talk me down from spunking 500 quid on a fancy cat

I've always had cats, and they've always been rescues.

We got two cats last year. The first one was 9 months old black cat and he'd been an indoor cat all his life. We let him out (after a couple of weeks) and he was one of those cats that went from house to house, getting fed around the neighbourhood Hmm. But lovely when he did come home.

Then we got a grey tabby kitten whose mum had been found in a friend's shed when she was pregnant. He's gorgeous and nearly 1 now. He hangs around our ankles, likes company.

But then, the first cat died after being run over - his territory was so large, I guess it was inevitable Sad. We live in a cul de sac, backing onto other gardens, but he was roaming streets away.

Anyway.

I REALLY want another cat and I've realised I get a lot of pleasure from the appearance of cats - I love grey cats in particular. But, there's hardly ever any grey cats in rescues.

I'd also really love a lap cat. Our black cat was so independent I didn't get my needs met Wink

Soo...

talk me down from spunking 500 quid on a fancy cat THANK YOU.

They are JUST GORGEOUS and you're not helping my original request! Grin

Hmmm BUT they are such a little known breed who aren't in/over bred and all the breeders are working so hard to keep them as a healthy long livid breed.

Can live up to 20 like moggies so quite a good investment...

Actually Somali's are Abyssinians but have the long haired gene so worth looking on at them too!!

I've just come on to congratulate the OP on an excellent thread title (I thought you might be my RL mate, but the cats don't add up).

And then I need to congratulate the OP on an excellent NN too!

Hope you got more cats for your cash though!

EleanorAbernathy · 26/03/2016 13:11

Aaah Random they're gorgeous - it was actually Abyssinians we were looking at before getting the latest moglet, and I emailed a breeder about a lovely sorrel Somali kitten but she already had a home :)

cozietoesie · 26/03/2016 13:20

Last time I went to a breeder for a Siamese, I very nearly had to provide my blood before she would agree to me having one of hers. Several lengthy telephone interviews (they were supposed to be 'conversations' but they were the sort of 'conversations' that Great Aunt Ermintrude would have had with a prospective suitor on first acquaintance Grin) and finally having to stay with her overnight.

Handing over the dosh and escaping with him (Oneago) was almost a relief ! Smile

I spent £550 on my grey cat, he's a BSH. He would never sit on your lap and only likes being picked up when he's in the mood. But he's incredibly loving and nosey and funny.

I've decided me and puss would like a rescue to add to our household but it took four years to convince DP to get one cat and he's reacting very badly to my hints. Grin

UptownFlunk · 26/03/2016 16:47

problembottom that sounds exactly like my BSH, they are lovely cats, just not lap cats. I would definitely persuade DP to get another puss if I were you. My BSH is lovely with my other cats and definitely enjoys their company.

RubbishMantra · 26/03/2016 17:20

Theory is, the more floofy a cat, the less likely they are to be lap cats, because they get too hot. BSH have thick, dense coats. Russian blues have thinner coats.

But... My short haired Mog, who has a thick, dense coat is more of a lapster, and my semi-hairless Devon Rex is more likely to be speeding about the house making "errg-nya" noises (He's never done an actual miaow in his life). He does wake me up in the early hours to climb under the duvet though.

He was well worth the £500 we spent on him, the saying is, they're a monkey in a cat suit - with a bit of dog thrown in - Devons wag their tail when happy. Also described as "bomb proof", they seem to love everyone, and aren't phased by children.

I love how different in character they are.

This is my favourite photograph of my boys.

We one had a pedigree Norwegian Forest cat, the only time we have paid a lot. She was very temperamental and died sadly at 5. I'm never doing that again and will stick to rescue cats.

Grey and white here , though looks black in photo. Our white rescue cat came from there, he is incredibly friendly and bombproof. They were quite flexible too and DS was fairly little when we got him.

lottielou7 · 26/03/2016 18:34

Cozie - you had to stay with her overnight?!!

OTheHugeManatee · 26/03/2016 18:40

Grey rescue cat here Smile

'Circumstances', lottie.

I was given a very full itinerary though. It's a good job he was worth it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/03/2016 18:59

You could have adopted a child from abroad with less questions asked.

cozietoesie · 26/03/2016 19:15

You should fly with a cat! I don't think the airlines care too much about human passengers to be honest but cats..........?

RandomMess · 26/03/2016 20:58

Strangely enough I was going to suggest looking at Rex as they a complete nutters but perhaps not appropriate if you want a lap cat.

My girls is the longer haired one, if I win the battle to NOT have her on my lap I still get the paw of ownership on me...

problembottom · 26/03/2016 21:25

Thanks UptownFlunk, it's good to know your BSH likes company. Mine is such a sociable little cat I imagine he'd like a pal but you never know do you. The breeder did say suggest something about getting a boy cat when mine is over or under 18 months and a girl in reverse but I can't remember which way round it was!

FakeFakeRecordsRecords · 27/03/2016 11:52

So now I'm obsessing about Somali kittens.

LOOK!

that's just ridiculous

OP posts:
FakeFakeRecordsRecords · 27/03/2016 11:57

possibly a stupid question but, do they let fancy cats go to a home with a non-fancy cat? Blush

OP posts:
FedUpWithJudgementalPeople · 27/03/2016 14:55

Yes, I would think so. They will be anxious a new kitten gets company but they won't be bothered whether that company is pedigree or not!

cozietoesie · 27/03/2016 15:13

I doubt it's a matter of concern to them although some breeders might have an issue with letting their particular cats go to someone who didn't already know the breed and any issues with it. (That's a 'might' though - otherwise how would you ever get started?)

MadameJosephine · 27/03/2016 15:40

I have a fancy £500 cat (British short hair) but I didn't pay that for her, I actually rehomed her as a friend of a friend had to move to rented accommodation where cats weren't allowed. She is seriously beautiful and has a lovely temperament

cozietoesie · 27/03/2016 16:14

She's beautiful. She looks a very calm cat?

RandomMess · 27/03/2016 18:06

They are adorable!!!

You do realise that you will no longer be able to MN once you have a Somali, it is a battle over my lap between the cat and the typing all the time...

OrangeNoodle · 27/03/2016 18:11

I have never for one moment regretted spending a fortune on our two BSH silver spotties.

One sadly passed away last year but we still have this dude. He was my first baby and is totally awesome. A real character. Not a day has gone by in 11 years when he hasn't made me laugh.
