All aboard Podsquad, it's Pod thread number 4.

In case you were wondering:

  • What is this (surprisingly) long-running thread about? A unique lunatic rescue Podenco, known as Pod. Featuring his pals, Stanley, GentleHowl, BabyPod, GentleBounce, Fastest and Princess and many more.
  • What makes you so special that you get your own thread? See above

Seriously, if anyone is considering getting a teenage/rescued/sight-hound/Podenco/all of the above and has NO idea what they're doing, please enjoy the previous instalments from the day we brought him home, to now, six months later. Posts will oscillate wildly from euphoric to mental breakdown and back again.

Here is thread No. 3 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5248472-they-love-a-bit-of-him-podlife?page=1

Here is thread No. 2 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5197068-the-pod-cast?page=39&reply=141216881

Good luck!

You’ve got this Hanging, there is no way those two will be harder to manage than Pod. Even with Pod in the mix. You’ve learnt so much since then, you’ll get through!

I like your maths.

Pod = 100% chaos

Melty + Wiggle + Pod = somehow less chaos due to some sort of freakish reverse synergy of doggy law

Well I'll be damned.

Well, that's the answer you've needed all along - Pod wants doggy housemates.

HangingOver · 27/05/2025 15:49

He's gone very cuddly all of a sudden

Wait till he realises they are not going home 😂

LadyGrillingSole · 27/05/2025 16:02

Pod's like "No, I love her most, cos she's my mum!" 😂

Pashazade · 27/05/2025 16:31

He might up his game now he’s got competition in the cuddle stakes! 🤣

OccasionalHope · 27/05/2025 17:18

I presume that’s Melty sharing your lap with pod. So sweet.

BruceLeTerror · 27/05/2025 17:26

That’s adorable!

spiderlight · 27/05/2025 17:28

That's lovely! It confirms my long-held view that there are very few situations that are not improved by the addition of spaniels.

HangingOver · 27/05/2025 17:50

Melty has never been on a sofa before. She is beside herself.

Melty has never been on a sofa before. She is beside herself.

Bless her, if she’s a calming influence on Pod maybe you could keep her and give her a lovely retirement…..

BruceLeTerror · 27/05/2025 21:29

I think now @HangingOveryou’ve got three dogs (those girls ain’t going home 😂)

rainbowruthie · 27/05/2025 22:11

Night report 🤫

No one has so much as grumbled at anyone.

If fact, Meltydog has barely used her legs all day, so much so DP carried her to bed because she refused to get up. Wiggle is a nervey girl. She trembles if Pod bounces too near her but she's very interested in him. She's also not above stealing pieces of ostrich from under his nose.

How fucking amazing is my dog seriously. Hes SO placid with other dogs, even thieves.

We also realised too late Wiggle is scared of the television, but after trembling through the first ten minutes of walking with dinosaurs, she stopped shivering and watched it instead.

DP insisted the girls sleep in the conservatory "for safety" although they all fell asleep together in the living room and the whole house honks already so I can't see what difference it will make. I've got a camera on them so I can check in.

I've booked the stinkers in for a shampoo and nail trim tomorrow with MILs blessing then we're all off the the field for a meet with the Pod squad. Pod make a few attempts to engage the girls in chase this evening but they just wagged confusedly (Melty laid down) so he could do with a run around.

The only bad news is Pods tail wound is infected, so he's back on antibiotics. Vets says it's quite normal for them to get a bit manky though and didn't seem too concerned. I've ordered many more bandages as they keep shooting off when he wags. Poor old boy. But what a fantastically good boy!

Fingers crossed for a quite night in the house of stink.

Even though our dogs (and a family member dog we dogsit 2x weekly) all have humungous, memory foam dog beds, they all like a snooze on a couch 😊

All dogs love snuggling up next to their people 😍. It's their rightful place!

Just saw your post! That's amazing, Hanging, even though his tail's gone manky Pod's being kind and sweet to his new friends 😎 Wonderful boy.

WiddlinDiddlin · 28/05/2025 03:16

I am so pleased its going well, maybe they'll be a good influence on Pod, and he'll give them some fun to think about instead of missing their home!

Fingers x for the manky tail!

OccasionalHope · 28/05/2025 10:33

Hope everyone is still happy this morning,

FeralWoman · 28/05/2025 13:05

I hope the night was uneventful and the girls will soon be smelling nice and clean. I love that Pod is suddenly more cuddly.

HangingOver · 28/05/2025 20:41

Pupdate

Had a long chat with my trainer this evening about a plan for the girls. He recommends keeping them and Pod apart more for everyones sake. He said what I'm reading as them being calm good dogs might actually be them shutting down and for gundogs this is the hugest chain in their little lives.

He also said Wiggle could potentially get hyper attached to me which tbh I can see happening.

I feel like the world's biggest asshole leaving them alone though.

I guess I don't really understand working dogs and their needs.

OP posts:
WiddlinDiddlin · 28/05/2025 20:45

I would expect Wiggle to get hyper attached for the same reasons Pod did, big change in circumstances and you're the obvious safety person - I don't really agree with trying to prevent it happening, its gonna happen, I prefer to try to build confidence and security so that they can form a more healthy relationship reasonably quickly.

I do agree with them not spending tooo much time with Pod though as its very easy for dogs to get very over famliar with one another way too quickly and then mistakes are made, and fallings out can easily happen.
