My 6mth old kitten (Teddy) has been vomiting white frothy liquid since Sat night. Took him to vet yesterday (because I was concerned about the stuff DH had put on the lawn last week) she examined him and did bloods but apart from slightly raised temperature everything was normal. She gave him an injection to help the nausea and he tried to eat a tiny bit of fish last night.
He was sick again last night but nothing since the only thing is he's still not interested in food. He is drinking a little and weeing so that's good but he is sleeping a lot and looking very sorry for himself.
Is there anything I can do/get him to help his tummy and tempt him to eat. Tried steamed fish and chicken and all his favorites but no interest so far.
We (Teddy and me) would be very grateful for any ideas. Thanks Here he is a week or so ago x

Has he moaned that the rain is you fault yet? That's what Tilly does, after checking that it's raining out both the bathroom window, and the front door. Rain in one place is bad enough, but everywhere????? And when I add showering into the mix... (thus bringing the rain inside - why can't I just go outside and leave my poor girl in dry peace??)!

I know I'm lucky that Tilly is such a purr monster from that regard. She's not really cuddly though she'll curl up next to me sometimes, but tends to jump at the slightest movement from me (such as a breath). Cuddling her is not really so relaxing as it could be!

Hope he's feeling refreshed after his snooze, and enjoys his lunch. Hope you've turned off the rain by now!

The blood results are back, platelet count is fine so no problem continuing the Metacam. "Thrombisomething"- the time it takes his blood to clot was a bit off but the hematologist said it was nothing to worry about given the other things he's fighting.
It looks like the problem with his mouth is the calcivirus as his bottom gums at the front are now dark and he has the red line along his gums at the side. Also his fur smells where he's been cleaning himself and the vet says it's because there's excess bacteria in the mouth - probably because of his gum problem ( he smelt like it before when he had the calcivirus} anyway we're continuing the antibiotics for another week to help.
I mentioned about the probiotic and she said she wasn't against giving it a go after the AB's are finished.
Teddy's wasn't eating as much as before, probably because of the CV (but has been very bright & even purring, playing in the garden and still eating flies he's caught), so I was keeping a close eye on him to make sure he was hydrated. Mentioned this to the vet and she said just keep watching out for dehydration.
I wasn't off the phone 5 minutes when he decides he's going to eat a plateful of food and then went on to demand another 2 plates within a couple of hours - it's like he's trying to say I'm fibbing to the vet - little Tyke !!!

I'm glad it's more positive than negative. Smile You always knew it would likely be a long haul.

Go, Teddy! Smile

TimeIhadaNameChange · 17/06/2016 10:23

Glad to hear the good news! Ok, it's not all positive, but you're getting there!

And of course Teddy wasn't going to eat before you spoke to the vet! He was probably hoping she'd tell you to buy him something very expensive. But then he was starving, so had to make up for it. Plus he does like to keep you on your toes. He never knows when you might decide to go back to plain, boring food.

anoldiebutagoody · 17/06/2016 11:07

Time he's a little b*gger, as you know I've been cooking chicken for him to mix with the Royal Canin as he wouldn't eat it on it's own. A couple of days ago I he'd eaten all the chicken so for breakfast I opened a tin of Applaws chicken breast @ £1.59 a tin Shock (which he's loved before) would he eat it?, would he heck.
I tried him 3 times, even cooked a small piece of chicken and mixed it in - he didn't eat all day but I knew it was because he was being fussy so I persevered. In the end (at around 6pm) I had to do some more chicken which he ate with his other food no problem - he's very cute/clever, he knows I'll give in because he's not well, if he wasn't I'd put my foot down.
Needless to say the other food wasn't wasted as Bobby ate it (he thinks it's Christmas every day Grin ).

I reckon the two of them are in it together. They have you wrapped firmly around their paws!!!!!

Reminds me of my old cat. She lived to be somewhere in the region of 19-22 (not sure how old she was when we got her) and her liver was failing at the end, but she was well enough to enjoy life for a year or so, even though she lost her appetite and became very thin (but the vet was happy to not euthanise IYSWIM).

My mum would go to Waitrose of all places to buy bits and pieces to tempt her. All the staff on the deli counter knew who my mum was buying for and would often slip her tidbits for free. So for the last year or so my cat lived on prawns, ham, turkey, beef, salmon, tuna..... she ate better than my mother did (let alone me)!!!

Do you have a Waitrose nearby? If so, I'm going to take out shares!

(PS have replied to your pm)

anoldiebutagoody · 17/06/2016 20:54

Sorry no Worries and don't think M&S have a deli counter Smile .
He's been good as gold today eating what he's supposed to without complaint.
You're right about them having me wrapped doing their paws of course and they've only been here for 6 months.

Well No. You'll obviously just be buying full (large) packets of goodies from M&S. Grin

(You might be eating the hedgerows but Hey Ho.)

anoldiebutagoody · 18/06/2016 11:38

Yes you are all spot on Grin, we can't all have the nicest food- I wonder who will lose out Shock.

You of course! Grin

cozietoesie · 18/06/2016 11:51

We have to plan meals according to what Seniorboy might find tasty that day. (He likes variety but within a fairly regimented selection.)

cozietoesie · 25/06/2016 23:19

How is he getting on?

Oldraver · 26/06/2016 00:08

M + S do do deli counters (well the Banbury one)

Its amazing

cozietoesie · 26/06/2016 00:15

I stand corrected! Smile

(We don't even have a M&S near us. Grin)

Oldraver · 26/06/2016 01:00

I've never seen one before...I stood there looking at it all like I had been in hiding for 40 years...

anoldiebutagoody · 26/06/2016 11:51

Hi cozi,
Well it's been an odd sort of week, not necessarily bad just unusual.

Teddy was fine up til Tuesday night when he didn't want supper and was more interested in chasing the lone fly that was still in the house. So he didn't eat much at all - needless to say he was sick Wednesday morning , still just froth and not a lot but that put him off food for the rest of the day. He ate a little chicken at around 5 so I gave him his Metacam then he has another saucerful at supper.
Thursday and Friday he was on top form bouncing around like a kitten possessed at 6.30am and eating everything even Bobby's dried food, had supper Friday night, maybe not quite as much as usual but maybe he wasn't quite as hungry given what he ate during the day.
Yesterday morning he was sick, again just a little froth and off his food til mid afternoon, only eating chicken again and had a saucerful at supper. Still very active playing with Bobby and toys and attacking my hand when I go to stroke him cos he wants to play.
This morning I'm woken up at 7am to him having found a lost ping-pong ball and chasing it around the bedroom and on the wooden floor in the hall til he finally lost it under my bed.
He had normal breakfast at 8.30am and was actually miaowing for food, he's just polished off the remains of Bobby's dried food, probably a saucerful and has come in to say he's still hungry so has had another plate of chicken and Royal Cabin sensitive and has now gone off for a sleep because it's raining.
It seems that the reason he's sick in the morning is because his stomach's empty, vet says it is probably because of the build up of acid -if he has a decent supper he's fine.
He's finished the antibiotics for the bacteria in his mouth on Friday (which was a side effect of the calcivirus) so doesn't smell funny now, no more bleeding gums but his gums are still dark pink/red (like they're bruised) in the front, doesn't affect his eating and at least it hasn't developed into the runny nose this time. As the blood tests were OK for clotting vet is petty sure it's the calcivirus causing the redness.
I'll ring the vet next week with an update and ask about the probiotics, maybe they'll help to counteract the
He did have a bit of diarhea Friday but I think that was down to him scoffing some cheese I'd dropped on the floor before I could rescue it .
All in all he seems to be looking better, think he's put on a little weight and he's acting more like a normal kitten so I've still got everything crossed for him.

OP posts:
anoldiebutagoody · 26/06/2016 11:55

* counteract the sickness . and it's Royal Cabin not cabin 😀 sounds like he was on a very expensive cruise 😂

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 26/06/2016 12:34

I was going to ask about his weight.

I'd be inclined to try some feline probiotics - but only if your vet doesn't disagree with their use. It's just another arrow in the supportive therapy quiver and I don't imagine they would do any harm. (And there have been some interesting preliminary results if I recall.) L-lysine is also a possibility but I don't know about that in cats I fear.

I'm glad he's feeling better most of the time. Do you reckon he's a happy chap on the whole?

anoldiebutagoody · 26/06/2016 13:46

I'll definitely ask the vet about the probiotics next week. And I'll try to weigh him too - he was 2.8 kilos end of last month.
Yes he definitely seems happy 99% of the time, even more playful this week than before, he loves it out in the garden in the sunshine or sitting on the windowsill, watching the birds.
He was off his food last Sunday and noticeably very quiet -thought we might be back at vet on Monday, and it was drizzling so he couldn't/wouldn't go out, he slept most of the day but by Monday morning he was fine.
He's not a cat that likes to be fussed and cuddled (unless it's by Bobby which he loves -i'm continually being usurped by a cat!😶 ) so doesn't purr much if you stroke him , but he puts his tail up now and very infrequently will give you a purr if you get him in the right mood and stroke his head just right 😃.
I think last Sunday showed me that he usually is quite happy in his own way (maybe not quite as exuberant as most kittens of his age are but that's to be expected given his condition) this week he's even more lively.
He doesn't usually mope around he's either out in the garden chasing anything that flies, on the windowsill/ running around the house doing the same , watching the birds or sleeping .
Oh and he's just heard me in the kitchen making lunch and got up for some more food.

Weighed him today and according to my scales he's 3.4 kilos even allowing for the inaccuracy of a bathroom scales it looks like he's put on nearly half a kilo ☺ Vet of for a couple of days so will try to speak to her later in the week.
Teddy's still eating OK and enjoying the sunshine today.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 28/06/2016 09:51

Hiya,

Meant to reply to you yesterday evening but left the iPad at work - whoops!

It certainly sounds as if he's coming along very nicely. And I'd say that, from what you say, he seems very happy indeed. Poorly kittens do not run around houses and chase flies exuberantly, even occasionally.

He actually reminds me of one of my old rabbits. She's usually spend her evenings running around the house like a mad thing, up and down the stairs and round all the rooms, with an occasional rest to get her breath back, but once in a while she'd spend the whole time sat in the lounge with us, barely moving. The first time this happened my mum and I got really concerned, and actually thought about taking her to the vet for a check-up, as there was 'obviously' something wrong with her. Luckily my Godfather was there, and he pointed out that she was allowed to rest sometimes! So we let her be, and the next day she was back to tripping us up on the stairs!

Could you give him a late meal of something extra yummy (such as prawns, if he can stomach them) so that he is more likely to eat last thing at night? I'm sure Bobby would approve of this idea too!!!

Tell him I'm glad to hear he's putting on weight, and to keep up the good work of eating all his yummy food!

x

Vet phoned today as she was back in work. She is a little worried that the Metacam is starting to irritate his stomach so wanted to take his temperature , so we are just back.
His temperature is normal today 😀!! hasn't been normal for 7or 8 weeks and he was 3.36 kilos, so she was pleased
She said his glands were up slightly in his neck area but that's probably because of the calcivirus.
I mentioned about the probiotics and keefir and she was happy for him to go on probiotics but hadn't heard of keefir.
So he has some antacid pills, probiotics, we're going to give the Metacam every other day (in case it is irritating his stomach) and ......... I have to monitor his temperature (oh joy ! Wish me luck). The first day should be OK as he won't know what's coming but after that it's going to be fun.
Overall she was quite pleased with him.☺
I mentioned neutering and she said that if we can maintain his temperature for 2 weeks she's be happy to do it but she will only do it when they're relatively quiet so he is stressed as little as possible.
Usually they have them in in the morning and you pick them up mid afternoon/early evening but she's want him in in the afternoon, done straight away (by her) and back home as soon as possible. That way the immune system is effected less by the stress and it lessens the chance of the FIP virus finding a way through.
I suppose I could not have him neutered but not sure about that, all my cats have been neutered or spayed.

Hi Time
He's actually behaving more like a kitten these last few days, playing at every opportunity.
He does have supper, chicken and Royal Canin at around 11pm -it just depends on how hungry he is or what distractions (flies) there are around whether he eats it all. I think maybe I'll feed him dinner a bit earlier then he may be hungrier by bedtime.
I've told him you said he was a good boy for putting on weight, but still no purrs.x
