lockdownlady871 · 25/10/2025 17:58

We have had two litters before and have chosen some good ‘non dog names’ by that I mean not human names. Actually we did have one called Bruno….
The mum is called Trouble and Dad is Ted.
many thanks!
ps they are not born for another week so don’t know how many boys and girls but just thought a good place to get inspiration

As soon as we’d paid our deposit and confirmed which puppy we wanted, our breeder asked for the name so she could use that for our dog. Before that, it was different coloured collars as is typical and she waited for the owner to name the dog before teaching a name.

why would you teach a name to a dog just to have it change? Go with colours and put collars of those colours on the puppies.

Names are a human thing though - the dogs don’t care what you call them, they’ll respond to your tone of voice, not what you’re saying.

I can call my dog anything I want on a walk and he’ll look at me.

My dogs absolutely know their names, and a load of other words. It would be fairly hard to do any sort of dog sport or work them if they didn't know what certain words meant.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 28/10/2025 08:34

Exactly. @FickleOcelot @mamagogo1 @FancyBiscuitsLevel
Two of our puppy breeders started using the pet names that we had chosen very early on, so pups knew their name by the time we got them at 9 weeks.
Current girl was known by her registered name by the breeder, but we chose not to use that as her pet name.

Here is a whole load of different names for sprockets (see photo)

I didn’t say they don’t know their names - I said they don’t care what you call them. Rescues change dogs’ names all the time (or give them new ones if they’re strays) - it really isn’t important.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 28/10/2025 08:48

Oberon, Moth, Cobweb, Puck, Hermia, Helena, Titania, Bottom 😁

Oh my dog knows her name - she goes to a dog sitter 3 days a week who also looks after a dog called “pixie” the sitter sends us regular videos and my dog responds to her name, but not if the dog sitter says “Pixie”.

If I call upstairs my dogs name, she appears at the top of the stairs quickly, if I call one of the kids names, she doesn’t.

(the dog also knows if I say “Find [DD’s name]” or “Find [DS’s name]” which child she should go run to. We trained that with the correct named child having a bit of roast chicken which she only got if she went to the right child first, so ddog got that trick fast!)

BigGirlBoxers · 28/10/2025 09:03

Dr Sprock
Um ...
That's it
Peaked too soon
Can't think of any more.

countrygirl99 · 28/10/2025 09:03

Our sprocker is Pickle. Suits his personality.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 28/10/2025 09:26

@FancyBiscuitsLevel
Our dogs have always known their own names, each others name, same with our cats and the cats know the dog's names and vice versa (complicated dynamic in a multi pet household 😁) They also know our names and those of a few favoured people.

Don't quite understand the idea of a dog looking at you if you call it anything, but maybe it depends on the dog. Mine will ignore her own name when it suits her.

My point was more that it doesn’t matter what the breeder calls the puppy, because they’ll soon learn that their new owner calls them Fred, or whatever.

Rescue dogs often arrive in shelters with no name or get their names changed when they’re adopted and nothing bad happens as a result. Dogs don’t actually care what you call them.

Mine responds to all kinds of things - his own name, various nicknames, various questions and phrases - yes, he knows his name but if I started calling him Dave he’d soon respond to that as well.

@FickleOcelot
We had a golden retriever called Yeller, after the film (an oldies, but a favourite)

OMG! Ds1 was severely traumatized by that film aged 5! He's 30 now and still not over it!! (Spoiler: Old Yeller is wonderful, saves his owner from all sorts of danger, then gets bitten by a rabid dog(?), and has to be shot! Tough stuff!)

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 28/10/2025 18:39

Can we not have a photo?

lockdownlady871 · 28/10/2025 20:03

Just come back to this and seen all the replies this is awesome!

Zoom seems appropriate for a sprocker

PiglinBland · 29/10/2025 12:58

I'd definitely go halloween/horror themed if born this week.

Salem, Midnight, Shadow, Friday (13th), Spook, Hocus & Pocus if you have 2 that look alike, Fright, Fang, Spirit, Rune, Trick, Kruger, Hex, Magic, Wicca, Wednesday, Boo, Phantom... depending on colours/sex!

jellyfish2121 · 30/10/2025 18:31

Oh how exciting. I like these others have suggested: Maple, Willow, Bramble, Bunty & Pumpkin.

Plus- Autumn & Oakley
