I’m trying and failing to come up with names for our new girl. So far
Minnie (the breeder said she isn’t!)
Ginny (reminds them of Weasley)
Hattie (like a hat!)
Izzy (nope)
Carys (not keen)
Aoife, Flora, Annie, Freya, Nessa, Lyra?
Help!!!!!

See I would call her Minnie just for the irony

I mean I once had a snake called Fluffy

Me too.

Like those huge chaps nicknamed 'Tiny'.

Hi Soubriquet! We are Disney fans. The thing is I’ve got what I think is the pick of the litter so they’re thinking of names to suit her stunning self in the show ring!

Yeah, but crufts winners often have a preposterously pretentious 'proper name' and then a nice normal name they're actually called.

Mum5net · 13/01/2025 18:12

MOOSE 🫎
And there is an emoji when you send texts about her

The only other name I think goes well with the other two is Violet

Hm...for all their loveliness, afaik wolfies aren't known for the sweetness of their smell.Grin

Mine are most offended that you say they aren’t sweet of scent.
Scratch that! Just lit a scented candle to erm add a little more fragrant fragrance. 😆
Yes she will have a kennel club name as well as her home one.

Oh I know!!! I used to work at a rescue kennels. We once had a Wolfie cross Great Dane come in. He was a huge boy. Gorgeous as hell but also smelt like it too

Ylvamoon · 13/01/2025 18:25

I'd go with Daisy... as you already have one ending in -la and -ow.
Dogs often only respond to the last syllable of their name.

I tested this on mine and there is some truth in it!

MumInTheMitte · 13/01/2025 18:26

Is she an Irish wolfhound? Then it has to be an Irish name Grin

What about Maeve (anglicised form of Méabh) after queen Maeve, who was a queen in Irish mythology

or

Molly
Aoife
Tara

Madra is irish for dog (apparently) could shorten to Maddie

Won’t work unfortunately. The first syllable in madra is pronounced mod, not mad.

Also, the Irish for a hound is cú, not madra.
A wolfhound is cú faoil (pronounced coo fweel).

minipie · 13/01/2025 20:08

She looks like a Beth or Bess to me.

If I had a wolfhound, I'd call it Oolah - the noise the aliens make in War of the Worlds. I could see myself hiking across the moors shouting "OOLAH!" 😆

I looked up medieval hounds’ names. Love Besye! Presumably Bessie. Claris, Clare, Damysell (Damsel). Some wonderful ones to choose from here. Please tell us what you choose!

tudortreasures.net/medieval-dog-names/

I just love ancient hound names. There’s classical Greek and Roman texts with lists of suitable names, as you’ve said medieval, 19th century, and similar right up to the modern day. And the really cool thing is how similar they are (especially as many of the names - eg ‘Bowman’ - are distinct from pet dog names). Seriously it’s 4000 years of naming tradition quietly surviving, and I just love it.

Ethiopianflower · 13/01/2025 23:05

Crói - which is Irish for heart. Pronounced Cree

ErrolTheDragon · 13/01/2025 23:09

The medieval link gave me a nonexistent page but using the search tool I found the hounds. There's some wonderful and weird names - some unflattering so not appropriate for wolfies lovely girl, but I was very taken with Olyfawnte

Ethiopianflower · 13/01/2025 23:10

Oops put the fada in the wrong place - it’s croí - easy to see I did lower Irish for the leaving cert

Mum5net · 14/01/2025 01:35

Fynke.-
presumably would lead to Stinky Fynke?
Best link ever @BoudiccasBangles
