Where does your dog sleep

Interested in hearing where your dog sleeps and if they sleep in your room / bed where do they go when you go on holiday.

OP posts:
Sgtmajormummy · 25/11/2025 22:48

Ours (mini schnauzer) has multiple beds.
A covered crate with a thick cushion in the kitchen. He goes there when life is too much.
A camp bed and blanket in the hall for people watching/listening.
A cushion he can carry around. Favourite position is close to my armchair.
He emphatically does not sleep on our beds or sofa. He meets lots of other dogs and goes on walks to dirty places. The idea of him bringing mud, sand, undetected fleas or ticks into my bed is repulsive. Dog bum and willy in the bed? Nooooo!

We put our beds on high blocks before he arrived and he’s never attempted to jump onto the sofa. He does come into the bedroom at 7:59 and snuffle at us, though.

24-hour dog sitter or kennels with his own blanket if we go on holiday.

Btowngirl · 25/11/2025 22:49

Downstairs, usually on the carpet but she does have a bed. Our old girl (17 year old spaniel) slept in the bed with us, often found in the morning between us, under the duvet with her head on the pillow. She was our first DD really. We have young kids now so our Goldie sadly isn’t upstairs due to the stair gates! It is nice getting ready and not getting fluff all over my clothes though.

dicdicnurse · 25/11/2025 22:51

In our bed. We tried when he was a puppy to have him sleep downstairs but after 6 weeks of none of us sleeping we caved and haven’t looked back since. He goes to a lovely dog sitter when we can’t take him away with us and she lets him sleep on her bed too.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 25/11/2025 22:52

Our dogs have always slept downstairs, in the kitchen or extension/orangery so they have plenty of space to move around. We have Pyrenean Mountain Dogs and like @Arran2024 with her Bernese, we've found that they don't want or need a squishy bed. When they're pups I sleep on the sofa to be close by; we've never crated, we just use dog gates to stop them accessing the stairs.

We don't go on holiday these days, but on the odd occasion that we've been away for a few nights, the dogs would always go with us. We could never kennel them.

QueenofLouisiana · 25/11/2025 22:55

He sleeps downstairs on his bed, wearing pjs in winter and snuggled in his blanket. He hadn’t worked out stairs and is happy there, otherwise I’d gave him upstairs.

Holiday, either comes with us and sleeps downstairs or goes into a breed-specific hotel. The hotel lets him sleep on beds, rugs, sofas etc with dogs of the same, or very similar, breeds. He loves it.

Do you mind if I ask how many hours she does per day?

Does she stay late at night?

I have a dog sitter helping out this Christmas sir is doing 5 hours a day and pets alone at night

I just hope they will be ok

Are you serious?

Alone for 19 hours of the day? And overnight?

No way in a million years would I leave my dogs alone at night.

Surely you can make better arrangements for them.

Sorry to be blunt, but bloody hell.

JDM625 · 25/11/2025 22:57

Mine sleeps on our bed but also has a dog bed on the floor in the bedroom. She has never tried to get under the covers, just sleeps on top of the duvet at the foot of our bed.

If we go abroad, a relative minds her. If we go away in the UK, she generally comes along unless its say a work trip. Some dog friendly cottages have specific rules about no dogs upstairs, no dogs on furniture etc so you need to check the T&C's closely before booking.

stargirl1701 · 25/11/2025 22:59

Working black lab. Sleeps in the kitchen. Stays with PIL if we go on a holiday that isn’t camping.

Missj25 · 25/11/2025 23:01

My dog sleeps outside my bedroom door on landing .
She has a throw I put down at night time on the carpet ..
No way In my bed , I like the smell of comfort off of my covers 😂 😂

halfpastten · 25/11/2025 23:02

Sofa. Gets tucked in with a blanket.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 25/11/2025 23:04

We dog share with DS. When he’s with us he mainly sleeps upstairs in the bedroom, previously he was on an old duvet on the floor but we have recently bought him a fur lined doggy igloo. Sometimes though he will sleep downstairs on the sofa. When DH and I are on holiday he is normally with DS and his partner, but if we go away together he goes to kennels, where he sleeps in his downstairs bed (a plastic bed with various blankets which are easy to wash).

sensitivesubject1980 · 25/11/2025 23:05

On the bed, squished as close to me as she possibly can - we literally spoon all night Grin

When we go away, she normally stays at home with DS1. He moves her bed into his room, but she she normally wanders off and gets onto our bed - and yes I do leave PJs that I’ve worn so she has comfort BlushGrin

QuirkyHorse · 25/11/2025 23:08

One sleeps downstairs in her huge snuggle sack but can open all the doors in the house and sometimes ends up in bed with eldest dd.
Other one is currently out in a heated kennel only at night but I hope to get her staying in the house overnight at some point.

Hedgesgalore · 25/11/2025 23:11

Mine has a very comfy bed on the floor in our bedroom, gets tucked in with a fleece blanket if its cold.

However, when dh is away (quite often a week at a time) ddog sleeps on the bed, not under the duvet though.

He likes to tuck himself up against you so he's like a furry heater, great if its cold, in summer he chooses to sleep in his own bed, sensible dog.

Ours have always slept in the kitchen but our older dog (12) lost his hearing quite suddenly and now is prone to barking if he can't see me. So he now sleeps on our bed, our other dog will wander between her bed and ours. Can't say I'm that thrilled but I value sleep above all else.

They come on holiday with us, never leave them.

Ha, are you me??

Ours have slept in the kitchen all their lives but the 14yo one has started barking in the night recently. Not sure if he’s lost, lonely, confused but a) didn’t want to leave him distressed and b) like you, value sleep, so they’re now both in our room.

Please tell me this is a typo and you’re not really leaving your dogs alone for 19 hours a day.

DinoLil · 25/11/2025 23:22

In my bed and if I go away, she comes with me.

fitflopqueen · 25/11/2025 23:24

Spaniel Sleeps on our bed, waits for her blanket to be spread out on DHs side, he was working away a lot!
Holiday time, she stays with family and shares their beds too.

CissOff · 25/11/2025 23:25

Both in our bed - one between DH and one wrapped around my legs. I love it.

They go to their beloved dog walkers when we’re away - they either go in with her and her DH or they may choose to sleep downstairs with their friends if they fancy that.

Icanflyhigh · 25/11/2025 23:31

Wherever she likes! Sometimes at the foot of our bed, sometimes with one of the kids, sometimes in her own bed - literally wherever she likes and is most comfortable!

stomachamelon · 25/11/2025 23:32

Pug sleeps right next to me. Bum, farting, snoring and all. She loves a lie in too.
When we are away the dog walker moves in for the week and she carries on tradition!

DuckDuckDuckDuckGoose · 25/11/2025 23:33

@thetallfairy is this a wind up? As there is no way a considerate dog owner would be planning to leave their dogs alone for 19 hours a day.

Tryingatleast · 25/11/2025 23:34

In the kitchen on a blanket

eta just realised you ask where they go when we’re on holiday- haven’t had many times away since we’ve had him - he’s been to three different kennels, loved the first one but it closed down, didn’t get on great at the other two. Have to try another soon as will have visitors but won’t even be for a day so hopefully he enjoys

Icanflyhigh · 25/11/2025 23:35

Also, 19 hours a day ia waaaaay too long to leave a dog. Ours is an amazingly well trained springador and I'm confirm we could leave her up to 8 hours I'd we needed to, but we max 3 as that seems fair on her.

She comes with us pretty much everywhere, but if we have to leave her, 3 hours is my maximum.

Menonut · 25/11/2025 23:36

At home dog sleeps downstairs on the couch. Her choice.

if we go away and she comes with us, she gets insecure and usually wants to sleep in the room/ on the bed with us.
likewise if she goes to the dog sitter she’s got them wrapped around her paw and sleeps in their bed! 🤦‍♀️
