Dog's face severely swollen

Welshwhales · 01/06/2025 14:47

My Jack Russell face's swelled up on Friday night one side . I thought she had been stung by a bee, yesterday morning both sides of her face were swollen . We took her to the vet who said it may be her teeth but as we were there I found a scabbed area on her cheek which revealed two puncture holes .
She had an anti inflammatory injection yesterday and is on antibiotics but the one side of her head seems more swollen today. I am starting to get concerned or maybe I am being impatient .

Aww, poor dog. No suggestions, just sorry.

PixieMcGraw · 01/06/2025 14:56

Hi poor puppy!
Have you been walking in woods or similar? Two puncture marks makes me think of possibly an adder bite. What did the vet say about the puncture marks?

Cluckycluck · 01/06/2025 14:57

Were any antihistamines given? I'd suggest giving piriton as well just to cover all bases.

RegularAmericano · 01/06/2025 14:59

Adder

Would OP have to take him back to the vets if it’s a snake bite?

Welshwhales · 01/06/2025 15:06

She's six years old, gosh I am wondering whether this is a snake bite now as I was walking in long grass the other day and to be honest the vet seemed unsure and I was the one who found the bite.

It is rare but it has happened to a friend of mine while were walking our dogs together in the local woods (quite small). He had to get anti-venom from a different practice because not all vets hold stock.
That's why the location is important - local park is more likely a wasp or similar. I would just take photos so you can see if the swelling is getting worse. Also keep an eye on breathing.

Dearg · 01/06/2025 15:12

I would call out of hours vets for advice. Adder bites can be fatal for small dogs. It’s unlikely the vet has access to anti venom but my vet advised carrying steroid tabs and Piriton on our many hill walks with the dogs.

Adders are common on the Scottish hills especially in warmer weather
At a minimum ensure you keep your dog hydrated and keep an eye on his breathing

RegularAmericano · 01/06/2025 15:14

It’s 100% an adder bite. Do not leave it and hope that it gets better. Get your vet to administer anti venom. Out of hours vets!!
it happened to my dog and I recognise the marks and the swollen head.
My dog was extremely poorly

PixieMcGraw · 01/06/2025 15:17

Not all bites require anti venom - that's worst case scenario.

HappiestSleeping · 01/06/2025 15:19

Adder bites are very common here (Hampshire) so I'd go for that as a high possibility too.

tinyspiny · 01/06/2025 15:25

If it is getting worse I’d contact the OOH Vet . Hope she gets well soon

Tulipsontoast · 01/06/2025 15:27

Adder bites are common where I am too.

If her symptoms have changed or worsened take her back asap.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 01/06/2025 16:29

Definitely worse in 2nd pic. Hope you are at/on way to vets now. Poor dog.

NoTouch · 01/06/2025 16:57

Our Labrador had similar once, came from nowhere, he was given an anti inflammatory injection and I think piriton or maybe antibs (it was a while ago) and it disappeared in a couple of days. Think it was a bite, or allergic reaction to something. Never happened again.

petermaddog · 01/06/2025 16:59

your vet is an idiot

Newnameformenow · 01/06/2025 17:02

Poor baby. How is the dog in itself? Hope you've managed to get to vet again

Yeah, I’d want a refund and put that money towards an emergency vet pretty sharpish. Poor little fella.

MoominUnderWater · 01/06/2025 17:11

I thought adder bite as soon as I saw the picture even before your description. Sisters dog had this (survived) and looked the same, can’t remember if he had anti venom stuff, assume so.

Welshwhales · 01/06/2025 17:50

Update she had an abscess which has been discharging .

Do you know how long it’ll be before the antibiotics kick in OP?

Dearg · 01/06/2025 18:09

Poor thing, that will be painful . Careful hugs from us 🐾🐾

Welshwhales · 01/06/2025 19:13

Hopefully they should start working now it's draining , I tried to clean it but she was in too much pain. Now thinking whatever bite she's had was there before Friday with an infection building up .
