She just took ages to get half up to then settle down and didn't seem to know what to do with her front right paw. Then after a minute she got down off the sofa and went out of the room.

She is 16. Her kidneys are failing, she has arthritis and has hypoestesias. She is on 4 tablets a day and special food. I am taking her for an extra check up this evening as she wasn't very well at all last week and had lost weight. She looks like she might have lost more Sad.

The vet said we are not at that point yet but part of me worries we are but he doesn't want to say as he knows how potty I am about her. She did play a bit yesterday though and is eating the new food we had to buy her after refusing to eat anything else.

Thank you. I am relieved I can take her to the vet tonight instead of tomorrow morning with the kids.

She is laid really close to the ground without touching it with her head and her tail is at a funny as in strange angle. Will the vet think I am mad if I tell him this? Last time I showed him a photo I had taken of her when she was laid weirdly on the sofa.

I'm so sorry. She does sound as though she is coming to that point, doesn't she...poor old thing Sad

It sounds as though she has had a very loving and happy life with you. Do you feel it would be kinder to let her go on as she is or to put her to sleep?

It can be the hardest decision I know. Thinking of you x

TheOriginalFAB · 19/04/2011 15:11

Oh bugger. Really? The vet said we weren't there last week.

OP posts:
IngridBergman · 19/04/2011 15:33

No I'm sure only you will know when it becomes that time iykwim

It sounds like she might be approaching it, not necessarily there yet. It is v hard to know with an elderly animal.

GrinGrin

The vet just rang. FabCat is doing really well going by her results and I don't have to take her back for a few weeks. Yay!!!!

Oh brill news, thanks for letting us know - I hope she has a good while with you yet x

TheOriginalFAB · 20/04/2011 17:37

Me too. Just about forgiven her for scratching me.

She has not eaten her last 3 meals properly Sad. Just tiny amounts. I have given her normal food for tea and she has only half a tray of food Sad. All her tests are fine and she is doing really well but won't eat. I think I will have to put her back on the appetite encourager tablet. She even gave up jumping up on the chair Sad. She is asleep next to me but even seems to be laying down strangely now. Maybe I am just hyper sensitive to everything she does now.

Here we are again. Barely eaten her breakfast and has walked away from her tea. The vet said to feed her normal food for a day or two if she won't eat the renal food but then I think she is just holding out for that and as she has to have the renal food at least 90% of the time it isn't great to be giving her normal food.

OP posts:
TheOriginalFAB · 29/04/2011 09:55

She ate less than half her breakfast yesterday, no tea, had a bit of loose bowels and hasn't asked for food yet. I have just given her her medication and have given her the biscuits she normally has at bedtime just to get some food in her.

The vet saw her last week and was really pleased with her, he said her results were good and were not at the point of having to think of having her pts. Now I don't know what to do SadSad.

"Look into her eyes, if you see a cat that is unhappy and ill - let her go. If you see happiness, don't."

Excellent advice. That was how we knew when our cats sister was dying last year. We could see she was suffering, and she had been only drinking milk (as a treat as she was terminal anyways) for weeks.
I'm very sorry.

Hi, thank you for your messages.

DH surprised me with 2 nights away in a hotel but we came home during our break to check on her. She has eaten okayish but has drunk lots of water. The vet said she can drink as much as she wants. She really really does not like it when I have to give her her medication. She has to have 4 tablets in the morning and she will only eat one out of my hand, luckily that is the biggest one. She spits out the others so many times, she looks cross when I am doing it but she needs the tablets Sad.

She had a small amount of tummy upset last week but none since thank fully.

I have just seen on the calendar she is due at the vet a week on Saturday but I will be ringing for advice sooner I expect.

She still goes out to lie in the sun and asks for strokes so I am hopeful she is still happy.

She is my cat and come above DH in the pecking order so I will take her if the time comes. She was really miaowing for her tea at 3.15 so I gave in at 3,17, (I know how to assert my being in chargeness) and she hasn't even eaten half of it. Sad

No point mixing it with anything as she still knows and won't eat it. She also can't have milk. She has free reign of a big garden along with a fluffy bed and places to hide to needs me. She is mostly behaving herself though seems very fed up with the daily drugs run. I notice every little thing she does though so it is hard to know if she is being different or I am being more vigilant with watching her.

Not much more than 2 mouthfuls eaten by FabCat this morning so feels pointless to give her the same food for tea. I am doing fish for the kids teas so will give her some of that as a tempter.

I don't think I need to take her just yet as the vet has told us what to do when she won't eat. Basically feed her normal food for a couple of days to get her eating and then go back on to the renal food. For tea I have cooked some fish and I will give her that when she wakes up. She usually eats the biscuits she has at 9 before bedtime. I am going to the surgery on Thursday to get more food and have left a message saying she won't eat this food now and what else have they got. We have had plan A (powder in normal food) and plan B (appetite encourager) so we will see what plan C is.

Oh goodness!. Yes yes to insurance. I could never claim and then when she was 10 she had an MRI. Cost was £2500 Shock.

A neighbour said my cat had diabetes as she is drinking a lot but it is because she has kidney failure, I think the vet would have picked up by now if she had diabetes.
