is it the silver tabby who doesn't have a home?

Cos it does now! With me Grin

Is he an owned cat?

Meadows76 · 24/09/2016 09:35

Stop lifting the kittens. Mum already had a moment where she wasn't as attentive as she should have been. Lifting her kittens can cause her to reject them, if she is already a bit unsure it won't take much to push her. You have no reason to lift newborn kittens

FoxesOnSocks · 24/09/2016 10:05

It'd be the black one for me if I was selecting one. Always wanted a black cat (though didn't chose my cat - he just needed a home)

HighBrows · 26/09/2016 16:49

Just checking in to see how all is going? Can we have more pictures please Smile

OP, congratulations on the beautiful kittens. They are gorgeous and it's good to know they have homes to go to.

Just seconding a pp about handling the newborns. Please stop doing that as it can cause the mother cat to reject her babies. It also creates unnecessary stress to the babies.

Leave them alone for now and you can start handling them from 2 weeks old.

Toothysweeties · 27/09/2016 14:50

Not meaning to rain on your parade. Just that there are already signs that mother cat is unhappy.

  1. Losing attentiveness towards her kittens
  2. Moving them to a different location

The breeder should have informed you of the right aftercare following birth.

The best thing you can do is to just keep a close eye on mum and babies. Only physically intervene if something is wrong.

Good luck with them. They really are very lovely. Smile

Looking forward to pics Smile

Kanga59 · 28/09/2016 22:42

gorgeous litter. Please stop touching them tho, tempting as it is!

Malodyandjim · 29/09/2016 05:55

I'm going to say I think we've laboured that point enough now.

Mummy cat is fabulous, eating like a horse! The noise from four kittens furiously feeding in the middle of the night is something quite special.

Glad all is going well with them. Some more photos over the coming days would be nice Smile

cozietoesie · 29/09/2016 22:23

You ain't heard nothing, Malody. I recall, on one occasion, accidentally waking up a pen of piglets - about 16 of them from two or three different fathers. They had been scattered around the straw but with one accord, they all woke up, shook their heads and their eyes sort of 'glazed over'. (You could see Milk Bar stamped on their expressions.)

They rushed over and first Row One and then Row Two all filled up. The noise from that was almost indescribable!

The sow just looked resigned. Grin

I think she got her own back. The next day, they all inadvertently got out into the farmyard. 16 piglets - all squealing as only piglets can - being chased by a bunch of kids and grown farmhands? The noise will stay with me till I die.

She - if I recall - just sank back into her straw with a pleased expression on her face!Grin

How have I only just found this thread?!! Shamelessly placemarking for further pics and trying really hard not to PM the OP to see if by any remote chance she's local enough to me for it to be worth me begging to be considered for the one without a home Blush Hope mum and babies continue to do well, I've been trying to resist DD's pleas for a kitten for a while now but not sure how my grumpy old boy would feel about it so trying to be sensible for his sake Sad this thread is not helping!
