Please could you let me know if you have had any experience of Adevantia in Stafford or Hounds of Harvington for Cockapoos or Cavapoos.

Potential first time puppy owners here, feeling wary and want to get it right.

Thank you.

Perhaps either recommending certain breeders or advising against other breeders that should be avoided at all costs...?

But this is an anonymous forum, they can do both without the need for PM, and help others that come across this thread in future.

Possibly I'm just too cynical.

MonCoubousMonTourmalet · 09/08/2025 22:51

No, I do know what you mean @IchLiebeDeutscheSchaferhunde . It is all too easy for a novice dog person to be conned into something.

FluffyWabbit · 10/08/2025 03:40

There are some standard poodle pups for sale on the Standard Poodle Club website where the dogs are purebred and bred with integrity by professionals who want to maintain ethics, health etc.

Would highly recommend you speak to them about why purebreds are better, why going to these professionals is better and about the breed, in general.

You might find it's not the breed for you and they can recommend another breed or you will be reassured that you're getting a companion that suits your lifestyle with lifetime support and guidance.

Win/win.

WHY have I been looking at poodle puppies for the last 24hrs when I am definitely not getting a second dog 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ 🤣 If I won the lottery I wouldn't say anything but there would be poodle shaped signs....

According to KC website they have two categories of health testing:

"Good practice" - mandatory tests
"Best practice" - extra nice-to-have tests

interestingly the KC website has no "mandatory" (Good practice) tests listed in their breed A-Z for poodles but rather puts all tests under "Best Practice" (link here as the top column headers get cut off in my screen shot)

It is very unlikely that there would be no mandatory tests for poodles though, so this might be a data entry issue on their website?

Champ dogs website (yellow screen shots) seem to separate out the mandatory from best practice though.

Hmmmm... OP I'd just phone the local poodle club representative for your area and ask!

Have you considered an Australian labradoodle?

They have mainly poodle and spaniel (plus other breeds) in their lines. They are non shedding and many come from therapy lines (i.e. calm and cuddly). They are also health tested to the nth degree if you buy from an accredited breeder.

They also come in many sizes.

WomanInBlack78 · 05/10/2025 23:20

Know thread is old but wondered if anyone knew of a cavapoo breeder called Anna’s Perfect Pooches? A family member has just bought a pup - at HUGE cost, and is sure she’s a caring brilliant breeder, but looks like a glorified puppy farm to me?

SpanielsGalore · 06/10/2025 00:08

@WomanInBlack78 According to their listing on Pets4Homes, they sell 11 different breeds/crosses and currently have four litters advertised for sale. Plus two adverts for kittens. I would agree with your assessment.

LandSharksAnonymous · 06/10/2025 06:02

@WomanInBlack78 they’re just down the road from my PIL. They’re an incredibly well known puppy farm, and have - according to local rumours which PIL love to gossip about - been under investigation several times due to allegations animal abuse and cruelty. They had several dogs removed a few years ago.

Even without all that gossip, anyone breeding that many dogs at any one time is not putting appropriate care or effort into raising their dogs. So yes, absolutely not a good breeder and certainly a puppy farm.

Edit: Typo and small addition

Cockers are crazy. Show cockers slightly less so than working ones.

That’s a load of rubbish. I’m on show cocker number 6 and none of them have been crazy. That includes 3 rescues and three bought from crufts breeders. Working cockers are about 40 times more lively than show cockers though. A proper show cocker is amazing, gentle, funny and mostly lazy!

WomanInBlack78 · 06/10/2025 07:09

@LandSharksAnonymous @SpanielsGalore thank you… I found the pets4homes listing last night. Am so angry, clearly fleecing people who don’t really know under the guise of her “really caring”. They thought she was great. The pup has strong tear marking - I’d not have bought based on that alone. She said all cavapoos have it. I actually doubt that?
She is being recommended as a safe breeder. And has 5-star reviews. I feel really awful about it

LandSharksAnonymous · 06/10/2025 07:20

@WomanInBlack78 the tear marks aren’t ‘normal’ in either breed - they happen, but they aren’t normal. And actually are a mark the breeder has not been taking care of the dogs if it’s that noticeable already. Those breeds need attention paid around their eyes, sometimes daily gentle cleaning and careful trimming of the fur to stop the fur growing into the eyes.

People are fucking stupid when it comes to buying dogs. They’re see a ‘snazzy’ website or a ‘nice’ house and they let that colour their views. In contrast, you can bet if it was the same set up run out of a council estate in Croydon with no snazzy website, they wouldn’t touch it. It's awful snobbery: this is a nice house, with a nice website, so the puppy must be ‘good quality’.

Honestly, I’m sorry but based off what you’ve said and knowing that persons reputation, I think your family member should probably expect some pretty hefty vets bills in the future.

BlossomingSlowly · 06/10/2025 07:24

Not much advice re breeders, it’s so hard these days because every Tom, Dick and Harry says their puppies are from “KC registered parents” and “fully health checked”. Doesn’t mean a thing. If you go to view any insist that you see puppies with mum, inside the home they were raised. Also ask to see a breeding licence from the council.

We have a rescue cockapoo and wouldn’t change him for the world, he is my absolute joy, but I will second the idea of getting a poodle. Cockapoos can have a lot of health issues and temperament issues, primarily because of so many years of poor breeding. Our boy is a prime example, he came to us with luxating patella, recurrent ear infections due to allergies, resource guarding issues (thought to be genetic) and a whole tonne of anxiety. All of this is thought to be down to a mix of poor breeding and where he was raised. He’s doing amazing now, lots of work with a behaviourist and teaching him that he is safe with us, but his health problems will be something we have to manage forever. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve met so many beautiful cockapoos who are clearly well bred, but these are few and far between. Poodles are so underrated and absolutely beautiful dogs

WomanInBlack78 · 06/10/2025 07:39

@LandSharksAnonymous am so annoyed! They actually did loads of research in order to prevent buying from a puppy farm. This one was recommended by someone they knew. Pup is for a child so extra heartbreaking and clearly breeder knows how to get them over a barrel. Also, breeder has advised against insurance saying it’s a waste of money. I can’t say too much to the new owner as they’ve already got it now. And currently surprised the pups pooed in its bed overnight as apparently the breeder said it never would 🙄

Bumblebee72 · 06/10/2025 08:12

I never managed to breed a Cockapoo. It turns out the Cocka isn't short for Cockatoo. Those poor birds.

SpanielsGalore · 06/10/2025 09:27

@WomanInBlack78 So they give crap advice on top of crap breeding!
Poor puppy. I wish your friends luck.

WomanInBlack78 · 06/10/2025 13:25

Oh crikey. Not to hijack the thread (hopefully will be of use to other people) but visited the puppy… it’s absolutely fine and active when outside and on grass but petrified when inside or out on paving stones. I’ve never seen a pup behave like that (although am used to different breeds). It’s only just been brought home so hopefully will warm up. It’s supposed to have been raised “in a family home” but that would indicate to me it’s only been used to being outside and on grass. Poor thing

KingRoland · 06/10/2025 14:17

Hopefully all will be ok @WomanInBlack78

After advice on here, I decided against getting a Cockapoo and we are getting a well bred poodle puppy instead.

@WomanInBlack78 Sounds like they are going to have their work cut out with socialising the puppy. Poor little mite. 😢

Amazing news. Poodles are gorgeous. I worried about the puppy phase but my miniature poodle has been incredibly easy. Poodles are very smart and catch on really quickly. Please post photos. 🐾❤️

OP, sounds great. You’ve probably discounted this option (and want a puppy) but there is a charity, Many Tears, which rehomes dogs who’ve had a rotten life including “oodle” hybrids. I have not had a dog from this charity, I was merely perusing its website. And contemplating the horribleness of human nature that thinks puppy farms are ok.

ThePoliteLion · 08/10/2025 23:09

Also to add to the consensus: a friend bought a jackapoo from a back yard breeder. The dog is neurotic and the temperament isn’t good.

WomanInBlack78 · 09/10/2025 07:29

Yes Many Tears is great for rehoming poodles!

Update: to be fair, the cavapoo pup has come good. It’s very sweet, so far easy to train and good with another dog they know. They think the breeder is fabulous still.

There is an argument though that many tears and the like aren’t actually helping the situation.

by taking in puppy farms unwanted ex breeding bitches, sick and unwanted puppies they’re basically taking them off their hands making space for them to breed more puppies.

if they didn’t the farms would have to dump or euthanise their dogs- which would soon out them as puppy farms with no care for the dogs.

so I have mixed feelings. On one hand they are doing a great job, but on the other it means no one is doing anything about the mass farming of dogs, the unwanted are quietly rehomed and the public keep buying puppies.

ChicoryChina · 12/10/2025 08:22

There are lots of dog shows throughout the year you can go to see different types of breeds. Look them up to see when your local one is next held. It will be dirt cheap to get tickets and you will have a great time and will give you an idea bait lots of different types of breeds. Don’t wait until Crufts.
