I'm guessing the good outweighs the bad in most cases but just how bad can it be?

My house is quite big and I have a spare room (box room) would it be ok to put the litter tray in there until she's allowed outside? She's 7 so fully trained etc.

It's just deathcat 1.

Lancelottie · 11/02/2016 14:06

Ours also competes to get into the bathroom, but she does such a good disapproving glare at anyone else in there that we tend to back out meekly and leave her to it.

*It must be said that cat shit is the foulest of all the pet shits.

I recently made the very grave mistake of not buying their usual brand of food (Royal Canin) but buying Wainwrights instead. They picked at it unenthusiastically and it did not agree with them. Their gastric protest was straight from the maws of Hell.

In other news, does anyone want to buy £60 worth of Wainwrights dry food and pouches?*

Did you put them straight onto the wainwrights? If so, that would explain the upset tums. You should do 80/20 old food/new mix for a few days and increase by 10/20, depending on how they respond, until they are are eating 100% new. It's a great cat food, for the money, as it has a high meat content. My cars love it, but I remember when one came to me and the previous owner didn't tell me what he was on. Omg the smell, the scoots, the barfs. Had to be starved for nearly 24hrs, before being fed small amounts.

My cat is purrfect Wink

She doesn't like the litter tray so goes out for the toilet, but is otherwise quite a house cat. (Her choice)

She never disturbs us at night. She takes herself up to the landing and waits for her bed at about 10pm then we disturb her getting up in the mornings!

She doesn't sleep on the beds or sofas.

Occasionally scratches the carpet though....

She's a good cat. We rescued her aged 6 two years ago. I think we were very lucky!

phoenix1973 · 11/02/2016 14:41

The white fur all over black clothing. I wear a lot of black.
The cost (not really a problem, but it is when I haven't had a job of more than 9 hours a week since October). No I cannot get benefits.
There isn't much else actually, she has been with us since Dec 2012 and we got her from a rescue centre. She fits in perfectly and makes my daughter happy.

MarchEliza · 11/02/2016 15:07

Mine is singularly delightful except she malts white hair everywhere.
She's never pooed outside the box but she is young still.

pictish · 11/02/2016 15:54

Down there I said the killage was the worst thing about having cats...and having to wrestle poor dead/dying rodents and birds off our little furbaby psychopaths.

I've changed my mind - the worst thing about having cats is coming home from work to make a coffee, and while standing in the kitchen realising you are standing on 'something'. That something turns out to be a pile of vomit that used to be a mouse (I presume) with all its innards and bits of its skeleton and all the other gubbins smeared across the lino and ground into the tread of your boot.

That's the worst thing so far. Cheers cat. x

thehillshaveyes · 11/02/2016 16:52

Lovely Grin the cat I'm getting is 7 years old so I don't know if she'll still be interested in hunting (naive?).

What's the best cat litter to get? Sorry for all the questions!

Ripping up sofas and chairs.
The hair all over the house.

I don't let mine in the bedrooms at night.

pictish · 11/02/2016 17:12

I use that Bio Catolet...the paper stuff. It's flushable so I can scoop the tray and flush it clean away in a trice. I always put a sprinkling of bicarb in the tray at each complete change in order to help with odour.
The cats seem to like it alright anyway.

PouletDePrintemps · 11/02/2016 17:18

Ripping up sofas and chairs. The hair all over the house.

This and I would add snagging claws on jumpers and hair all over clothes.

But they are lovely and I really do miss having them.

What colour is the cat you are getting?

cozietoesie · 11/02/2016 17:25

Seniorboy used to mouse when he was younger but I reckon that these days, if a full marching band of mice went past him, he'd simply yawn. However, he's 21. If your new girl is only 7, then it's luck of the draw really - some cats are hunters some of the time, some cats are hunters all of the time and some couldn't care less as long as you serve their food on time. Grin

You'll get to know her and her ways. Smile

maamalady · 11/02/2016 17:38

Hairballs, sick, shit, and claws damaging clothes/furniture.

To be fair, though, the sick and shit is mostly since becoming old and decrepit. We have a lot of vet's bills and ongoing untreatable health issues with our cat, but I do love her. She's sixteen and unlikely to last more than another year, I think. Sometimes I think I can almost see the tumour on her leg growing (thankfully it doesn't bother her at all yet).

We keep our litter tray in the garage - there's a cat flap through into the kitchen so it works really well. In our previous tiny house it was in the living room as there was no other option once the cats were too doddery to climb the stairs.

Lancelottie · 11/02/2016 17:42

Ancient cat is nearly 20 and still brings home the odd mouse. Possibly she looks so decrepit they walk into her by mistake.

thehillshaveyes · 11/02/2016 18:05

My cat is black. Nobody wanted her and she keeps getting overlooked. She's gorgeous though Smile

RabbitsarenotHares · 11/02/2016 20:06

My cat goes through phases of where she sleeps. This week, for the first time in many months, she's been sleeping on my bed with me which, in theory, I love. However, three times last night I woke up to find myself right on the edge of the bed with my back freezing cold, as not only was she hogging the bed but also the duvet! The last time I awoke I was thrilled to discover my back was warm and I could actually stretch out without falling on the floor. Then I remembered that, in desperation, I had turned upside down in the bed and that she had ended up hogging the pillows as well!

I do love her, but occasionally get tired of being treated as a second-class citizen in my own home!

cozietoesie · 11/02/2016 20:46

I once had a single bed. I had 6 " and the cat slept long.

I then got a double bed. I had 6 " and the cat slept diagonally.

Then a king sized bed. I had 6" and the cat slept horizontally.

I think it will probably be engraved on my tombstone. 'She had 6" every night'. Smile

thehillshaveyes · 11/02/2016 20:47

I'm not sure I'd want her to sleep on my bed because I'm such a light sleeper! Would it be cruel to close the bedroom door at night? Obviously dd's room will be closed and she'll still have the run of the spare room, living room and dining room.
