I've always had cats, and they've always been rescues.

We got two cats last year. The first one was 9 months old black cat and he'd been an indoor cat all his life. We let him out (after a couple of weeks) and he was one of those cats that went from house to house, getting fed around the neighbourhood Hmm. But lovely when he did come home.

Then we got a grey tabby kitten whose mum had been found in a friend's shed when she was pregnant. He's gorgeous and nearly 1 now. He hangs around our ankles, likes company.

But then, the first cat died after being run over - his territory was so large, I guess it was inevitable Sad. We live in a cul de sac, backing onto other gardens, but he was roaming streets away.

Anyway.

I REALLY want another cat and I've realised I get a lot of pleasure from the appearance of cats - I love grey cats in particular. But, there's hardly ever any grey cats in rescues.

I'd also really love a lap cat. Our black cat was so independent I didn't get my needs met Wink

Soo...

talk me down from spunking 500 quid on a fancy cat THANK YOU.

Get a rescue cat and give £500 to the Blue Cross, Cats Protection, RSPCA, etc.

i always feel sad about the number of moggies in the one near us.

I had a beautiful grey, shiny moggy (Bambos) many years ago. He'd fan out his tail (like a peacock) when he saw somebody he liked.

I have a black and white moggy, stroppy but extremely empathic. A couple of years ago, we added a Devon Rex to our little family. We chose the breed because they're notorious for getting along with other pets, and MCat (black and white mog) is a bit neurotic. MCat hated the new addition at first, but Little Monsieur wouldn't give up, and now they're thick as thieves - grooming, snuggling together.

I suppose what I'm trying to say, if you're going for a pedigree, research their personality, rather than colour.

MCat's seems so much happier, but we did spend a LOT of time researching the right breed for a stroppy cat.

Sorry I got carried away looking at the grey cats and didn't notice the children bit Blush

RandomMess · 25/03/2016 19:37

Try the rescue cat clubs too?

TBH we have Somalis due to their nature they are very very into humans, ours have all been rescues from the somali cat club though.

Breeding queens often come up through rescue sections of cat clubs. Maine coons have been over popular of late probably a fair few needing rehomed...

stareatthetvscreen · 25/03/2016 19:58

yy ring round the breeders - great idea

they may want to rehome their older cats

magpie17 · 25/03/2016 20:14

I have a £500 cat. In fact, I have two. Neither I would describe as a lap cat but they are incredibly feisty and not very independent, they want your company all the time and they are the most demanding cats I have had in over 30 years of living with cats. That said I love them so much and their mad personalities bring me so much joy. They are beautiful to look at too (bengals).

I would have got rescues but was refused by all the rescue centres as I lived in a small flat when I got the cats, even though I moved to a bigger house with a garden shortly after. I didn't want to chance a back street breeder off gumtree so went to a very reputable and expensive breeder. If you go down that route then make sure you do your research about both the breed and the breeder, but no matter how much you spend there are no guarantees about personality when it comes to cats! Mine are crazy but I wouldn't have them any other way.

Oh ffs why did I open this thread?!!?
I NEED all those cats, THOSE TWO BEAUUUUTIFUL KITTENS, Those four old lovelies who need to be together. That lovely thing in the collar who has only one eye.
Sad

Here is my beautiful rescue cat. He is gorgeous and fluffy and I love the way he expects me to rub his tummy.

He is rather camera shy though!

Our ragdoll is very aloof. She likes to be near people but is not a lap cat in any way shape or form. Paying for a purebred doesn't mean you'll get what you want. Better to find a rescue cat who has the personality you want

Holinhurst84

Aww look at how much he loves you!

EleanorAbernathy · 25/03/2016 23:35

Our grey cat is the most miserable cat ever! She hates everybody (except me - she likes me!). She REALLY hates DP. She doesn't mind cats, it's just people. She does look lovely though.

Hollinhurst I love your cat!

OP bear in mind that you may also have to travel for a posh pedigree cat - available ones may be few and far between - we briefly considered one before ending up with another lovely mog! :)

Peaceandloveeveryone · 25/03/2016 23:47

It makes so happy to have a rescue. I got her through mumsnet, she was run over in front of a member here, starving and covered in fleas. She couldn't give her a home and posted a thread here on what to do. I am a bit soft and offered her a home. After being thoroughly vetted, she was handed to me and the other mumsnetters even paid her vet bills- a lovely lady.
This cat is so affectionate, so grateful to be in a home, she doesn't leave my side.
I am just using this thread as an excuse to post her photo.

My Ragdoll is the cuddliest cat ever. BUT I also have the most beautiful British Blue Shorthair and, although he is loving and gentle, he is in no way a lap cat and he doesn't like being picked up or cuddled. Every other owner of a BSH that I have talked to has said the same about them too so if it's a British Blue that you're thinking about be warned!

I've also had lots of moggies, all of them have been cuddle monsters. My current moggy adores my DH and purrs so loudly when sitting on his lap that we have to turn the telly up. Grin

lottielou7 · 26/03/2016 10:02

What kind of cat is it? It's always better to get a rescue cat if you can but if there is a specific reason that you want a particular breed then go for it.

FakeFakeRecordsRecords · 26/03/2016 10:15

Oh god. Who mentioned Somalis?

Ha ha, ours are rescues Grin

Di (that breeder) seems lovely, there is a lovely facebook group for Somali owners it's all friendly and no bitchiness.

I could come to Birmingham for the day to help pick one up...

I'm in north Lancashire if you want to come and visit mine!

RandomMess · 26/03/2016 10:44

Shall I confess that our boy often comes on walks with the dog, sometimes the female comes as well - I feel like the pied piper!

They are bomb proof nothing seems to phase them, not a houseful of children or visitors or anything Shock interestingly they won't befriend the neighbours (unless in our house actively feeding them) they are very very attached to us though.

RandomMess · 26/03/2016 10:47

Mine are from the breeder in Appleby (I have their pedigree papers) there first owner lived in Carnforth, we gave them a home with us in Surrey and have effectively brought them back!!!
