lockdownlady871 · 25/10/2025 17:58

We have had two litters before and have chosen some good ‘non dog names’ by that I mean not human names. Actually we did have one called Bruno….
The mum is called Trouble and Dad is Ted.
many thanks!
ps they are not born for another week so don’t know how many boys and girls but just thought a good place to get inspiration

My sprocker is named Maple 🍁 she has a beautiful autumn coloured coat, we were originally thinking about conker but thought Maple was more of a female name.
Are they working dogs or are you breeding for pets.

lockdownlady871 · 26/10/2025 08:38

I love Maple!
They are working dogs but with other litters we have sold them as pets too

Won't their new owners want to name them?

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 26/10/2025 08:46

Our Sprocker is called Bramble. I also really liked other nature names: Bracken, Fern, Ash, Rowan, Wren, Swift etc

Im confused as well! As sprockers they don’t have ‘official’ pedigree names like a cocker would…

Chasingsquirrels · 26/10/2025 08:58

I thought breeders tended to go with collar colours?

user5972308467 · 26/10/2025 09:02

In my experience breeders put coloured collars or other identifiers on. Never heard of the breeder giving everyday names, apart from the pedigeee names that are in the paperwork. Then they often follow a theme - trees, city’s, etc and often alphabetically for year if they have lots of litters. Some breed organisations used to have a letter for the year too - not sure if that’s still a thing!

Pick a theme maybe? There’s a gundog page on insta where they pick a theme like games (Ludo, Chess, Uno, Seven etc) or famous detectives (Marple, Columbo, Daphne, Sherlock) etc. you could go for scientists, explorers, chefs, authors- something like that?

I am also baffled as to why they are being named when they aren't purebred and thus won't be registered.

Our breeder gave the pups names as well as their Kennel Club names and ours was Dave, which is cute and would suit him… but it’s also FIL’s name 😂🙈.

I also like the tree idea for autumn pups.

thisishowloween · 28/10/2025 08:19

Why are people so confused about why they’re being named?

It’s fine for the breeder to give them names to tell them apart and to start on training - the new owners can just change it - the dog won’t care 😂

Yep, our pup still has the name 'Yellow' on their vaccination record

I think people think, why bother if they're not going to be known by those names long term. Our second pup, we were matched when the pups were just over 5 weeks and from that point on the breeder started using the name we wanted so they learned their name early on.

mamagogo1 · 28/10/2025 08:22

When we got our dog we viewed at 3 weeks and was asked for a name then, we picked him up at 8 weeks and he already responded and came to his name. Definitely better to get their final names sooner!

We called our first ESS Bracken, as his coat was a similar colour. My niece has a sprocker called Rowan, and when our last ESS had a litter of sprockers we kept the blue roan; and called him Clover because he had a clover-leaf shaped black patch on his rump.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 28/10/2025 08:24

As soon as we’d paid our deposit and confirmed which puppy we wanted, our breeder asked for the name so she could use that for our dog. Before that, it was different coloured collars as is typical and she waited for the owner to name the dog before teaching a name.

why would you teach a name to a dog just to have it change? Go with colours and put collars of those colours on the puppies.

Why not? Not everything is that deep, lol.

Our beagle was named by the breeder and then he asked us if we wanted to change it before registration - we actually kept the name as it suited him but I don’t think it’s so unusual.

@FickleOcelot
We had a golden retriever called Yeller, after the film (an oldies, but a favourite)
