Black cats being sent to rescues due to superstition

Anyone seen this?

It's awful. I always want ed a black cat (though am very happy with my tabs)

It's ridiculous. I have 2 black and whites. Would love another, but not a good thing at the moment. Black cats are very intelligent and affectionate, in my experience. Far more so than either of the tabbies we have had or my mum's tortie.

PetiteRaleuse · 18/10/2011 12:24

It's worrying that people who are so stupid are allowed a vote tbh.

How ridiculous. We had a beautiful black cat, and would certainly have another.

We always thought he brought us luck

Northernlurker · 18/10/2011 12:28

We have a black and white - she is a little smasher. What depresses me is the number of people who rehome cats because they are having a baby. Our cats protection place always at least one beauty rehomed for that reason.

winnybella · 18/10/2011 12:31

Idiots. We have two huge black cats (and had as many as 6 black cats at one time) and they are lovely although one is a bit of a psychopat

giyadas · 18/10/2011 12:31

That's awful, can't believe people can be so stupid.
I had a black cat, very intelligent and friendly, would love another one but am overrun with ducks at the moment.
He did get very jealous when dd was born, but he got over it and they ended up great friends.

winnybella · 18/10/2011 12:31

psychopath

PetiteRaleuse · 18/10/2011 12:45

Here in France black cats are considered lucky.

There is a lot of rehoming / abandonment due to pregnancy though Hmm

Lost count of the number of people here who asked me what Iwas going to do with my pets when I fell pregnant.

I have also heard this. My boss took a black cat from The Cats Protection as he had been there for so long and he is a beautiful boy.

He was rehomed because of a new baby. Y

Years ago my old neighbours literally just shut the door on their black cat when the baby arrived. She was living in a little hollow in a wall and I fed her for months until I found a new home for her. I so wanted to keep her but my two cats were not happy about it Sad

GossipWitch · 18/10/2011 12:51

I have a black and a tortie, the black is so affectionate that he dribbles when stroked, the tortie will only let you stroke her if she wants it then she'll nip and get down when she's had enough. this is so cruel if anything i think black cats are lucky, mine certainly is after being ragged about by a staffie and the staffie coming off worse!

GossipWitch · 18/10/2011 12:57

Also I got my black when ds2 was 8 weeks old and one night I caught him in ds2's cot massaging his feet when he had a cold, he's always been protective of ds2, bless him.

EsmeWeatherwax · 18/10/2011 13:01

That has got to be one of the stupidest things I have ever read. Black/black and white cats have always ime, got better personalities, and are way more affectionate and less high strung than any other type. Would never have any other kind of cat tbh.

Although having said that my current incumbent black and white boy is the mot evil looking animal I have ever seen. (he's on my profile) Biggest softie that ever lived as well!

PetiteRaleuse · 18/10/2011 13:10

He does look evil Esme Grin

Shock and Sad at your story RedRubyBlue

That is just awful! I've got 4 cats, one is black and he's a sweetie, huge and greedy, but lovely, lol. All the cats have been good with the babies/children and they are staying until they pass away. I love my kitties, they are part of the family.

KatharineClifton · 18/10/2011 13:32

The article is rubbish, I expect one person said this at the rescue and they are using and exaggerating for publicity. And I don't blame them for that tbh. It's always been harder to rehome black cats/dogs from rescue centres because many people just prefer lighter animals.

WaitingForMe · 18/10/2011 13:39

How strange and sad. My kittens are the only survivors of a little cat my old boss found and adopted only to discover she was pregnant. DP and I wanted a couple of kittens so it seemed natural that we had them. It never occurred to me to ask what colour they were.

yesbutnobut · 18/10/2011 22:16

From what I've heard rescues find it harder to re-home black dogs as well, so maybe it's more to do with the colour being less appealing for some reason. I had a black cat as a child called Lucky, and when my DM was filling in her Pools entry she would get Lucky to walk across it (never worked btw!)

catsareevil · 18/10/2011 22:21

The hairs from black cats can show more on carpets and on soft furnishings, maybe that influences people.

If people think black cats are unlucky why do they choose them in the first place?

Bloodredrubyblue · 18/10/2011 22:24

Well if so called superstition can work against them then surely it can work for them. There is a rhyme that I half remember;

'The lass that keepeth the dark black cat
A deep, true love she will not lack'

Runs off.....................

girlywhirly · 19/10/2011 08:57

I love black cats, obviously that makes me a witch! You'd think we were still in the Dark Ages, the amount of ignorance there is.

It never crossed my mind to rehome the two I had when DS was born.

Ilovefluffysheep · 21/10/2011 21:55

I have heard that as well. I foster cats and kittens for the RSPCA, currently have black mum and 4 black kittens that I've had about 3 weeks, and no interest at all so far. Shame as they're lovely.

lubeybooby · 21/10/2011 21:59

Awwww that's so sad and stupid! I have a beautiful black puss and I dread ever being without her. She's a lovely affectionate bonkers bundle of fluff

GetOrfMo1Land · 21/10/2011 22:00

Silly buggers. I have two black cats, they are wonderful. They are huge and dribble when they give you a cuddle, I love them dearly.

I also have a tortoiseshell, she is very naughty.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 25/10/2011 09:37

Not sure that you can generalise about the behaviour and affection levels of different coloured cats. Taht would be like saying blonde children are daftest.
FWIW, we've got a ginger and a grey, we could (and would) have rehomed a black and a black and white, but they weren't ready to leave mad cat womans care.
