Hi all,

This subject has probably been done lots of times so apologies in advance. Got a home check tomorrow for an indoor cat who we haven't actually met yet. What should I expect to be looked at and what questions may I be asked?

So far I have answers to where the cat would eat and use litter tray, where it could have privacy in first few weeks, what vets I may sign up to, feeding schedule, what I'm going to buy etc. can anybody think of anything else?

Thank you

Can see a bit more of her bad eye here. It's cloudy at top of eyeball and stays partially shut

Aw she is very sweet! I thought of a few more name suggestions:
Dora (the Explorer)
Candy (Cat, Peppa Pig's friend)
Dottie/Lottie

MrsMoggy · 22/02/2016 14:27

Polter she was born with her eyelid shut over her eye, it had to be surgically cut back but because it had been closed so long her vision didn't develop properly in that eye so she's lost depth perception and it looks a mess but doesn't cause her pain it just tends to be weepy because she can't shut it properly. Fosterer said to wipe it regularly with cotton wool, going to do that tonight when my husband gets home as it's looking a bit wet.

timtam I like candy, that's a proper cats name

I like Dora... my new faves are Dora, Luna, Nora.

We didn't name our kittens because we liked the names they already had, but I do sometimes wonder if we should have given it a bit more thought.

RoastChickenDinner · 22/02/2016 14:30

Some more suggestions, Tabitha, Nell.

So glad this is going so well for you, xx.

RoastChickenDinner · 22/02/2016 14:31

I was quite pleased not to have to name PPG, I'd have never been able to decide.

NameChange30 · 22/02/2016 14:32

What does PPG stand for?

RoastChickenDinner · 22/02/2016 14:34

PreciousPussGirl, her Mumsnet nickname!

MrsMoggy · 22/02/2016 14:40

Nora is my frontrunner. Decision will be made when DH gets in from work!

I like Nora. And Dinah as someone else suggested, like the cat In Alice in Wonderland.

StopLaughingDrRoss · 22/02/2016 14:57

I absolutely love Candy - awesome name Grin

Nora is the chosen name!

Nora the Explorer. Grin

What's she been up to today?

MrsMoggy · 22/02/2016 18:46

She's been more chilled today and just sitting with us all. Tried to pinch food off husbands plate ha. I've made a cock up though and put some litter freshener in her tray and now she won't go in and has weed on her bed. I've tipped all that litter out and hopefully she will
Start using it again. Rookie mistake!!

I can recommend \link{http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/cat_litter/clumping_litter/cats_best_oko/14001\Cats Best} litter - it's relatively expensive upfront but it lasts for ages & it's brilliant at disguising nasty niffs.

I put 5-6L in at a time, which costs £3-4 but honestly it lasts for weeks & I've got 3 cats using it! Much less than £1 a week I reckon. The daily scoops can be flushed down the loo - wees turn into neat little balls as long as it's deep enough, dead easy to scoop, but you need to crumble them so they don't block the loo. (I use dog poo bags to put the waste in & crumble the dry stuff from iyswim.)

Once the bulk of it has turned to sawdust the remainder (after scooping) can go into compost/recycling. It has a neutral woody smell of its own & isn't dusty.

zooplus is great to buy all your cat supplies from too. They're cheap anyway, & if you buy via Quidco there's 4% cashback (atm - the amount varies), & also if you pay zooplus for a 3-year discount plan - it's about £10 - you then get 7% off every order.

They run a loyalty programme with points for every purchase & you can trade those in for various bits of food or treats or toys. Delivery is free as long as you spend £29 at a time, & they use DPD who send you a text with a one-hour slot when they're delivering & you then have the option to change the date/leave with neighbour etc.

Well done for choosing a name! Love it Smile

Another vote for Cats Best litter. We tried a lot of different types before settling on that one!

Vinorosso74 · 22/02/2016 20:51

What a lovely cat!
I third Cats Best litter. I bought a bag while I was getting food in the vets as we desperately needed more it is so easy to clean the tray out. Definitely is more cost effective than most of the others.

MrsMoggy · 22/02/2016 22:51

I will keep an eye out for that. Just caught her trying to wee on bed again. Argh all over a bit of freshener she was using the hooded tray brilliant beforehand. Kicking myself!

More advice needed folks please! How often do you think I should flea and worm her as an indoor cat? Also how much approx is the annual booster/check appt? Thank you

OP posts:
Mincepies76 · 23/02/2016 17:34

Wilbur is an indoor cat, I flea and worm him as I would an outdoor cat. As you might remember I do The Healthy Pet Club and pay £10 a month which covers everything. I think boosters are about £40 but can't quite remember!

MrsMoggy · 23/02/2016 18:58

Ah yes I looked into the healthy pet club but none of the practices in my town do it unfortunately. The vets4pets does a similar scheme but I'm not sure I need to de flea and worm as regularly as id be paying for

OP posts:
Mincepies76 · 23/02/2016 19:16

I'm told that flea and worm eggs can come in on us humans on shoes etc and whilst the risk is lower it's still there. W likes to nibble shoe laces and have a good sniff of shoes...prevention is better than cure...

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 23/02/2016 19:19

When our elderly LandingCat became an indoor moggie (his choice) we stopped worming him and we never had a problem. He did have flea collars but from what I can gather they're a waste of time so effectively he was never defleaed and we never got those either! We must have been very lucky. The vet always recommended it but then why wouldn't they? Our current vet says we should get away with deflecting every three months in winter and worm monthly, and we will be doing this with BiteyCat as he goes outside.
