Is there ANYTHING more I can do for the best cat in the world before I PTS

Sad

He has cancer, had a tumour in his foot removed 3 weeks ago - all healed well

It's also (minorly) in his lung, a smallish tumour - not causing any obvious symptoms like panting.

He's on steroids for inflammation and a painkiller.

He stopped eating properly on Saturday, just a few bites since then, just enough to keep going - offered every type of food possible - he would only eat a bite or two while being stroked :(

No bowel movement since Saturday but peeing fine, still drinking water

Went to vet yesterday and they prescribed a appetite stimulant - Internet says very effective

Nothing, not interested.

Started syringe feeding him last night - the AD food mixed with a little water. Gag reflex ok, swallowing fine.

He's not impressed though and he's not getting that much.

He's purring and happy when I'm not forcing it down his neck.

I've got an appointment at the vets in an hour.

Can anyone think of anything I could be doing or asking for?

I think he's trying to leave though I'm not sure why as there shouldn't be any pain and the cancer that we know about isn't giving him obvious symptoms.

He could easily have another tumour elsewhere though as his eye is bothering him and leaking a lot.

Also really surprised the appetite stimulant didn't work.

He may be shutting down - only your heart and mind can really guide you now.

Thinking of you.

SunshineSuperNova · 11/12/2013 11:47

I'm so sorry Laurie. No advice but thinking of you x

TheBunsOfPanettone · 11/12/2013 12:47

Sorry to hear your gorgeous boy isn't doing well Laurie. I don't have any helpful advice I'm afraid. Facing the imminent loss of a beloved cat is so hard. Thinking of you.

Lonecatwithkitten · 11/12/2013 13:41

Laurie am sorry you have got to this point. You really have tried everything.
What you can do for the best cat in the world is to hold his paw and speak gently to him as the injection is given.
It is the ultimate kindness we can do for our pets and we make the decision, because they are our best friend and we do not wish to see them suffer.

Lonecatwithkitten · 11/12/2013 13:41

Sorry I see I have missed your appointment cherish your memoriesThanks.

LaurieFairyCake · 11/12/2013 13:42

The vets given him a double steroid and double painkiller

He's now lying on the floor totally zonked out on the drugs

His gums are all yellow meaning his liver is in trouble - probably due to not eating enough though the cancer could have spread there

I have to get a tin of AD into him by syringe - he doesn't like it. :(

If he's sick this afternoon and not keeping the food down I'm going back as the vet said there was nothing more to be done

So it might be time this evening

Thank you all so much for your thoughts, this is the hardest moment ever as he means so much to me.

Sorry to hear this, Laurie.

To be honest this reminds me of my last cat - he was diagnosed with bowel cancer at 17 and within a week he'd more or less lost the will to live. He was fine the week before that, but suddenly he wouldn't go out or eat.

I was glad I had him put down when I did, he deteriorated so quickly. You won't regret doing the right thing for your cat now, I promise - watching them suffer is awful.

cozietoesie · 11/12/2013 15:10

So sorry, Laurie. We'll be here for you if you need us.

SunshineSuperNova · 11/12/2013 19:15

I agree with what Cailleach says about not regretting the decision. I had my darling boy PTS in October and it was awful, but I know I did the right thing. Flowers

timtam23 · 11/12/2013 20:40

Laurie I'm so sorry
I had to have my beloved 18 year old cat put to sleep in September, it was so hard to go through with it even though she had obviously reached the end (not eating, very unsteady on her feet, and withdrawing from us not wanting to be handled)
Thoughts are with you Thanks

TamzinGrey · 11/12/2013 21:00

Really feeling for you Laurie.

gobbin · 11/12/2013 21:49

He's gone Sad

He recovered after syringe feeding him last night enough to get up in the middle of the night to purr at me for food

He just pushed his face into it though without eating it

Then he threw up twice today after feeding and that was it, it was too sad for him to be constantly force fed and then throw up

So we took him tonight to be pts.

We're having him cremated and I've ordered a plaque for the tree with his name on.

My heart hurts Sad

He obviously had a special place in your heart and home.

TamzinGrey · 12/12/2013 21:55

Oh Laurie - you poor thing. I feel so sad for you. Please comfort yourself with the knowledge that you gave BestCat a great life and a loving end.

Cuddleswithcats · 12/12/2013 21:58

You did everything you could for your boy. He was clearly very much loved. I'm so sorry for your loss.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/12/2013 22:00

Thank you

Tonight will be the first night I will have slept without him in nearly 17 years

Through 2 husbands and 8 house moves he has been there. I have 2 scars on my arms from his kitten years to remember him and videos of him purring while lying on my chest.
