I've always had cats, and they've always been rescues.

We got two cats last year. The first one was 9 months old black cat and he'd been an indoor cat all his life. We let him out (after a couple of weeks) and he was one of those cats that went from house to house, getting fed around the neighbourhood Hmm. But lovely when he did come home.

Then we got a grey tabby kitten whose mum had been found in a friend's shed when she was pregnant. He's gorgeous and nearly 1 now. He hangs around our ankles, likes company.

But then, the first cat died after being run over - his territory was so large, I guess it was inevitable Sad. We live in a cul de sac, backing onto other gardens, but he was roaming streets away.

Anyway.

I REALLY want another cat and I've realised I get a lot of pleasure from the appearance of cats - I love grey cats in particular. But, there's hardly ever any grey cats in rescues.

I'd also really love a lap cat. Our black cat was so independent I didn't get my needs met Wink

Soo...

Silver bengals are gorgeous

validusername · 27/03/2016 18:20

I have a fancy £500 British blue.

She has a wonderful temperament and is very very friendly. BUT she isn't a lap cat at all and most bsh aren't.

I had two brown bengals, they were fab, but not lap cats, but reasonably affectionate. Great mousers!

expatinscotland · 27/03/2016 18:23

Do it! I want another Persian cat. We had one but we didn't buy him, we rehomed him when friends went abroad. He was LOVELY. I like an Oriental cat because they are bitchy and talkative.

feelingmiffed · 27/03/2016 18:48

Ah orange! Look at him playing so beautifully with his lego!

I wouldn't fancy touching his creation though. If looks could kill.... ShockGrin

MadameJosephine · 27/03/2016 18:54

She can be quite calm cozie and likes to curl up on my lap in the evenings which I think is quite unusual for a bsh. She is very fond of charging up and down the stairs like a herd of elephants (we live in a 3 storey house) and pouncing on your feet if you dare to move them in the middle of the night Easter Smile

OrangeNoodle · 27/03/2016 19:29

Ha ha I know miffed.

He'd waited patiently for hours while DD played with her lego and as soon as she finished he was in there. He's the same with Barbies and My Little Ponies Grin

FakeFakeRecordsRecords · 27/03/2016 20:35

you lot are not helping with your beautiful cats!

DH says no. Even though I KNOW he'd love a friendly cat.

Sensible cat loving friend says I'd be a dick for spending 450 on a cat when there's millions needing a loving home. She's harsh.

mum says I could feed an african village for a year with 450 quid (or words to that effect)

OrangeNoodle · 27/03/2016 21:17

You just need to get the rescue cats as well Grin. We did that. Two pedigrees, two rescues. A happy, if cat hair laden, household!

umiaisha · 27/03/2016 21:48

We have a 3 year old british blue (well blue cream) too. She is a beauty but has never been a lap cat until a couple of weeks back. Now she wants to sit on me every night when the kids are in bed!

Think it is a lovely sentiment to get a cat from a rescue centre but the reality is that most will not rehome cats to homes where the occupants are out at work all day or have young children. This is the main reason we ended up 'spunking £500 quid on a cat!'

umiaisha · 27/03/2016 21:50

Resting bitch face!!

I think breed rescue is the way to go. He's not going to divorce you over it. Well, probably not.

I love all these bsh, they're just scrumptious.

CauliflowerBalti · 27/03/2016 21:57

I spunked money on posh cats. I have two Cornish Rexes. The male is a lapcat. Total fuss monster. He likes to sit on my lap and knead and suck me. NOT WEIRD AT ALL. His sister is furiously independent and very mischievous. She is very affectionate on her terms, icily tolerant if you try and touch her when she's not in the mood.

I adore them both.

RomComPhooey · 27/03/2016 21:58

I've been lurking. Those Somali kittens are doing the cat equivalent of making my ovaries ache.

sweetkitty · 27/03/2016 22:08

Two Russian blue male kittens on Gumtree full pedigrees, the owner wants £1200 for them both as he's spent £300 on stuff but now has a change of circumstances! Angry

There are two others selling adult cats as they've had a baby and don't have the time for them anymore WTAF I had 3 cats and a baby cats sleep 22 hours a day, throw some food down, clean a litter tray they are not high maintenance!

Anyway I'll stop ranting I fancy a rag doll but couldn't justify £300 on a cat, trying to get DH to agree to another mph is hard enough

sweetkitty · 27/03/2016 22:08

Mog not mph

OrangeNoodle · 27/03/2016 22:09

BSHs have the best resting bitch faces Grin

Izlet · 27/03/2016 22:12

We have a blue pedigree, we got him from a rescue so didn't buy him, but spent €700 on getting his teeth removed due to untreated stomatitis, plus at least another €150 in antibiotics, antiparassitics and other medicines to treat the host of other health problems. The rescue had spent almost as much on veterinary care prior to me getting him. All this because he came from a breeder where the cats were just a commodity where the toms and queens were bred from without a break, given poor quality food, no healthcare whatsoever and housed 6 to a cage. My poor boy had never jumped until he arrived at the rescue and has bandy legs as a result.

For this reason alone I wouldn't spend money on a cat from a breeder. I know not all are like that but the market for these cats fuels the backyard breeders where they will sell you a cat for €100/€200 less than a certified breeder who does take care of the animals. Unfortunately many people will go to them thinking they're getting a bargain and the whole cycle is perpetuated.

Anyhow, my lovely blue is now in robust health and a real sweetie, but is definitely not a lap cat, although he will squash up against me on the sofa or hug my ankles while on the toilet Confused Grin. Sometimes if I'm really lucky he'll lie behind my head on the back of the sofa and eat my hair.

Quietlygoingmad67 · 27/03/2016 22:12

This is what my grey tabby rescue thinks of you spend that amount of money

It's your money so do what you want with it.

I got my bundle of floof from a colleague who was selling him on Gumtree as his wife's allergies had got very bad. So I paid for him, but not full price. I've had moggies all my life and love them all to bits, but rag dolls are something else, super affectionate, cuddly and playful. My moggy hates him though!
