My dog is an absolutely useless protector

Lighthearted!

Back door was open as it’s a lovely day so she can come and go into the garden.

I was sat in the living room, all of a sudden she comes in barking and looking panicked, obviously wanting me to follow her. She keeps looking down to the bottom of the garden, barking at me, I follow her and see it.

A black poo bag flapping around on a bush.

She is still scared and gets behind me and literally pushes me with her head towards it.

Yeah, thanks love! You see it as a threat and so you push your human towards it while you hide behind them 🤣

Utterly useless! She eventually worked out it was okay when I laughed and told to stop being a twat, she very gingerly walked up to it and gave it a prod and then was fine.

But now I have confirmation that my dog would chuck me under a bus at the slightest hint of danger!

18 month old golden retriever, cute, but would be no help in a crisis.

These are my girls, 50kg St Bernard, 3kg Yorkie.

Guess which one hides behind the other when a delivery arrives/a seagull is in the garden/a crisp packet is floating about?

The little one (Mavis) sees off the offending item then goes and licks the big ones (Betty) nose to reassure her all is fine.

Awww 🥰 they are so adorable!!!

I’m glad I’m not alone 🤣 I’ve loved seeing photos of all your dogs.

I took my big dopey twat to the dog park yesterday. I managed to snap a photo of her just as she whacked her head on the doggy climbing frame 🤦🏽‍♀️ she wouldn’t go near it again the rest of the time we were there.

Mine used to be scared of feathers

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 14/06/2025 16:46

Mine used to love playing ball on the garden. Once a rebound hit him on the nose. Now of anyone picks up a ball outside he will run inside.

This was 2 years ago.

Still happy to play ball in the house or in a field, just not the back garden.

We used to have 2 bullies who would have been zero help there was an intruder. They would have just stayed on the sofa asleep. Now we have a working lab who is a whole different kettle of fish. Still a total moron tho.

At least she didn’t shut the door and lock you outside OP, that’s love!

We have massive lurchers. One is the jack reacher of dogs. Large, calm, lightning reflexes. Not interested in anyone except family. Has a 1000 yard stare. Unless he sees a puppy, then he goes all mushy. If you burgled us with a puppy, he would ignore you to play with the puppy.

Mine is terrified of empty drinking glasses. Full glasses are fine.

My kinda dog!

😁❤️ I thought Lurchers were sighthounds - don’t they bolt after small, furry things?

My great big floofy idiot dog would fancy himself a great protector. He launches himself at the door barking and makes short shrift of any junk mail. Any intruders in the garden eg birds or worse still cats will be taking their life jn their hands but he does make an exception for….watering cans!

He is absolutely terrified of watering cans and anything that looks like it might be one eg has a spout. He stays at a distance with his tail between his legs barking furiously trying to get it to go away. This is because once he was sniffing a watering can in our garden and a tiny frog jumped out onto his nose. Ever since then he thinks they all harbour such evil creatures.

Mine wouldn’t walk past a cat the other day, we had to walk in the road to get around it

user2848502016 · 14/06/2025 21:53

Also mine is scared of bins. Not in the house, the outdoor kind. So sometimes I have to tie him to the fence in order to go put his poo in the bin because he won’t come right up to the bin with me. One time a bin with a metal flap made a loud noise that scared him so now all outdoor bins are scary

@Slatterndisgrace yes, they do find small furry dogs very tempting and have to be told very firmly to leave it.

However really big fluffy lurcher is really quite scared by our very small fluffy dog in the house- she likes to stretch out in his bed - which is big enough for a polar bear:) whilst he pretends not to notice and does a swift about turn so he can pretend he didn't want to anyway.

He likes to glare and make faces at small fluffy dogs on walks - then when they fly into a rage yapping - wags at them and is clearly laughing as they get dragged away.

Smaller but still massive lurcher is scared of garden ornaments. He refused to pass a house with a big stone frog outside it, and hid behind me at the sight of a garden gnome. We had to cross the road, and he kept looking back and crying.
