Cat's obsession with tidiness is getting on my tits!

He insists on "covering up" any left over food and drink. I am sitting here at the table, with the laptop, drinking wine. Every time I put my glass down, he rushes over and "scrapes" all round it, "covering it up" as he would do a turd. I just went into the kitchen to get the bottle, and he has managed to balance an envelope on top of it and has knocked the empty bowl of peanut crumbs onto the floor and is busily scraping round it. We cannot put his food on a mat, because he used to pull the mat out from underneath and balance it on top, knocking over his water and food in the process.

Does anyone else's cat do this, and any idea why he does it??

OCD cat Grin. None of mine have done this, it does sound bizarre. My cats are obviously slatterns Grin

MrsSchadenfreude · 07/10/2015 20:22

He is now sitting behind me on the sofa and washing my hair. Lovingly. But if I move my head, I get a sharp rap from a huge paw.

And he knocked my wine over. Angry

That sounds more amusing for us than you.... I wonder if a Feliway plug-in would help him?

wankerchief · 07/10/2015 20:25

See knocking the wine is too far.
Time to turn him into a tea cosy

MargaretCabbage · 07/10/2015 20:26

He sounds lovely, but that must be a nightmare.

I have one very clean cat who regularly patrols the litter trays to make sure the other cats have been tidy and pulls the clean towels from the towel rail and puts them in the litter box. Confused

Sympathies OP!

MrsSchadenfreude · 07/10/2015 20:28

Grin at tea cosy.

We did have a Feliway plug in. The Shitten used to shit right next to it. A neat coil underneath, with a small smear on the skirting.

Seriously though, has anyone else had a cat that has done this? He always has, and he has taught the Shitten to do the same. (Although she doesn't wash me.)

I think he'd do well on Youtube.

Alfieisnoisy · 07/10/2015 20:47

He needs to come and have a word with my Ragdoll cat who spends ages scraping round the litter tray when he has evacuated...he scraped the tray, the floor, the walls and covers nothing. I suspect he is a bit thick but having another cat show him would be good.

And yeah, knocking some over is fighting talk Grin

timtam23 · 07/10/2015 21:09

Mine does the same - he will eat some of his food and then solemnly "bury" the rest, scraping all around it with his paws. He also drags his water bowl into the middle of the floor before having a drink. We have to keep the water level very low to avoid spillages!

MrsSchadenfreude · 07/10/2015 21:25

Timtam - yes! Yes! The water dragging! Is yours a Maine Coon/with Maine Coon ancestry.

OP posts:
timtam23 · 07/10/2015 22:21

No he is a bog standard DSH moggy..But we found him as a tiny stray kitten, no sign of his mum anywhere so who knows what habits he had picked up. The food scraping thing is supposedly either a relic of burying food in the wild, or a way of scenting the area through the glands on their paws. However I have never been able to find any explanation for the water dragging! I had 2 other cats for many years and they never had any weird habits with food or water!

cozietoesie · 07/10/2015 22:32

Wouldn't work at cozietowers - they have to put with my untidiness! Grin

But I'm still laughing here.

Ailurophile · 07/10/2015 22:38

Yes I have a Maine coon cross, he is obsessive about the litter..spends at least 15 minutes post poo covering it up and spraying litter everywhere. Eats his food then spends a while picking bits out to fling around the kitchen. Water is weird, he will cover himself in it after drinking, spray it all over the floor and sometimes spill the whole lot for no good reason.

cozietoesie · 07/10/2015 22:48

Seniorboy uses his tray and then comes immediately to me and yells at me to clean it. (I'm generally around during the day.) No prolonged covering up for him. (And I'm well trained.)

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 07/10/2015 22:51

Alfie unfortunately cats don't seem to learn by example we have one OCD cat who will cover everything, finding the wierdest things from the craft stash to adorn food which has been put down for more than 20 seconds. Then we have his twin who is sadly a little thick like yours and will scratch all around the litter tray but not achieve anything. It's like that old Arnie and DeVito film Twins. They are litually opposites in almost everything - colour, fur length, size, food preference, being inside or outside, which family members they prefer. They are both asleep. He is curled up in a neat little ball on a chair, she is spread out head and leg dangling precariously off the side of the toy box.

Sometimes you can almost hear the sigh as tidy twin comes to the litter tray to find that his sister has beaten him to it and he has to bury hers before he can contemplate his next move.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 07/10/2015 22:55

My cat is the opposite. Bloody hours she spends scraping away in her litter box, sometimes scraping even on any door that's near it. Only to leave her turd still sat there uncovered. Not one fleck of litter on it. Why why does she scrape so much?

MoriartyIsMyAngel · 08/10/2015 01:18

Our dear old cat, may she rest in peace, would not use her litter tray if it had even one pee in it. I'd regularly come down in the morning to find a pile of random items on the floor covering up the cat shit underneath. Once she had laid two unballed socks across it, the managed to balance an empty Dove soap box on top. She must have been so careful in her work that I didn't have the heart to be annoyed!

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 08/10/2015 01:29

Loving the hair wash with sharp rap.

You need tommy tipee wine cup. Problem solved.

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/10/2015 07:50

Yes, yes, Moriarty! I approach random clothing, such as child's pants, with trepidation, as there is often a furball or poo (not his) lurking underneath. We always knew when the Shitten had misbehaved as he would tell her off in no uncertain terms, jabbing at the offending poo with his paw as he spoke (but not touching it).

This thread has made me laugh a lot! You should be filming these mad cats and putting on youtube Grin my cats don't have any of these weird habits Sad

SilverBirchWithout · 08/10/2015 12:12

We have a very slovenly Burmilla, who believes he is 'too posh to wash' and has a number of pretty disgusting habits.

He much prefers to use his litter tray when I am in the room. Poo is always left uncovered and he stands around near the tray waiting for me to empty it and clean up after him.

Obviously he believes in leaving 'the staff' to sort this stuff out.

He also refuses to eat his food out of the dish, pulls it off and eats of the floor!

TheBunnyOfDoom · 08/10/2015 16:41

Mine is like this in his litter tray. Although, the other day, he went in the tray, didn't cover it up, then jumped in the bath (next to said tray) and scraped in there for about ten minutes! Weirdo.

Although his favourite place to go is sitting IN the tray but shitting next to it. Angry

CMOTDibbler · 08/10/2015 16:48

My beloved, but utterly insane damagedblackandwhitegirl is obsessed about covering her food up and will go and fetch things to cover it up if she can't find anything handy on the kitchen floor. And then still scrape the bowl round the floor for a bit.
I don't know why she bothers as evilgingercat will flick the covering off as soon as he feels like eating the remains of her meal. But then she thinks she can leave a mouse in the middle of the floor and come back to it later Hmm

NeededANameChangeAnyway · 08/10/2015 16:49

Aren't cats disgusting weird! (I have two)

One we have the chase round the house to wipe her arse as she frequently has shit stuck to it. Her brother is pretty clean and fastidious but.....One of the keeps standing in the shit in the tray and then walking it over the floor (boak)

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/10/2015 17:24

Mine likes to come in the shower with me and chase the drops of water. The Shitten jumped in the bath with me once. That didn't end well for either of us.
