Stupid things your dog has done today

My dog is old and absolutely cannot tolerate the heat. So, no walks, indoors, blinds down, fan on. I'm doing all I can to regulate her temperature and she does wander up to me regularly for a spritz of water all over.

I keep refreshing her water bowl and thought maybe putting some ice cubes and letting them melt in it would be nice. Now, I know the risks of ice with dogs so I let them melt down until they were the size of a 5p coin.

What does she do?

Chases the three tiny bits of ice in her bowl and takes each one, individually, outside and spits them out onto the ground in disgust.

So that was a waste of ice cubes which could have been in my drink!

Any daft things your dogs are doing in this weather?

9 or 10 year old (rescue so unsure of exact age) whippety lurcher struggling to find any of the shady cool places I have created for her both inside and outside acceptable. Instead she is in the garden in full sun, panting....
And yes - icecubes in her water bowl are looked at with extreme distrust.
And one of those doggie cool mats - nope, not interested....

Ylvamoon · 12/07/2025 16:25

My old boy used to tip his water bowl all over the kitchen floor and roll in it to cool himself down.

RoseDog · 12/07/2025 16:29

12 year old rescue staffy overheating at every opportunity, she is being kept indoors, she overheated so much I sent Ds to Argos to get an air conditioner to keep the room cool she’s being kept in, she is furious but still alive!

DinoLil · 12/07/2025 16:36

Aren't they ridiculous?!

@TheNinthLock Mine has finally realised that going outside is not a good idea. This is after a few weeks of her crawling back inside after ten minutes. I did wonder about a cool mat (I've only had this rescue since September) but I've not heard a dog that likes them yet. Seems owners are using them instead!

@Ylvamoon I love that! I'd be tempted to join in, tbh!

Dinodog has just wandered off again to stick her nose out of the dogflap. But it is coming up to her teatime, so she's probably checking her bowl hasn't been filled. Wait, she's back, panting and wanting more water to be sprayed. I feel like I'm running a spa!

DinoLil · 12/07/2025 16:38

@RoseDog Yep, staffy here too! They're suckers for the sun but can't manage the heat. Idiot animals! Good idea about the AC but I can't quite imagine a furious staffy!

Mine has been going outside and sunbathing and then when she is hot enough she comes in and flops on the cold bathroom floor. Then when she has cooled off she heads back out again.
I shut her inside a little while ago and she decided to play on the sofa and ended up falling off it. She was rolling around upside down making happy random barky noises and playing with a toy. In her excitement she rolled too far and fell off the sofa! Of course she got up and barked at the sofa because - you know it’s the sofas fault she fell off 🙄🤣
she is a odd dog!

TaborlinTheGreat · 12/07/2025 16:44

If we put ice cubes in ddog's water he just barks at them. Even though he loves eating ice cubes if you just give him one Confused

Today he has barked for food while standing right by his bowl full of food. He was whining in the garden earlier because he had jumped over the little 1 foot-high fence onto the bbq area and apparently was unable to jump back over to get out. (He's a pointer and can jump much higher than 1 foot). None of this is anything to do with the heat btw. He's just a muppet!

ThePoshUns · 12/07/2025 16:44

My border terrier insists on lying in the sun. I’ve been putting wet tea towels on her but she shrugs them off. I am making her stay in and have a fan on for her but she’s wandering form room to room and won’t settle.

She keeps giving me the side eye and sighing dramatically!

TheNinthLock · 12/07/2025 16:49

@DinoLil Mine is a dog of very little brain, so I fear it may take her a while to cotton on....

DinoLil · 12/07/2025 17:25

These have made me laugh far too much!

Dinodog has also had a few tumbles off the sofa recently @businessflop25. She flops and does a diva pose with an arm and leg draped off the edge. There will be a doorbell on the TV or someone saying hello, she jumps, falls off and I get the evil eye.

@TaborlinTheGreat What a character to ignore a bowl of food! That's certainly not something mine would ever do 😂

DinoLil · 12/07/2025 17:29

@ThePoshUns Try a water spray, like you'd use on house plants. Mine now comes for a top up. Downside is that the house and furniture stinks of wet dog! Bleurgh. Nose blind? Impossible.

@RoseDog Oh the side eye. Mine has a proper resting bitch face too! And the 'FOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFF' sigh. Unfortunately, Mine is also sighing rather too much from the other end. Which is not helping with the overall aroma of wet dog.

@TheNinthLock Perseverance. If that doesn't work, ignore! 🤣😂

ThePoshUns · 12/07/2025 17:37

Water spray is a good idea. Although the shock might kill her!

Diggetydawg · 12/07/2025 17:41

Lying in the full sun, panting. Lying on the slabs which were burning my feet when I walked on them (I picked him up and put him inside when I realised) Not drinking any water, crying for his walk. Just generally not understanding that the heat is not his friend 😄

ExitPursuedByABare · 12/07/2025 17:43

My spaniel disappeared upstairs about 3 hours ago and I haven’t see him since.

I’ve opened the fridge and been to the toilet but still no sign.

DinoLil · 12/07/2025 17:45

@ThePoshUns if you do it from a distance, it's okay. My dog freaks out at everything, but this is going alright. Also, you can buy condensed cans of water for people to use. I've got one here called 'Sunny Day', probably from B&M and its a really, really fine mist of water. Much finer than a plant spray. I doubt she'd notice you using that from your full height just over her scruff and back, especially with a treat involved!

OP posts:
GreenDogDot · 12/07/2025 17:48

Catching butterflies and then bringing them in to the house to release. I’ve caught him tiptoeing through the kitchen several times, looking away with puffed up lips and sent him back in to the garden. Several times I haven’t caught him and found the poor things bashing around the windows in the sitting room!

DinoLil · 12/07/2025 17:53

@Diggetydawg They are just so daft. I suppose routine is their friend and they don't understand its too hot to walk or be outside. I saw a tiktok earlier of two women in padded jackets and walking barefoot to try and demonstrate how it is for our friends. But they don't know that anymore that mine doesn't know a tooth extraction means no breakfast at 7am!

@ExitPursuedByABare That would be a sensible dog to sit in the fridge. Especially with snacks. Toilet with a tiled floor, also good choice. Have you found your doggo??? Not joing the stupid club like hiding under a duvet???

@TaborlinTheGreat What a character to ignore a bowl of food! That's certainly not something mine would ever do 😂

He's weirdly un-food-motivated, and seems to be getting even less so as he gets older (he's nearly 11)! I put a bowl of food down and he often looks at it and wanders off, then comes back and eats (some of) it later.

Poobs2022 · 12/07/2025 17:58

It's not weather related because he's just a dick but my lab destroyed my ray ban case 😑

DinoLil · 12/07/2025 18:02

@GreenDogDot Catching butterflies?? And not eating them? They're still alive? That's quite impressive.
Mine ignores anything remotely mobile unless it's another dog or a cat. Flies, spiders, nah...

She does have SA and I'm training her with this. Today, I popped to the chemist, 20 minutes all in, to get a prescription. Blinds down, fan on, TV on. I'm watching her on the camera via my phone, had to apologise to the chemist for being rude because of dogcam. She said a colleague has her dogcam on all day!

Anyway, back down the High Street shouting 'down, get down' through the mic because she was climbing about. People must have thought I was mad! She was trying to get on the back of the settee, onto the windowsill and under the blind to have a nose outside 🙄

Thanks this is very helpful

DinoLil · 12/07/2025 18:07

@TaborlinTheGreat is that typical of Pointers? I've only had Staffys and they're just generally ridiculous.

@Poobs2022Oh no! I have an ancient rayban case if that helps? Probably from about 1991! Glasses long disintegrated but I kept the case to keep my £1 sunnies in!

OP posts:
DinoLil · 12/07/2025 18:13

@ThePoshUns You're welcome. You'll be able to pick up some of the canned water sprays from anywhere - B&M, Home Bargains, chemists. It's with the sunscreen stuff. But it's just water. I used to use it when my DC where small. It's such a fine mist.

Just a random online search, you can get it cheaper, but this is the sort of thing I mean...www.superdrug.com/make-up/face/face-cooling-mist-sprays/superdrug-face-body-cooling-spray-50ml/p/824028?gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22603647318&gclid=Cj0KCQjwj8jDBhD1ARIsACRV2TvSbN_tGftV_PRxKm1ZqdqGIlFxs-A83f9ajuR7UitoAjmSwOd0iDoaAquUEALw_wcB
