Stupid things your dog has done today

My dog is old and absolutely cannot tolerate the heat. So, no walks, indoors, blinds down, fan on. I'm doing all I can to regulate her temperature and she does wander up to me regularly for a spritz of water all over.

I keep refreshing her water bowl and thought maybe putting some ice cubes and letting them melt in it would be nice. Now, I know the risks of ice with dogs so I let them melt down until they were the size of a 5p coin.

What does she do?

Chases the three tiny bits of ice in her bowl and takes each one, individually, outside and spits them out onto the ground in disgust.

So that was a waste of ice cubes which could have been in my drink!

Any daft things your dogs are doing in this weather?

Mine has attempted to attack my hand held shark vacuum. I’m not sure if he wanted it to play with him or if he has beef with it

Spooky2000 · 12/07/2025 20:07

Yesterday evening took the rescue golden retriever I have on a walk, and some man was bent over in his car in the rear of it, with the door open. Dog went straight between his legs and peered up. Poor bloke nearly shat himself 😂

Oh - if your dog won't eat ice cubes people, have you tried frozen fruit or veg? Mine LOVES frozen broccoli, and it's an ace way to cool him down :) I give them as treats.

TaborlinTheGreat · 12/07/2025 20:10

@TaborlinTheGreat is that typical of Pointers? I've only had Staffys and they're just generally ridiculous.

I don't really know tbh. I don't think they are famed for a lack of appetite. They can be a bit highly strung, and are velcro dogs who sometimes have separation anxiety. Lots of them have a very high prey drive. Ours is chilled out (except about certain specific things!) and has zero prey drive. He was scared of the primary school rabbits and tortoises we looked after Hmm and seems not to notice pheasants, deer and rabbits out and about.

He is an unholy nightmare at the vet's though. They practically quake when his name is mentioned.

I've got fans in every room, a cool mat in the dark dining room, all the blinds down in the daytime and air conditioning in the bedroom, which is the only place he'll nap during the day. In our tiny gravelled garden I've got an outdoor mat, I've hung a sheet of aluminet over the washing line, propped up by all the sweeping brushes and mops in the house, to give him some shade; I've bought a paddling pool and filled it with cold water and floaty toys, and put a bath mat over the metal manhole cover thing so it doesn't burn his paws. Oh, and got him a new raised bed to allow the air to circulate.

Mine is currently refusing to eat unless I sit on the floor beside her bowl and hand feed her, one piece at a time.

noctilucentcloud · 12/07/2025 23:14

Mine has been remarkably un-pesky considering the lack of exercise - the heat must've made him extra snoozy. He did stubbornly refuse to go for a pee in the garden though until 3pm when he finally accepted a walk wasn't happening. He'll happily go any other time but not when he thinks he's due a walk!

abbey44 · 12/07/2025 23:49

Mine is enjoying her dawn and sunset walks, but not actually doing her business (we don’t have a garden, so this is crucial). 3pm and 3am though…..perfect times for a poo. So I’m either dodging potential RSPCA reports or sacrificing all thoughts of sleep. Yeah, cheers dog….🙄

Mine does this pretty much every day until he gets fed up of how slowly I feed him 😄

We’re at my mums in southern Spain for two months so obviously bought the dog.
he loves the space to run and roam, it’s doggie heaven.
yesterday evening DD and I were on the top terrace enjoying a drink and decided to go up the spiral staircase to the roof terrace, surrounded by 1.5m walls.
for the first time the dog decided to brave the stairs and followed us.

one minute he was peeking over the wall enjoying all he surveys, next minute he’d jumped the wall and was on the actual roof to the house.

DD ran around hysterically and decided to rush to the ground floor to either catch him or comfort him in his last moments. She couldn’t have made it in time but emotions got the better of her 😂
the next minute the dog had decided being on the roof wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be and had jumped back.

it was a real heart in the mouth moment !

last year he had a snake drop from a tree and land on his head.

needless to say the spiral staircase is now blocked off!!

never a dull moment here 😝

Sweetleftfood · 14/07/2025 14:34

Just generally hassling me to take him for a walk, when I obviously know it's too hot and even if I were to take him, he would walk to the end of the road and then plonk himself down. I try to explain to him but somehow he just doesn't get it 🙄😉

TheLemonAnt · 14/07/2025 14:37

Mine refused to drink from her water bowl unless I pretended to take a sip first—apparently it’s only trustworthy if I try it. Dogs are weird in the heat!

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 14/07/2025 15:24

Mine tried to eat a dead mouse on his walk this morning 🫣

2 year.old border collie, also attacks the shark vacuum cleaner. She would attack the mower and shredder, but we keep her locked out of the way,I figure she would be shredded! I put the air cooler on, she stood in front of it, thanks mum..

Rainbows41 · 14/07/2025 15:45

My dog will sit and literally beg for me to give him the ice out of my drink....so I put some in his water bowl...does he appreciate it? No he does not - instead he looks at it and me with disgust and walks off!

CoubousAndTourmalet · 15/07/2025 13:21

So today, she's sitting down the garden in the pouring rain, watching over two blackbird fledglings that are behind the low gate.

@CoubousAndTourmalet I always think Brie looks so mystical - almost ethereal. Like she wouldn’t be out of place in a fantasy novel 😍

Oddly enough, Yorkshire Felix said something very similar a few weeks ago 😆

It is probably true that I think of Brie as a wolf/bear/faerie creature much of the time. Given her levels of "obedience" it keeps my expectations realistic if I convince myself she's not a dog 😬

VanGoSunflowers · 15/07/2025 15:41

@CoubousAndTourmalet knowing me and my haphazard brain I probably read Yorkshire Felix’s comment and then forget but stored it away in the dark recesses of my brain and just thought it again 😂
Is puppy brain a thing? I feel so woolly headed these days! I keep moving things out of Pablo’s reach and then forgetting where I have put them 😂

Today I filled a bottle of water ready to pour it into the water filter and just caught myself before pouring it into the bin. Later, talking to the dog, I explained I was about to go and take a fridge. I meant bath.

Off topic but can I ask how you got him there as we are thinking of doing similar next year

Mydadsbirthday · 15/07/2025 23:13

I'm looking after PIL's dog at the moment while they're on holiday. He's been to us many times and is happy here and the DC adore him.

Yesterday he managed to get hold for his dental sticks of which he is allowed one a day, and scoffed the whole pack. He's never done this before. DH got the DC to run around with him in the garden and sure enough he was sick a couple of times there.

Has been absolutely fine and his dopey self ever since, with a few runny poos Blush

Le shuttle Folkestone to Calais then drive down. This time we only stopped once but it was tough.
usually we do two nights.
never had a problem booking dog friendly hotels enroute last minute depending on how Rafa is.
France is fantastic for dog friendly rest areas, some have woodland so he can have a good walk, but he’s always keen to get back in the car.
you could do the ferry but you must book early because dog friendly cabins go in a heart beat.

it’s definitely worth it though, our dog loves it here, and has had many adventures!!
