Hand hold please. Beloved Labrador hit by car and losing her leg

Hand hold please. Our lovely girl was hit tonight when we were crossing a road and her leg is not salvageable.
It was obvious straight away that the leg would not survive.
The vets are going to operate tomorrow when she is hopefully fully stabilised.

I’ve just come to bed to try and sleep but am just lying here thinking her legs been ripped off over and over in my mind.

I know long term she will manage as long as she recovers well but my poor girl.

This is so hard, I’m so sorry. I’m glad she’s being looked after and she has you to be with her though this. Keep us updated 🩷

SnowSnow · 22/01/2025 23:59

Thank you. Definitely super hard.

Was so strange coming home from the vets and her not coming to the living room door wagging her entire back end

How awful, there’s a three legged lab we often see on walks, it seems very content. I hope yours will be too.

Randomusername37258 · 23/01/2025 00:15

I've known a few 3 legged animals and it has never been an issue in terms of their quality of life. Only thing to watch out for is stability when they lift a leg to go to the loo if it's the wrong leg missing so she might need a prop up for a bit. It's a dreadful shock for you but I bet she'll come back from it quicker than you expect.

Floralnomad · 23/01/2025 00:37

Dogs generally cope very well with amputations , hope it goes well tomorrow 💐

Fleetheart · 23/01/2025 00:37

What a horrible thing to happen for her and for you. She will be ok! Dogs live for today, and she will adapt. But I don’t underestimate the shocking nature of what has happened. Take care and I hope she is home very soon with you and wagging her tail with you again.

SnowSnow · 23/01/2025 01:07

Thank you all. I’ve no doubt she will go back to being her nutty self once she has recovered and she will get used to a new way to walk and run. Just feel so awful about what happened and miss her and want her to feel ok.

She is terrified of the vets at the best of times.

Hopefully she will be home very soon.

In the meantime do you want to tell us a little about her ?
i.e. colour of lab, age and her name ?
but if you feel that would identify you it's fine not to.

Did the driver stop ? if so do you have his/her details ?

DiddlyDiddly · 23/01/2025 01:14

I don't understand. You were crossing the road together? Or she dashed into the street alone and was hit?

SnowSnow · 23/01/2025 01:22

She was on the lead and we were crossing a little access road that runs alongside a main road. An e-bike came out of no where and hit her and snapped her lead off her harness, which then led to her running straight ahead in to the main road in her panic or pain and getting hit by a van.

They did both stop but unfortunately I did not get any details as my dog got back on the pavement and ran and I had to go after her. I didn’t realise adrenaline would have such an affect as her leg was attached only by a small piece of skin so I wouldn’t have imagined a dog could or would run off in that state.

Just to add my friend who was walking with me stopped and checked no one was injured etc

Her name is Luna and she is a 4 year old black lab. We got her after a number of years of infertility and she helped me have some get up and go when it was tough.

We’ve since had a little one and she very much enjoys him sharing his mini cheddars with her 💕

Luna sounds lovely, I have had a golden girl and a black boy over the years.
Labs are such great family dogs.

SnowSnow · 23/01/2025 01:36

They are the best aren’t they

Totally normal that your upset and worried about your girls future but dogs adjust amazingly well. Our sons dog has got three legs, her fourth had to be amputated due to the abuse she suffered before he rescued her. She's super fast and honestly she's just such a star, so happy and walks for miles. We sometimes have to lift her onto the sofa but other than big steps and the sofa you would never know. Will be keeping you and your girl in my thoughts.

Friendofdennis · 23/01/2025 03:01

That’s sounds so shocking for you and Luna. Sending you best wishes

Glitchymn1 · 23/01/2025 03:19

That sounds very distressing, what a nasty shock. It doubds like she was lucky to survive.

I agree that dogs seem to take these things in their stride and adapt much quicker than we do. It’ll be strange for her at first but she will be ok. Wishing her a swift recovery.

Oh that is awful I am so sorry.

wandawaves · 23/01/2025 04:54

Oh my goodness, what a traumatic experience for you both. Your poor baby. I hope her recovery goes smoothly, and I hope you are OK too OP.

FiveShelties · 23/01/2025 04:56

How awful for you both, what a shock.

Hopefully she recovers quickly and don't forget to take care of yourself.💐

QOD · 23/01/2025 05:06

Your beautiful girl will be ok and after a little bit of recuperation she will be blowing you away with her new ways

biggest hugs coming your way, our dog is so special to us so I get it. Lots of us do. They’re an extra family member who are always happy to see us

be kind to yourself 🫂

Onetimeonly2024 · 23/01/2025 06:07

I am sorry this has happened to Luna op. What a dreadful shock for all of you. She will be absolutely fine though, I’ve had a couple of “tripaws” and they have all managed beautifully. She is young and strong, she will recover xx

Lougle · 23/01/2025 06:49

Oh I'm so sorry to read this. I hope she recovers very soon.

EdithStourton · 23/01/2025 07:39

I'm so sorry this happened - awful for you and your dog. But she will probably recover more quickly than you will.

If you go the FB page of Take the Lead dog training, he has a three-legged lab called Tink. She is so bouncy and active and jolly - seeing her charge around in some of his videos might give you some more confidence for the future.

modernshmodern · 23/01/2025 07:43

We have a 4 year old black lab too he's nutty but so lovely natured.

I'm sure she will be fine and adapt , she might be a bit less active than before but she can still be a happy dog.
