Some fucking shit ran over my cat!

My neighbour called me and said someone was speeding down our road ( which drives me mad as we have a school and nursery near us and it is 20 mph, but that's another thread....) and our cat ran across the road and they hit it. Get this they slowed then fucking drove off, did not even get out to see if he was okay.

So I had to take all three of my children home to see if he was dead bloody traumatic for them ( he was not dead) he is now at the vets with god knows what wrong with him, when I picked Him up and put him in my car he collapsed.

So to the Aibu can I watch out for the car as i have the reg and a good description and stick hundreds of post it notes thanking them for not getting out of the car the bastards? Angry

I think it's every cat owners dread. We live in a quiet cul de sac but some people speed up and down and there's no need for it.

Any news? I hope he is ok. I genuinely have no idea how anyone could to stop! Makes me so Angry
My cat came to me after he was hit by a car he was a stray and had crawled into my garden with broken legs and goodness knows what. I raced him to the vet and he recovered- now he rules my house! Vets can work miracles even on seemingly awful injuries so I have everything crossed for your cat x

I need some wine lunch will update when the vet calls.

Plus I have to stalk the nursery collectors cars, or would that be mean?

Zeph, fingers crossed, it's common, I have heard a few cats end up like this, they do make a recovery, it's usually their claws are also damaged as well they put they out to try and stop themselves bless em. I used to work for Cats Protection ans they don't let anyone have a cat near or on a main road, I now have a housecat.

I would love speedbumps but they won't put them on our lane (no money in budget and you have to have a really strong case now) they wouldn't put them there because of cats, only children. So my cat remains indoors...

We had chicanes put in a nearby street, Sparkling. Meant to be as a traffic calming measure. Instead, all the local hot rod boys saw it as a personal challenge/car slalom course and the road became even more unsafe - particularly at night.

Oh dear I meant to cross wine, although some how bold seems apt.

I wonder if the fact that the nursery and school entrances are on are road will have any impact?

I did not mean speed bumps for the cats, they would howl at that one, nutty cat lady.

Zeph - so sorry about your cat, just to add, my sis's cat had a double spiral fracture & awful infection in one leg after beng hit - eight weeks cage rest, a frankly eyewatering bill and four years later, he's completely mobile happy and healthy, with the damaged leg just a little bit stiffer and skinnier than his others.
I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that your cat has a similar happy outcome, it's definitely possible - vets seem to work miracles.

Unfortunately it's not the law to stop if you hit a cat as they are 'free-roamers' but I think it should be. I'm a cat lover and would be mortified and really upset if I hit one. It terrifies me that one day that could happen. I'm still trying to get over the anger about the bastard who shot and killed one of my cats. So much rage and no justice! Angry

Hope your cat is okay Zepherial Flowers and Wine

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat, I hope everything will be OK.

Our dog was run over as a puppy, he slipped his leash and came home two hours later covered in blood and limping, he had broken his hip and vet said his injuries were consistent with being hit by a car. He recovered and lived to be 17 so it is amazing how animals can recover. I will never to this day understand how the person who ran him over didn't stop.

Please contact the school and local council about speed bumps, I live in a road leading into school too and I think anyone who speeds outside a school is a complete idiot, and idiots only stop if they are made to.

Wylye thanks, lots of positive stories so will keep my fingers crossed.

On a lighter note my cats name, named by my daughter is Mr Mieaw.

Tress embarrassing in the vets " Mr Meaw please"

Use the nursery and school entrances as your main point, yes, and if possible cite examples of speeding. They'll likely want to know, from the police, say, of any accidents and maybe send an observer before committing to any traffic calming measures, those being so expensive.

Sadly, it's never going to stop people who might be driving at 'safe' speeds being uncaring about animals they run over and wound badly. Some people are just rotters.

I hope he is okay OP. One of mine was ran over and he needed something put in his hip, he was fine but he had to be kept to a small are so he didn't walk on it a lot, do you have dog or cat crate at home, somewhere safe and peaceful he can lie when he comes home?

No-one stopped after they hit mine either.

Sorry to hear about your cat, hope he's ok. maybe approach the school and see if they can put something in the school newsletter regarding being careful in the area- next time it could be a small child?. Something a bit PA but non identifying? Worth a try

Some stupid morons pot-shotting innocent pets for a laugh probably. Really sickens me. The driver that slowed down but didn't stop for your cat has just as much gall imo. Really horrible that people can get away with that sort of stuff. I knew someone (a former friend's dad) who openly admitted to hating cats and said if he saw them in the street he would run them over! I don't mind people who don't like cats, but to say that to a cat owner is pretty twisted!

On a lighter note, I love your cat's name. I think David Baddiel has a cat called Chairman Meow!

Fingers crossed for your cat xx

When I was young a man ran over our cat and he got out of the car and picked it up. Poor cat had died so he ended up helping my mum bury him and he came round for a few days later just to see if we were all ok and apologise.

I will never forget his kindness and I will never understand people who don't stop when they know they have hit something.

Report
Sallystyle · 01/05/2013 14:55

I should have added that he knew it was our cat because we were there when he got run over.

Report
AKAK81 · 01/05/2013 15:42

How do you know the driver was speeding? I would never deliberately run anything over but would never stop unless it was a dog or other reportable animal. It's the risk you take owning a cat I'm afraid, if you don't like the risk then it should be house cats only for you. At least it wasn't a dog though otherwise you'd be liable for any damage to the car.
