Anyone seen this?

It's awful. I always want ed a black cat (though am very happy with my tabs)

I finally have a black cat and she is the most beautiful thing I own. I'd take 'em all in if I could Sad

NotQuiteCockney · 25/10/2011 09:46

I've heard the same from rescues. I prefer black cats as my hair is pretty dark, so it isn't obviously cat hair on me, iyswim.

Our current two are from a rescue, and are both black with a bit of white trim. The two before were both all black. (well, one had a tiny white bib, but not much at all).

stinkyfluffycat · 25/10/2011 09:51

I've got two lovely cats, but am still envious of my neighbours' beautiful beautiful black one. She sits in the window looking at me, blinking and 'smiling', as if she knows how very beautiful she is...

DrinkYourWeakLemonDrinkNow · 25/10/2011 09:54

Sad That is awful! ShockHow can people be so utterly cruel and idiotic?Angry

Black cats are just as beautiful as any other colourConfused and I always think of them as lucky. A black cat crossing your path is said to be lucky.

Ormirian · 25/10/2011 09:56

Anyway I always fancied being a witch.

DrinkYourWeakLemonDrinkNow · 25/10/2011 10:02

LolGrin Me too. I think my affection for cats would have meant me first in line for a witch trial if I'd been about a few hundred years ago.

They are such lovely creatures though (apart from my two's fascination with catching toads urrgh!)

TethHearseEnd · 25/10/2011 10:07

In the UK, black cats are considered lucky- in the US they are unlucky; the article is a US one, no?

MrsDreadfullyMorbidMausoleum · 25/10/2011 10:07

I had a very beautiful black cat called Bob. She'd obviously been a pet that had been abused (almost no tail, missing toes etc) that ended up as a feral on my gran's farm.

I spent many happy hours talking to her, until one day she followed me from the barn into the house and basically only went out when she was needed to catch mice although she much preferred rabbits and whiskas.

Poor Bob died in the spring.Sad She'd lived at the farm for at least 14 years.

When I get back to the UK ? I'm going to get another black cat.

MrsChemist · 25/10/2011 10:13

The most adorable cat I've ever met was black. He was at a rescue and he was HUGE. They let him out for a wander because they could trust him. I would have taken him in a heartbeat, but he was diabetic and I wouldn't have been able to afford the meds or the special food. Sad I hope he found a good home, he deserved it.

edam · 25/10/2011 15:53

I thought black cats were lucky? Mine is - assuming the definition of luck is an endless supply of dead mice..

DontCallMeBaby · 25/10/2011 16:19

My friend has a little black cat who is the absolute spit of the one pictured in that article - poor little mite was neglected as a kitten, and is undersized as a result. Has a lovely life now and is cute as a button.

I really don't get it when people specifically go looking for cats of particular colours - breeds I understand, like dog breeds they have different characteristics, but not colours. I think silver tabbies are particularly beautiful, but when we went looking for a pair of kittens, we just wanted kittens that would be happy to live with us, not a particular colour. We got two black and white boys, whose hair shows on EVERYTHING, dark or pale, but I wouldn't be without them for the world!

simpson · 25/10/2011 23:17

The picture is the spit of my black cat Cleo Sad

And while she is not the most friendly (unlike her tortie sister) she definately has her own personality and is very vocal etc especially when hungry. I would not be without her despite her trying to get at my dinner tonight Hmm

She adores my DS (6) and sleeps on his bed at night, how she gets up there I will never know (v high bunk bed)

PurpleOne · 11/11/2011 00:57

Have only ever had black cats and we have a lovely female now aged 3 1/2.

The most friendliest and affectionate cat I ever did have. She is my best friend and partner in crime. We love her so much.
Funny though, she always lays on clean white shirts and the fur is black...but when she lays on my leggings or tops, the fur is grey! She has weird colour changing fur!
She cries at the door every time I go out. She sleeps on my bed at night. Simpson, I used to have a high bunk -- she can climb ladders, and so did her kittens!

And yes, I'm a witch too, but she refuses to come into circle with me...she hates candles but she loves attacking the brush on my broomstick!! :)

TimrousBeastie · 11/11/2011 10:23

I thought black cats were lucky aswell...
I have a lovely 18week old kitten who I think is black- sometimes she looks very dark brown. When we first got her you could see stripes in her fur but they aren't there anymore.

wouldn't change her for the world but the thought of people abandoning black cats is making me want to go out and get another :)

ThingsThatGoFlumpInTheNight · 12/11/2011 11:19

This thread caught my eye as I visited a rescue centre with a friend yesterday and the place was inundated with black cats & kittens - they probably made up a good 70% of the cats there. Which seemed to say to me at the time that it's more to do with people being fussy about cat colour than genuinely being unable to care for them Sad

JustCallMeMrsTeabag · 13/11/2011 13:07

I run a cat rescue in Australia and unfortunately black cats/kittens are always the slowest to rehome. There is always a far higher number of black kittens left in the Pounds because people just don't adopt them.

I can guarantee you that if I rescue a litter of black kittens, they will be the slowest ones to be adopted. I'm not sure that it's anything to do with superstition over here - in my experience, I have found people tend to want 'pretty' cats, and solid black cats/kittens are just not as appealing.

Birdsgottafly · 13/11/2011 13:29

It took my ages to find a black kitten for my DD.

She is much more practical than my tortie because the hairs don't show up on work clothes or school uniforms.

4c4good · 13/11/2011 18:38

I don't think colour influences temperament, but I have heard that black cats and dogs are hardest to home. I have two black cats, a black dog, and a grey and white dog.

My cats are both very intelligent, very full on personalities. Vocal , affectionate, naughty and larger than life - but I don't think this is related to their colour - I chose them from rescue because I adore black cats and also wanted cats with outgoing, affectionate personalities.

JenniferYellowHatsRedLingerie · 13/11/2011 18:47

Ilovefluffysheep where are you? We'd be interested in a black kitten. We're in Yorkshire, we've already got an elderly tabby (and a baby!)

Utter idiocy in my opinion. Black cats are lucky, non? And the baby doesn't care if we've got pets or not! :)
