Just got back from work and found her on the small county road 50 feet from my house. Absolutely devastated. She was the most beautiful, friendly little thing. Just need some support from people who understand.

So sorry about your gorgeous Millie, what a lovely girl she was. Hugs Flowers

ChickyEgg · 11/04/2014 21:17

Oh bless you. She looks beautiful in the photos. Flowers for you, Op.

Mignonette · 11/04/2014 21:44

How are you doing today Jon?

I like the idea of you being able to sit in the sun 'near' her. That sounds very comforting.

She was gorgeous. I love Torties- my friend has one, the fey, dainty little cat that she is.

CatThiefKeith · 11/04/2014 23:29

So sorry op, I lost one a little while ago and still have a big 'Fluff' shaped hole in my heart.

I hope your happy memories bring you some comfort. Thanks

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 12/04/2014 14:49

Thanks for the comments, and thanks for asking, Mignonette. I'm ok thanks. The actual "pain" I initially felt is gone but I'm really noticing her absence now. Nobody follows me into the toilet, or sits on my armrest or pummels my boob while purring and dribbling! Sad
I am definitely going to get another kitten, but perhaps leave it until the beginning of the summer hols so I can be there to integrate her in with Scabbers.
Interesting to hear other people love torties too - full of character!

Hi Jon

Yes, I still miss having my cat standing sentinel in various places around the house. I felt really lost for the first few days- all the habits i had trained into me by the cat; not leaving doors open for example, really stood out without my cat to 'complete' them.

I hope you are getting cuddles with Scabbers. Has your other cat reacted in any way?

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 12/04/2014 20:30

God I know what you mean! I can even walk down the stairs without being tripped up.
Scabbers misses her - I woke up in the night to hear him calling round the house with his little "where are you" chirrup. That really got to me. Had a little cry earlier as well. I just miss her little face and the fact she loved absolutely everyone. I remember once having two knobbish guests having a "heated discussion" at a dinner party of mine - Millie just sat there between them looking up at them like it was the most fascinating thing ever!
Scabbers is a lovely little boy and sleeps on my bed every night, but he's not one for cuddles. I also had to pick a HUGELY engorged tick off him earlier, which was utterly foul.

OP posts:
Mignonette · 12/04/2014 20:34

I have never had to deal with a tick . Sounds foul.

Poor old Scabbers. That does sound so heartbreaking Sad.

I hope that in time the memories of her bring smiles rather than tears but it takes time- they get right into your heart don't they?

How can anything so small have such an enormous personality? My cat was more 'real' than a lot of the humans I have met. He was such a big presence.

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 12/04/2014 20:42

They really do, and I have to say it's nice to talk about it with people who understand. I know that for some people they're "just" animals but, as you say, they become so real.
Do you any other cats now, Mignonette?

Mignonette · 12/04/2014 20:53

No I don't. We went to meet a potential adoptee and the moment we met him, both DH and I baulked- it was just too soon and it stirred up a lot of grief for us (we have both lost our Fathers around the same time as Cat died although I wasn't close to my my Father and I mourn my cat more Shock). I hope that doesn't make me sound heartless but my Cat gave me more closeness and regard in a year than my Father did in a lifetime.

I felt really upset that the new cat wasn't my cat.

I found it hard to not be able to endlessly talk about my cat. Our close friends are cat mad so that helped but I still feel a bit of a fool for mooning around missing my cat. I keep it to myself or talk to DH as he missed Cat terribly.

We decided not to risk losing another one. Not yet. When we move to somewhere more isolated we will get a couple more.

ThistledownAndCobweb · 12/04/2014 22:53

Millie sounds like she was an absolute superstar.

They really do leave a hole in your lives, as you mentioned further upthread they train you into their routines and when they are give their absence is startling.

I hope you and Scabbers are alright tonight. It's so sad when the look for a pet who won't be coming back.

Mignonette, I'm sure when the time is right you'll find the right cat.

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 13/04/2014 11:20

Thanks Thistledown
Scabbers seems largely ok - he didn't get up in the night last night and has been super affectionate this morning. To be honest, he just trots off every day, naps somewhere oily (by the smell of him!) and comes back when he's hungry. Which is fine by me...but I do miss how Millie used to pop in and out every half hour or so, sometimes bearing "gifts!"
Mignonette, what a difficult experience that must have been, going to see potential new cat. And how lucky you realised it wasn't the right time, rather than ending up with a Cat you might slightly resent, or make unfair comparisons with old cat.
Isolated is good, but I'm very rural, in a tiny little hamlet and it doesn't guarantee their safety. They drive like utter twats along this tiny lane!

cozietoesie · 13/04/2014 11:43

Do you have any cars parked nearby? They often like to sit under cars - Gawd knows why.

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 13/04/2014 12:16

Ugh, yes there are, but Scabs is a bit more wary and wouldn't perch under a car. Millie did though. The other week, I had to pop home from work for something, nipped into the house and back in the car, got half way back to school, looked in the mirror and saw Millie in the bloody back seat!! She really did have no fear of anything!

Jon they do like getting oiled up don't they? Mine smelled like he'd put in a day shift at Kwik Fit Smile.

When Cat died i spoke to local shelters and a vet, trying to figure out what happened to him and they told me that country cats are more likely to be run over because they don't get so street wise and wary of roads. I was kind of surprised and not surprised of you know what I mean? Apparently the more isolated the road, the more likely it is that a cat will die on it Sad.

Cats that pop in and out......I imagine you must really be missing that. Sad but maybe the Scabbers- super affection at the moment is a 'sign' that he understands you are fragile and in need of cat solace.

MysticMugBug · 13/04/2014 12:29

Poor bugger. It looks like you gave her alot of love in her short life. Beautiful markings she has, little sweetie.
I'd be devastated as you are, be kind to yourself, she knew you cared.
Our cat loving next door neighbour when we were kids used to explain about the 'salmon and cream our passed on pussycats were having. I don't doubt her Smile

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 13/04/2014 12:48

salmon and cream God mine would be in seventh heaven over such a treat!
Best crack on with a bit of gardening (even though wind is about 400mph) but it's really nice reading other peoples experiences too. I've put on this picture because even though it makes me sad, it's the only one of them being affectionate together.

Lovely picture.

We're very rural and one of our cats was killed on the road five years ago, then last year my neighbours beautiful cat was as well.

One of my lovely cheeky girls pops in and out and follows us around the garden.
Luckily apart from one, my cats tend to go into the fields bordering the garden rather than on the road.
I hate seeing them on the road.

Mignonette · 13/04/2014 15:12

Gorgeous photo Jon
