Some fucking shit ran over my cat!

My neighbour called me and said someone was speeding down our road ( which drives me mad as we have a school and nursery near us and it is 20 mph, but that's another thread....) and our cat ran across the road and they hit it. Get this they slowed then fucking drove off, did not even get out to see if he was okay.

So I had to take all three of my children home to see if he was dead bloody traumatic for them ( he was not dead) he is now at the vets with god knows what wrong with him, when I picked Him up and put him in my car he collapsed.

So to the Aibu can I watch out for the car as i have the reg and a good description and stick hundreds of post it notes thanking them for not getting out of the car the bastards? Angry

My cat's twin died a few months back and we only knew about it because someone took him to a vets and they scanned him and contacted us.

It is not about blame but compassion for someone's pet.

PS. A vet can check for microchips and inform owners.

Healing thoughts for poor cat.

Exactly Wolfiefan, it is the not knowing if you hit a cat at least take it to the bloody vets so they can scan it.

KellyElly I guess I'd fall into heartless out of those three. I really see no difference between a cat or any other small animal. It's unfortunate and not something I'd do deliberately but I'd not lose any sleep over it. And yes I have had a pet hit by a car, my dog was injured but fortunately survived. I didn't feel any anger to the driver though, my dog shouldn't have been in the bloody road!

Oh I knew there was something else I wanted to say! OP, re speed bumps, the louder you are the more likely it is that you will get them. Write to your local councillor. Write to your MP/MSP. Write to the Chief Exec of your council, and the Head of Transport as well. Keep writing until they give in. Petition them on their FB/Twitter if they have accounts. I work for a local authority and it is a sad fact that we give in to shut people up. People higher up the tree are particularly bad for giving in to the loudest shouters.

If you have a school nearby, you may have a fairly decent case anyway. Our Transport section has an initiative called Safer Routes To Schools and have put speed bumps into many of the approaches to schools, and have reduced the speed limit to 20 as well, with the slogan 20's Plenty.

Good luck!

Yes if they stopped and got help. But scumbags just drove on. How could you?

Re speed bumps we have a nursery and school off our street so maybe I can shout extra loud.

If you can't be bothered to stop for a pet you have hit then what does that say about you?

Op, there's a 3 legged cat near us. He/she gets about ok. I've always imagined that its a RTA that caused the amputation.

Poor cat. They are survivors though, can you visit him later?

Children seem to be positive although we have been honest and said if he has a brain injury he might go to Heaven. I don't want him PTS but I have to think of his quality of life too.

Yes, I think you will need some guidance from the Vet as to the way forward.

We have campaigned for years to get speed humps, although unfortunately we haven't had any success. We have a school, a nursery and a church on the road. The council put sped detection equipment, and the highest recorded speed was 76 mph!

The council drew up plans, but when it went for consultation, there were a number of long standing residents who put in multiple objections per household (7 houses, out of a road with about 150 houses). There were also loads of random objections from people who perhaps drove along the road once a week, and didn't want uneven wear on their tyres Hmm. The proposal was turned down because of 'overwhelming community objection' which is bollocks, but there you go. Lots of people we know said they thought the traffic calming was a good idea, but when it came to it, they didn't bother writing in support of the proposal.

So my advice to you would be to canvass as much support as possible from other residents, and get every adult in every house to write in support of it. When I asked for copies of all the responses, there were lots of spurious objections like lives would be lost if ambulances had to slow down for speed bumps, people not wanting damage to their tyres or suspension, people finding going over speed bumps uncomfortable on their backs, and people worrying that it would cause cracking in their houses.

PS we have Burmese cats, and they are such good natured cats - I hope he pulls through.

Thanks beryl, ironically the street we live on is where the entrances are and yet the surrounding streets have speed bumps but not ours. Does not make sense really.

Zepherial, so sorry to hear this terrible news.

Words fail me over someone looking back, seeing they've injured a cat and then driving off!

Hope your cat fully recovers. If the worse does come to the worse and you have to be strong and the vet advises he is PTS, then yes, that is a responsibility we all have to be prepared to face as pet owners. Here's hoping that it won't come to that and being sent home could be a good sign. Wishing your cat a complete recovery. Furry feline vibes from our 2 cats too.

I think the thing is even if you are "heartless" where animals are concerned, and can't see the importance of stopping to see if an animal is okay, injured or suffering horribly (in which case surely you would try to help in any way possible?) a cat usually belongs to someone else who cares for it, loves it. A real person with feelings - another adult, a child. Even if you don't see the importance yourself, how can you carry on knowing that your actions (or lack thereof) are going to cause distress to another person?
