New puppy really smells

Morning all, we’ve got a new pup, she’s 11 weeks. She’s started to smell. I bathed her two days ago and she smells again now. I’m not sure if she’s managing to wee on herself when we take her outside? I can’t really identify the smell, it’s like nothing I’ve smelt before.

it’s not fishy, it’s not poo, I think it must be a urine smell.

I don’t want to keep bathing her as I don’t think that’s good for her skin. Any advice wise people of Mumsnet?

I do a bit of a bed bath. Lightly bathe her thighs and belly with cotton wool and a tiny bit of hibiscrub (my breed is prone to getting yeasty skin on inner thighs as a baby). Then a dry off. She loves it and lies back! 😂 I think female dogs can pee a bit on their inner legs as a pup.

Has she has 2nd vaccination

Cadenza12 · 26/10/2025 07:30

No, you really shouldn't need to keep bathing her. TBH I think that I'd probably get her checked out at the vets, it could be a urine infection. Take a sample with you, they may well ask. My puppy is nine months and has a longish coat and doesn't smell. Well she does but it's not unpleasant.

bobcat1987 · 26/10/2025 07:34

My puppy 13 week boxer doesn't smell maybe it's urine infection

Houndymumma · 26/10/2025 07:39

Yes I do agree with others, if it’s a particular strong smell a check up is probably a good idea for a UTI. My pup doesn’t smell at all, (well apart from her lovely normal doggy smell).

Lennonjingles · 26/10/2025 07:44

When are you seeing vet for next vaccination, I would carefully watch her to see if she is weeing on herself. It could be from the worming tablets or vaccinations she would have had from breeder or could be food related or a yeast infection, either way if it’s that bad, get her seen by vet.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 26/10/2025 08:04

Is she a long haired breed? Because female pups have to squat low to wee, when they're little the wee does get on their fur. Please don't keep bathing her. She needs to learn to clean herself. If it's really whiffy, then just use an old flannel on her bits, preferably with just warm water, or a bit of vegetable soap - nothing scented.
Our Pyrenean girl is very hairy and initially did smell of wee occasionally, but now she is fastidious about washing herself and there is no odour from her. We never bath and she has a fantastic coat.

edited for typo.

Maybe ask the vet, puppies need checkups anyway when they're young :)

Does it smell oily? Does her bedding smell oily? If so it could be fear. That's a strong pheromonal smell.

However, puppies shouldn't stink. Might be time for a vet check.

JH0404 · 26/10/2025 08:17

What breed is she? Our old lab was pretty odourless but our cocker smells very doggy. Just the way she smells and we’ve got used to it 🤣

I was going to suggest the stress smell, i can't really describe it but I had a stressy fearful dog, and sometimes he smelled awful.

Op mention it to the vet don't bath her again you can give her a wipe over like a pp suggested,

My cocker smells "doggy" he always has even as a pup.

CousinBob · 26/10/2025 08:25

We had a rescue once who had an odd smell. It disappeared in a couple of weeks and I pit it down to the stress of changes in her life.
But yes, check with vet if still a problem when you go.

Genevie82 · 26/10/2025 08:32

Check if her dog food has wheat as an ingredient. I had the same issue with my dog as a pup and her coat smelled really weird and pongy, hard to describe but not nice. She also had runny poos sometimes. Went back to the breeder for advice and told me it was the wheat - changed her food and it ceased.

@Cadenza12its not awful and Dh says he can’t smell it, I do have a very sensitive nose, I think it does just smell like wee.

cloudbusting12 · 26/10/2025 08:40

@CoubousAndTourmaIetyes shes long haired. I’ll try giving her a little bed bath and just wash her legs and bits down and see if that makes a difference! I’ll pop the heating on now so it’s not too cold!

OP posts:
Coffeeishot · 26/10/2025 08:41

Just give her a wipe with a cloth see if that help is she long haired?

cloudbusting12 · 26/10/2025 08:42

@JurassicPark4Evano it doesn’t smell oily, I really can’t describe the smell. It’s kind of flat.

OP posts:
Coffeeishot · 26/10/2025 08:43

Could it just be "dog smell" ?

cloudbusting12 · 26/10/2025 08:43

@Genevie82im just in the process of transitioning her food over to butternut. The food the breeder was giving her was wolf of wilderness I’ll have a look now.

OP posts:
cloudbusting12 · 26/10/2025 08:45

she doesn’t seem at all stressed or fearful she’s really confident, shes exploring she’s sleeping well, eating at all mealtimes and is wagging her tail and playing a lot and following us all round the house so I don’t think it’s that.

OP posts:
cloudbusting12 · 26/10/2025 08:45

@Coffeeishotits definetly not dog smell. I’ve had dogs before her and it’s not a smell I recognise but I’ve never had a girl before.

OP posts:
cloudbusting12 · 26/10/2025 08:46

She’s a labradoodle
