A woman with a cockapoo looked at my miniature poodle and said, ‘awww cute a puppy cockapoo’. I said ‘she’s a poodle actually’. The woman replied ‘oh, so she’s mostly poodle then?’ I replied ‘she’s completely poodle’. The woman just looked at me weirdly and walked off. I’m still chuckling at this.

People do say the weirdest things. I was once harassed by a man who berated me for cruelty, telling me my St Bernard was underweight and he was going to report me. Trouble is, I've never had a St Bernard. I told him the dog was a Pyrenean of a healthy weight. But no, he remained convinced that I actually had no idea what breed my own dog was.

Was also told by an elderly woman, "oh, that's not a proper Pyrenean!" The way she said it just cracked us up, she was so indignant 😆It's now become a running joke - when our dogs are dirty or moulting we tell them they aren't a proper Pyrenean!

It’s amazing how total strangers become experts on your dog. 😂

I was out with my cocker spaniels. A man fussed them and then said, "Cocker spaniels. They're great dogs when crossed with a poodle." Cheeky fecker!

I have a small cookerpoo and tibetan terriers (a boy & a girl just in case it matters). Not only do many people think they are doodles, but numerous people asked if the cookerpoo is a puppy that I bred from the other 2.
Ahm, no, look again, they are completely different dogs!

VanGoSunflowers · 30/07/2025 14:52

Someone in my local town told me not to bother training my puppy because it definitely won’t work.

My bathroom fitter told me I should always keep his food bowl full so he doesn’t beg for food. Mate, I have a Labrador- he will keep eating and eating if I let him!

rainbowunicorn22 · 30/07/2025 14:56

The trouble is, there are so many x breeds now that it gets confusing what dogs are!
Sometimes my Chihuahua gets confused. I don't know why, but he looks like he should, but he has even been confused with a Jack Russell! I have owned one of those, and it looks nothing like one!

I have a doodle that gets mistaken for a poodle all the time. I don't get upset about it and I'm sure some people muddle their words or do strange things if they're embarrassed they got it wrong.

I'm sure no harm or offence was meant.

I remember many years ago I was at a fun dog show with my now 13-year-old terrier mix. He's half West Highland White and half companion breed mongrel. He also happens to be a brindle colour, as is often the case with Westies that are crossed with other breeds. I had a lady at the show insist to me that he was a Cairn Terrier. I told her that he wasn't. She insisted he was. I told her that if he was a Cairn, he was a very bad example of one as he has a curly tail and the wrong ear set! But she was insistent he was a Cairn 😅

My young springer gets mistaken for a Sprocker all the time, but to be fair she is tiny for a full springer.

A friend of mine has a cocker spaniel and a miniature poodle. She's always getting asked if she is going to breed them together to make cockapoos😅

Janeeyrre · 30/07/2025 18:59

@Ylvamoon how terrier are Tibetian Terriers? In terms of hunting instincts and sharpness?

Hoppinggreen · 30/07/2025 18:59

I met a woman in the woods at the back of my house when I was walking my dog.
She said he was a lovely well behaved dog that we had obviously trained well, which was nice to see because the person at THAT (pointed at my house) had one the same breed and he was awful.
We all have off days I suppose (poor DDog)

Janeeyrre · 30/07/2025 19:01

@Hoppinggreen that is so funny!

Catarinabella · 30/07/2025 19:02

I have a Dachshund JRT cross, absolute darling. Someone said very loudly, when their small child said “Ah, sausage dog” no fear, it’s a mongrel 🤣

We have 3 sighthounds.. 1 is super skinny. Have been accused of not feeding her... I tell them I've spent 8 years trying to fatter her up but she's still plenty of whippet!!

JDM625 · 30/07/2025 19:13

Recently walking my dog on a narrow, rural pathway and a woman and dog coming the opposite way. The usual smile, good morning, dogs sniff each other then you move past.

The woman didn't move on, but started telling me in GREAT detail, all about her dog's penile infection! His treatment, what it looked like, if I thought it was the right treatment etc? Umm, I have a female dog, have no idea about dog penis infections and suggested she speak to her vet!!!

Oh, and no, I'd never met her before!😕

They are not a Terrier, they are a utility dog.... in Tibet, they would sit on the monastery roofs as look outs for strangers and obviously bark if someone is approaching. (They have a very deep bank considering their size.)
They have also been used for herding yaks ...
So very little prey or hunting instincts.

LoughboroughBex · 30/07/2025 20:21

I had a woman ask what kind of dog my cockapoo was and when I told her she said “oh I thought he looked more like a spaniel crossed with something…”

Janeeyrre · 30/07/2025 20:51

@Ylvamoon thank you, they are such attractive little dogs, ive always liked them and didnt realise they were not a 'true' terrier.

deadpan · 31/07/2025 16:24

My dog hates men - actually he's scared of them but exhibits fear aggression. Pity because it's mostly men who look at him admiringly. Think of a beige coloured doberman with a bit of greyhound mixed in.
He's a rescue and is also aggressive towards other dogs. So we basically keep well clear of everyone.

Needanadultgapyear · 01/08/2025 07:41

I have a standard poodle and on Boxing Day a man approached me on the beach to ask if he was ‘an actual one?’.
He had grown up with Standards, we then had a conversation about how they are everything people buying labradoodles are looking for - non-shedding, trainable, loyal, family dogs.

I have a three year old golden retriever. She gets told a lot she is a cute labrador. I just nod...

Sorry, I apologise but my partner is one of those people who doesn't know the difference between a Lab and a Goldie. No matter how many times I tell him about coat length, he still doesn't get it. He also can't tell a Pug from a Frenchie 🙄

I met a woman once who told me she had a golden labrador retriever. When I questioned if she meant a golden retriever or a labrador, she hadn't got a clue.

I have a Goldie and someone referred to him as a Labrador Retriever.
I insisted he was just a Retriever but she said that is what they are called so I Googled and it seems that Labs are Labrador Retrievers which I did not know
Mine is still NOT a Lab though
