Advocate but it's prescription, is this your cat?

FrChewieLouie · 02/03/2015 20:25

We've used Advantage since the infamous Frontline Fail of 2013. No flea problems since.

AnyFucker · 02/03/2015 20:36

no, not our cat

{long story}

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 02/03/2015 20:38

I think advantage is non prescription. Have you seen a flea?

AnyFucker · 02/03/2015 20:43

not yet, but the cat will start coming in our house again when the warmer weather comes and patio doors are open

it gave us a major infestation last year Sad

Umm well I use Stronghold but that's a prescription from the vet. But are you randomly flea treating a stray?

ThisFenceIsComfy · 02/03/2015 20:48

You could spray Acclaim round your house. Then any fleas that come in off the stray will die when they hop onto floor. Costs about £15 for a can and did my whole 2bed house no problems

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/03/2015 20:50

Iirc it's not a stray its an owned cat who luffs AF.

AnyFucker · 02/03/2015 20:52

we did the spray about 5 times and were still getting bitten

only just got rid of the infestation really

it is either treat the cat or keep all my doors and windows closed all through the summer (and I love the cat)

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 02/03/2015 20:53

it has no chip and never discovered who it's real owner is...although must be local as the cat is otherwise fed and healthy

We buy stronghold at the reception of our vet, just need an idea of the cat's weight.

There's also a pill that's amazing but I think you'd have to kidnap the cat for a trip to the vet to get it!

ThisFenceIsComfy · 02/03/2015 20:57

Do you know who it belongs to AF?

ThisFenceIsComfy · 02/03/2015 20:58

Sorry I didn't read your post properly!

ThisFenceIsComfy · 02/03/2015 21:00

The only problem about flea treating a cat that isn't yours is that if the owners are putting stuff on and it isn't working (maybe the fleas are immune) or they don't feel the bites as much so haven't noticed, then you could double dose the cat. I'm not sure that would be good for the cat

cozietoesie · 02/03/2015 21:00

If you're certain that it has fleas, it might also be a good idea to think about worming - they're sometimes quite dangerous and an outside cat, who possibly hunts, would have much more likelihood of getting worms.

My only real concern would be treating an animal where you didn't know if they'd just been treated by a forgetful owner who suddenly took a tumble to their responsibilities. (Chemical overload where treatments came too close together.) Does the cat wear a collar of any sort where you could put a note?

(I'm not even going near vaccinations and neutering.)

AnyFucker · 02/03/2015 21:01

we asked around last year but unless I knock on every door in the (built up) area we are stuck

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 02/03/2015 21:02

if I knew I would give 'em a bloody telling off

the cat is a gorgeous long haired tabby thing....but riddled

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 02/03/2015 21:02

no collar

OP posts:
ThisFenceIsComfy · 02/03/2015 21:02

Could you buy a collar, tape a note to it saying "Your cat has fleas, it comes in my house, I will be putting xyz on your cat in two weeks unless you flea treat it yourself"

Yes that sounds a bit crazy and would probably make you look like a weirdo too Smile

AnyFucker · 02/03/2015 21:04

I know, fence. I don't want to hurt the cat in an way. But it got used to coming in and out of our patio doors. Obviously we can keep it out in the winter. The kids still keep begging for it to come in !
