I've noticed whenever hiking comes up as a general chat subject, loads of people jump in to say how much they love it. I thought there might be a general thread somewhere on this as I'd love to chat with people who walk regularly but couldn't find one.

Would anyone like to join me? I live down on the South Coast so am lucky that there are some gorgeous places for me to walk - the New Forest, South Downs and further up the coast in both directions. I normally manage a couple of decent walks a week, depending on DC's care pattern, as well as trying to get out for the occasional hour or so on other days. I mainly walk alone but do have a friend who joins me on occasion.

I'm quite a novice as only really started walking in February of this year and the furthest I've walked is just over 20k, but I'm finding it so liberating - I feel like a different woman after a walk, my mind is free and my body feels tired but satisfied, if that makes sense?

Would just be nice to have a friendly chat with like-minded bods. And perhaps share some photos - helps the weather is beautiful at the moment but I'm struck every time I'm out, just how beautiful our country is - even when I'm wandering in the inner city. Here's a couple of pictures from my Friday walk - a stunning church in a village in the middle of nowhere and some great graffiti on the side of a motorway underpass 😃

Great picture !

A very Autumnal hike yesterday.
It’s surprised me how quickly everything is turning as it was super green just 2 weeks ago

Oooo, Caspianberg - looks gorgeous and so autumnal. You're lucky to have such scenery on your doorstep - looks like a picture postcard!

@SanFranBear - a few more weeks and it will all be covered in snow

rifling · 29/10/2022 13:31

Where is that, @Caspianberg ?

Caspianberg · 29/10/2022 13:34

@rifling - Austria. On a clear day you see the Italian dolomites in the distance

Swissnotswiss · 29/10/2022 13:53

@Caspianberg Lovely! waves from the other side of the Dolomites

12km trot around some woods today - with a detour to an old "castle" ( mound) because some of the woods are still impassable following Arwen last year

I do love the scrunch of the leaves 🍁

I’ve had a good catch up on this thread and enjoyed looking at the great photos posted. We did a lovely one yesterday-our original plans had to change because of weather forecasts but we were thrilled with this one-the Aurumn colours were amazing.

Loving the photos. We had a just over 7 mile hilly walk yesterday. My photos didn't turn out great as cloudy but got a couple of lonely trees. We're in Reeth for the night.

I love that tree, CuriousMama - so much character and shaping from the environment, gorgeous!

And your walk looks truly beautiful, Subbaxeo - such lovely hilly scenery. Are those pics taken from your camera phone? Mine just wouldn't do the view justice but yours are just lovely!

I did get out on Wednesday but, as it was dark before I even set out and was a pretty drizzly, horrid evening, not much to show for it.. I did try to get a nice 'atmospheric lone tree by the river' shot but (talking of my camera) came out pretty poorly 😆 Think I shall leave the photos for a while!

Yes I love interesting trees. The other photos weren't great so deleted them. It's good we're getting out though isn't it?

Absolutely!! I'm not out on the hills but I'm out, which is the main thing and when I do head out in daylight, its even more special.. not sure when I'll be doing that again though as life keeps getting in the way!

Quite a short walk today but my lovely DS asked to join me so I had company at least - great as it was a bit damp and drizzly but not sure I needed to know quite so much about lego mini-figures or Star Wars lore 😉

That's lovely he enjoys walking. My adults dcs and dgss do too.

Great thread. SanFranBear I always found it so good that my DS wanted to chat on a walk.

I love walking, sometimes can get a longer hike in but more generally local walks. This weekend I’m visiting family but walked at Stonehenge, and at Alice Holt woods.

Oooh, Wildernesstips - we were there over the summer and it was rammed! Looks wonderfully peaceful in your pic. I saw there were quite a lot of walking routes in that area and could be tempted!

The thread has completely stalled but I'm not in the least surprised... it is dark and wet and revolting out there at the moment in my neck of the woods. No motivation from me at all as life is stupidly busy too (moving house) but would love to hear about others adventures, if you're having them!

Yip it's that time of year

I got out at the weekend
Very foggy at home but drove the short distance and went up hill and it was glorious , blue skies, low sun giving golden bracken - the line of the river valley was a ribbon of mist all day though , impossible to make out on my photo

midgetastic · 15/11/2022 07:43

Hope the house move goes ok

Wildernesstips · 15/11/2022 17:53

So difficult to get walks in at this time of year. Did a very short walk at Bournemouth beach at the weekend, but I have a day off on Friday so hoping to walk somewhere more exciting.

Undergroundovergroundwomblingfree · 15/11/2022 21:21

Did a very, very wet 4 miles before work in the Surrey Hills today where I found the saying, "there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes" was very true. I have a new long, waterproof coat and, whilst it kept my too half dry, it seemed to funnel all the rain water to run down my legs from my knees. I didn't dry out until lunchtime.
Still, the autumn colours were beautiful and the wombling spaniel was happy so all in all there are worse ways to start the day.

Lovemusic33 · 15/11/2022 22:06

I walked 5 miles yesterday, the weather was lovely in the morning so made the most of it.

I think I need to get some new walking boots, I seem to get through a pair every 6 months 😬. Can anyone recommend a good pair of boots?

midgetastic · 16/11/2022 07:38

Only if you have lots of cash upfront - couple hundred I would think

I use altberg from their Richmond base. I have really odd shapes feet and they have such a range of sizes and shapes ( they sell a lot to the milatry )

they can resole twice so you get long term good value for money
