Not going to tag everyone as I don't know who wants to join. Welcome everyone. 😁

I have had two roofers here this morning. After the initial barking at heads appearing over the ridge, the dogs have been so good. They've sat in the garden and watched them working. Greeted them every time they came into the garden and didn't once try to bolt out of the gate. I heard one of the men telling them to 'stay' as he struggled through the gate with a bucket full of water, and then telling them they were 'good dogs'.
They've just finished and as they were leaving one commented on how calm my dogs are and not like 'normal spaniels'. See. Not all working cockers are 'high on crack' and 'manic'. 😇😇😇

Beautiful weather here today. 🌞 I unexpectedly got my car back yesterday. 🥳
Off to the woods to walk the adolescent nutter until she collapses in a heap. 😂

@LandSharksAnonymous The vet didn't say. I thought it was a bug, as both P and K had a runny poo on Monday. But theirs was a one off and N has now been three days. She's lost half a kg too.
It's a bit of a struggle, to be honest. P and K haven't had a walk in two days, as I can't leave N. She'll vomit inside, but I think she'd be quite stressed by pooing in the house.

YorkshireFelix · 06/11/2025 19:41

@SpanielsGalore oh gosh poor N, and poor you! You’ve really been through it with them all recently. Fingers crossed the injections she’s had today do their work and she’s feeling better tomorrow.

More fireworks here tonight and V has been barking his head off so being high as a kite last night definitely worked. I have realised he only had 50% more than usual rather than double as it gets split over two meals, so I don’t feel as bad now 😄

LandSharksAnonymous · 06/11/2025 19:48

@VanGoSunflowers Just a nasty cold (one where I made DDs go to school with it but I chickened out of going to work when I actually caught it...)! But thank you!

I might give Alchemised a go then (perhaps not one for DD1 for Christmas though, remembering how dark I found the HP Fanfic version...) if it's been revamped slightly.

@SpanielsGalore Oh I am so sorry. P and K will be okay without walks, I am sure!! Is N eating?

@YorkshireFelix are you going to re-drug V for New Years? Poor V though, being so stressed.🙁

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 06/11/2025 19:51

I looked in at the Doberman thread, it was a very weird one @VanGoSunflowers I don't know why someone would suddenly decide "I want x dog breed" without knowing anything about them at all.

I suppose it's the "guard dog" aspect that makes neither Dobe nor PMD ideal as a first dog in most peoples eyes, although the Dobe is far more trainable as regards commands than the PMD (or LGD in general). There's four Dobermans near us and three do run off lead on the fields. The other is always walked on a heavy chain, although he seems quiet enough when we walk past... We've never had an issue with one, but I know people find them scary. Ditto Rotties, never had a problem with one, but maybe we've been lucky.

SpanielsGalore · 06/11/2025 20:05

@LandSharksAnonymous P and K are fine. They have the garden to play in and can entertain each other. I was going to take them for a short walk round the village this evening, but then fireworks started going off.
N had three spoons of chicken and rice this morning so I could give her her pain meds, but she's shown no interest in food since. Yesterday she still came running at the sound of a packet crinkling.

Don't know why that posted twice.

@SpanielsGalore how is N this morning?!

SpanielsGalore · 07/11/2025 09:11

@LandSharksAnonymous I'm going to phone the vets, as she's just had explosive, bloody diarrhoea. She eat most of the meds wrapped in ham, but is refusing the chicken and rice. She's a bit steadier on her feet this morning, which is good. She couldn't walk yesterday after the injection in her leg.

VanGoSunflowers · 07/11/2025 10:01

Good morning all

@SpanielsGalore Im so sorry hear that! I really hope they can get to the bottom of it and do something for her. I know we all keep saying it but you’ve all really been through it lately! You’re due a run of calm! How are you feeling?

@LandSharksAnonymous and you, how’s the cold doing? I hope you’re feeling better.

@CoubousAndTourmaIet That‘s what I thought was strange about that thread too. Poster didn’t seem like a dog fan really, but perhaps that wasn’t coming across in her posts. It’s interesting, the debate about the right breeds for first time owners. I would imagine it could potentially work out for some people, and they could end up with their perfect breed - as you have with PMDs, perhaps I could have been ok with a German Shepherd in the end but there’s not a day that I regret going for Labrador instead!

@YorkshireFelix I have been rubbish at catching up on the thread lately, so I hope V is ok with the rest of the fireworks! Hopefully it will calm down now the 5th is over! The ones around here the other night were ridiculously loud!

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 07/11/2025 10:34

I hope N will be okay @SpanielsGalore , that sounds really nasty.

It was an odd thread that Dobe one @VanGoSunflowers . I wasn't there on your puppy choice/GSD thread, but you seem to have made a good decision and Pablo suits you well. We also very nearly got a GSD as first dog but ended up with a PMD - she was basically bought as a working guard dog for my family's business premises though, not as a pet. We got the best of both worlds really. But a lot of it was down to luck and this tiny, runty PMD pup in a large commercial kennels putting a paw on my Dad's knee and gazing into his eyes. Otherwise I may well have been here with my 8th GSD now, who knows? My mum wanted a Wolfhound, not a Pyr, so that would have been a different story again. Sometimes things just fall into place and maybe you've ended up with your perfect breed too.

Hope you're feeling better @LandSharksAnonymous , just stay off those dog hate threads...😉

LandSharksAnonymous · 07/11/2025 12:35

@CoubousAndTourmaIet i have no idea what you mean 😇

On feeling better, thank you both @VanGoSunflowers ! Feeling a bit better so went into the office and instantly regretted it! 🙁

@SpanielsGalore so sorry to hear N isn’t any better. What did the vets say? How are you coping? It’s horribly stressful when they’re sick and you can’t help

LandSharksAnonymous · 07/11/2025 14:49

@CoubousAndTourmaIet @VanGoSunflowers I've actually ended up reporting that Doberman thread, as OP is advocating the mutilation of baby boys on it as justification for castrating male dogs.

Some people are seriously troubled.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 07/11/2025 15:00

Just had a quick read through before it's removed @LandSharksAnonymous she seems very... confused... 😬

And we thought The Doghouse was the sanest part of mn 😆

LandSharksAnonymous · 07/11/2025 15:02

@CoubousAndTourmaIet I think it's a he...perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't think a woman would make these sorts of arguments (comparing mutilation of a baby to castration of a dog)! Possibly a generalisation from me, but I just can't see a woman writing that

Edit: It's not a generalisation, but I cannot think of the word! Profiling? Assumption? Assumption!

brushingboots · 07/11/2025 15:04

I've just read through too – batshit, truly. The whole thing is pretty mad but that has taken a considerable bite of biscuit.

Ah, you're probably right, that would make sense. I've seen the name before - now wondering if it's one of the dog haters being obtuse...

LandSharksAnonymous · 07/11/2025 15:15

@brushingboots glad its not just me who thought it was lunacy!

@CoubousAndTourmaIet Oh I didn't recognise the name. I tend not to recognise names unless I like people or think they speak sense (other than those I butt heads with a lot!)

Back to actual dog related topics...how are Pupsy and Brie?

YorkshireFelix · 07/11/2025 15:16

That’s possibly one of the most batshit threads I’ve seen on here. I am impressed you managed to engage for so long @LandSharksAnonymous🤣

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 07/11/2025 15:28

Brie is a bit unsettled @LandSharksAnonymous She's been waking me at 4am needing a wee. She did go nocturnal during her first season also, so that seems to be a thing with her. She had her walk without the harness today because we think she's finding the belly strap uncomfortable at the moment, so we just put the martingale on. I have paranoia about her escaping the collar, but my chap is braver than me... She's two weeks in so we'll see how she is next week and run her down to the vets for a check up if need be.

As @YorkshireFelix says, you were impressively engaged, logical (and quite restrained) there 👏

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 07/11/2025 15:38

I'm about to get a bashing for having a dog that I couldn't beat in a fight 😟
Apparently it's an important criteria of dog ownership now. That's me doomed then.

LandSharksAnonymous · 07/11/2025 16:10

@YorkshireFelix @CoubousAndTourmaIet I didn't feel restrained! Perhaps it's the illness talking and I am just so 'bleughh' that even when I'm feeling feisty I have no sparkle.

@YorkshireFelix how's it going with V (and your DD - is all better now? Don't want to pry but you sounded a bit worried!)?

@CoubousAndTourmaIet Oh bless Brie. Is the dog next to you still barking or are you at least managing to sleep until 4am before Brie wakes you?

If beating a dog in a fight is a sign of the size of dog you should have, most people shouldn't even have a Chihuahua judging by the owners I've met and their lack of control over said dog! I can't even beat Satan in a fight, so I probably have no business having so many big dogs. People do spew nonsense, don't they?

SpanielsGalore · 07/11/2025 16:32

I stopped reading the doberman thread, because it was obviously either a wind up merchant or a complete moron. Neither of whom can be reasoned with.

N is at the vets, receiving IV fluids and meds. She hasn't been eating or drinking, so I didn't want to risk leaving her over the week end in case she took a turn for the worse.

Took the opportunity to take P and K to the woods for a good run. They both seemed very happy to be out. Quite mild here today too, which always makes a walk more enjoyable.

OP posts:
CoubousAndTourmaIet · 07/11/2025 16:45

Oh, poor little N @SpanielsGalore . Are they keeping her in? Very mild here too at the moment but still showery. Glad you had a nice walk with P&K.

Weirdly, the dog next door has stopped barking through the night @LandSharksAnonymous , he did it consistently for two or three weeks but now wondering if he was ailing or something. We didn't complain about him barking, but hopefully whatever was troubling him has ceased, for now at least. We can put up with it to a certain extent, but every night was a bit much 😫

I can't honestly say it's ever occurred to me that I'd need to fight my dogs. I think the day it did start to worry me would be the day I'd stop living with dogs.

LandSharksAnonymous · 07/11/2025 17:52

@CoubousAndTourmaIet goodness I wonder what made him stop barking!?

@SpanielsGalore Ohh poor N! Have the vets updated you yet? Will she have someone with her 24/7? I bet K and P enjoyed their walk - did they chase any deer? 😀

SpanielsGalore · 07/11/2025 18:30

N is home. 💖 She was only in for a few hours, as the vets shuts at 6pm and isn't staffed over the weekend. She's had fluids and managed to eat some tinned Gastrointestinal food. She looked a bit happier than when I dropped her off and even managed a little tail wag. Hopefully the meds will all kick in over the weekend and she'll get better soon. 🤞

@CoubousAndTourmaIet Glad ND's dog has stopped barking at night. Bad enough bring woken up by your own dog, let alone someone else's.

@LandSharksAnonymous There may have been some deer chasing. There was certainly some excited yapping as they disappeared into the woods.
Hope your lot are all OK.
