Labrador-proof bin for the kitchen, does it exist?

We’ve been putting our rubbish into a small work top bin then decanting into the big bin which we keep in another room. Is there a bin which which would stop our Hoover Lab getting into it? We put our food waste into the food bin but occasionally bits get put into the main bin.

I don't if there is such a bin but I would clean your existing bin with bleach and keep an air freshers thing in the bottom and make sure your rubbish is clean - wash it. And don't put bits of food into the main bin. I realise it might not be easy - I live alone so it is - but just a suggestion.

My father trained the dog not to go into the bin by placing large numbers of tins on top of the bin that would then fall and frighten her. It took a few days, but she got the message!

Cherrysherbet · 09/09/2026 11:47

We have a similar problem with our dog. She not a lab and only small, but we can’t keep our bin on the floor, as she tips it over and goes through the rubbish! We have to keep it on a little table. I would also love to find a doggie proof bin.

afaloren · 09/09/2026 11:47

We have to keep our bin in the utility room for this reason, and the door shut. Appreciate we are lucky to have that space.

What about, though, a bin where you have to press the top to open it? I think Brabantia make them. Or is your Lab too clever for that?

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 09/09/2026 11:48

We lock our bin in a cupboard.

Popdropper · 09/09/2026 11:49

My kitchen bin has a little catch that locks, can't remember where I had it from but if you google locking kitchen bins you should find something similar. No idea if it would be Labrador proof (as I sadly don't have a Labrador!) but might work, maybe?!!

PrancingPanda · 09/09/2026 11:50

Our bin is in a cupboard but Lab still gets his head in it if he's quick enough!

KarcherK5 · 09/09/2026 12:02

Our lab can’t work the bin with the push top, he snuffles around at it but can’t push his snout down hard enough to make it work (he can work the one with the lever you push with your foot).

StarCourt · 09/09/2026 12:02

I have a locking kitchen bin from Simplehuman, you need to buy the specific bin liners too but it’s the best bin I’ve ever had.

don't put air fresheners in the bin if there's a risk the dog will eat them!!

I meant a stick on thing at the bottom of the bin underneath the black plastic bag. I know labs are beyond greedy but surely they wouldn't be able to or want to eat that?! I might be wrong and you definitely wouldn't want them eating that so fair enough.

On another note, does anyone know why labs are so greedy? Do they have the equiviaent of prader willi syndrome?

PleaseDontTreadOnTheDaisies · 09/09/2026 12:10

Our old Lab (may he RIP) used to barge the kitchen bin until it fell over, and the entire lid came off. There is no mess you've ever seen as bad as a Labrador with a knocked over bin.
Our only solution was to leave the Labrador and the bin in different rooms.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/09/2026 12:47

I wouldn't put anything past a labrdaor @redboxer321 ! and how is an air freshener going to stop them getting in the bin?
It's something to do with hormones I think, I remember it being on that dog behaviour programme. Something like 50% of labs have this condition that means their brains never tell them when they're full so they're constantly looking for food I think I have a similar condition

I was thinking about making it not attractive to the dog but it seems I have underestimated labs!

VanGoSunflowers · 09/09/2026 12:58

I have this one. it’s lockable. My lab has never bin surfed in his defence, I got this as a prevention thing. I figured if he never realised how exciting the inside of the bin is he wouldn’t go looking in there when my back is turned 😂

FuzzyBumbleeBee · 09/09/2026 12:59

Is it possible to put a stair gate across the access to the kitchen? That would remove his access to the bin.
We use one of the mesh type pull across ones.
Not got labs though I did have one years ago but I do have a greedy little son and so who will take anything he can out of the bin edible or not if he thinks I'm not looking

noctilucentcloud · 09/09/2026 15:23

The only thing that worked for my very hungry lab cross was a stock-feed bin with a metal clip on either side of the bin lid (got from a garden centre). That stopped the quick raids where he'd flip the bin lid and make a grab for whatever was nearest. If he was alone and persistent he could still break in to the stock food bin by brute force - so if he was home alone he was shut out the kitchen.

Genetic mutation in a quarter of all Labradors hard-wires them for obesity

New research finds around a quarter of Labrador retriever dogs face a double-whammy of feeling hungry all the time and burning fewer calories due to a genetic mutation.

Thanks all. Our dog sleeps in the kitchen so a stair gate wouldn’t work.

The push top bins are the only ones our lab can’t get into.

weegiemum · 09/09/2026 20:05

My labradoodle can open the brabantia bin in our kitchen. On an especially awful day when ds was 14 and Not Talking To Us he taught the dog to open it !!
10 years later the kitchen door needs to be shut at night/when we leave the house or we come back to an empty bin and redecorated kitchen!!
