Bloody Jelly like substance in Dcat1's wee

He has been in and out of the litter tray all day, so I kept an eye on him. He did steal some cheese off a plate, so I thought he had the runs. I picked him up for a cuddle and found a lump of bloody jelly stuck to his willy area fur. He is neutered. I also found a lump of this bloody jelly in his litter box. I can take him into the vet in the morning, but am worried it cant wait. He is my little shadow, Im so worried about him.

I'm sorry your cat's ill . It sounds like a UTI to me - my cat used to get them all the time, she would be in and out of the litter box constantly and passing bloody urine. The good news is that it's easy to treat, if it is that.

He is still eating and playing, so Im trying to tell myself he will be alright waiting until the morning. Ive just wiped a little more from his fur. I love that big softy so much, he had better be ok.

He is really sick, he had an obstruction. Im knackered. I also think we are going to lose him. I fed him wet food and a good dry one, access to fountains and regular check ups. I feel like Ive let him down.

No you haven't. You took him to the OOH vet? Nothing more you can do, I think.

What did the vet say and how is he right now?

PS - Is it possible for you to stay home with him today or this morning? If a cat is very unwell, having their person around often makes a big difference. It gives them extra heart.

Yes, he has seen the OHO vet. I home ed, so am home all day today, I wont go out at all. He is basically incontinent, when he never pees outside the box, he even peed on the sofa. He is still peeing lumps of jelly and blood. Ive been syringing water into his mouth. Im taking him to regular vet today and discuss options, get blood panel done. He has painkillers and is comfortable as possible, but looks so so ill. He is still passing wee, which is a good sign, but has gone from being a healthy young cat to a really poorly baby.

Im so tired, I havent slept.

Oh hun, you haven't let him down, this is very very common in male cats as thier wee tube is so small. One of my boys had this last month and he was already on special food as he was prone to UTI's. His last UTI was Christmas 2008 and the blockage came from nowhere, the vet thinks it may have been brought on by stress as I found a local Tom in our kitchen twice in the week before he became ill.

He was very poorly and spent 3 days at the vets with a catheter, he came home with alot of meds, think there was about 7 in all inc Diazapam and Cystophan to reduce stress, another to keep his bladder relaxed, an antibiotic, another to keep his wee acidic to help prevent another blockage etc, he was on these for 2 weeks and now has to stay on the Cystophan for life (we will be buying this from Amazon instead of the vets).

There is a risk that is can happen again within the three weeks afterwards but if they get through this time it's alot less likely to happen again. My boy has been fine since thankfully, we've been adding warm water to all of his meals, wet and the odd bit of dry he's been having to keep alot of fluids going through him.

These things come on very quickly and you did the best thing for him by getting him to the vet as quickly as you did.

If you can settle the DCs safely or get someone in to keep an eye on them (neighbour, perhaps), go for a snooze with him then at some point, with a towel beneath him but cuddling him. It will help both of you.

Otherwise, just lots of contact and talking to him so that he knows his Mum is there. And give him something to lie/sleep on (above a towel to catch any pee) that smells of you. An unwashed jumper or other piece of clothing.

Let us know how he gets on.

Ive got him next to me on a towel.He is still head bumping me and giving me the odd lick, which is heartening. We are in at the vet in a few hours. Thank heavens for insurance. It didnt cover OHO, but thats fine.

Just in case Im keeping him isolated from my other two.

I really thought I was doing the best for him with the mixed diet and fountains, I feel really guilty. No more dry food. Ive been watering down beef in gravy cat food, and he has taken a few bits from my hand.

No matter what he has been there for me, is so unconditionally loving and devoted. He really is a sweet little chap.

You have absolutely no reason to feel guilty, CatKitson - although you clearly are. Just keep on doing your best by him and see what your regular vet can do.

Illnesses do happen to animals however much we may love them. It's usually nothing to do with owner.

Thank you Cozie. I really appreciate it. I know he is "only a cat" but I love him every so much.

Reading about dry food it seems like it really is unhealthy for them, and as long as I kept seeing wet spots in the litter I didnt really think about it. He doesnt go out, which is another risk factor apparently.

I will let you know how he gets on at the regular vet. Thanks for caring about dcat.

There are some dry foods which are ok for them as part of a mixed diet, Burns is one and my boy was fine on it for years, stupidly I changed his food 6 months before his blockage, it was another dry food recommended for cats prone to UTI's but obviously wasn't as good as the Burns.

It probably wasn't the dry food anyway with him having a mixed diet Cat, boys are just prone to UTI's anyway because thier waterworks are so small, just him licking himself could get a few germs until his tube and bring one on, usually they get crystals blocking them when it's caused by the food. My boy was crystal and UTI free when his happened, it was the muscles or something clamping shut which caused it as all his tests were clear.

Your boy is weeing which is really good, mine couldn't wee at all, totally blocked which is why he needed the catheter and unfortunately he wasn't insured so that was a nice £1k vet bill before Christmas. But he's worth every penny, I've had him longer than three of my kids, he'll be 10 next April

I give all mine Royal canin hair and skin dry, and instinctive wet, with the occasional pouch of felix or sheba.

Im going to try and wean them all onto just a wet diet. When I last tried that they lost too much weight, they just dont eat enough wet. I suppose I can buy urinary care food. Ill have a look for Burns.

I have to go and take him in a little while. He isnt looking too bad, esp after that huge wee on me/the sofa.

Ours has wet food and I never see him drink anything, even out of puddles.

Our water fountain was £30, it's just a low rent water feature in this house.

Surely if they are hungry they will eat though? we know someone who only feeds 2 pouches a day between two cats and leaves biscuits down all day. Their cats just dont seem to eat much.

Im back. He is safely left at the vet, catheterised and on an IV. We will know more when the bloods are back, but looks like flutd. Poor baby, I had no idea cats hid pain so well. I thought he was looking much better than last night.

Bear is not at all well, his kidneys are not working properly, and he has had an obstruction removed surgically. Ive got family coming with me on Saturday to talk more to the vet, he isnt well enough to come home right now. Im trying not to cry too much but its so upsetting. My poor little Bear.
