Gahh dog has eaten Christmas pudding

First off, because I know this is the first thing people will say - he is already at the vet now with DH.

He's just eaten 3/4 of a large Christmas pudding out of a pedal bin with a flat flush top that he still managed to open (anyone want to guess what breed he is?)

He's at the vet now, and was there within 25 mins of eating it. Please give me good news stories of when your dogs have done this...? I'm hoping as we realised so quickly that vomiting will sort it?

Labrador? I hope he is okay - you did the right thing, getting him there as qui kly as possible.

throwaway24 · 31/12/2024 16:40

Yep - right in one! I know Labradors are greedy, and we've had several, but this one is unbelievable...

Usually fine if they vomit within 2 hours - the vine fruit will still be in his stomach. Vet will give him apomorphine injection to make him puke.

mitogoshigg · 31/12/2024 16:45

Firstly don't panic, secondly not all dogs are affected by dried fruit. The suggestion we should not give it to them is because some dogs are very susceptible to eating the chemical in these (others seem unaffected). The vet will induce vomiting and all will be fine except your bank balance (sorry Smile)

Ha yes, I'm expecting a big bill. Anyone know if PetPlan covers this kind of thing...?! He has the top level insurance if it makes any difference.

Our dog was at the vets Christmas Eve as he ate a lump of wood for no particular reason.

Dogs are just stupid and expensive but lovely

BiteyShark · 31/12/2024 16:50

Oh this is one of many things he has eaten but fortunately we saw this one so the injection was easier than the previous emergency surgeries for eating things.

OP petplan paid out for our previous surgeries so fully expecting them to pay out for the relatively cheap injection.

I am sorry OP, how stressful! My sister is a vet and spends the Christmas period helping dumb-ass dogs vomit. I'm sure he'll be fine.

Lilacbloomers · 31/12/2024 16:52

awh no poor thing! I’m sure he will be feeling very sorry for himself after some induced vomiting!

Ahh this made me laugh and feel a bit better! 🤣

Hope he feels better soon @throwaway24 , and yes the insurance will cover bin raiding , hopefully it won’t be too large a bill anyway .

throwaway24 · 31/12/2024 16:55

Tax - here's the furry bin himself

Knew it would be a Labrador! Mine ate two large raisin buns recently and we had the same panic. He was made sick and given charcoal to flush his system. Then blood tests a couple of days later.

Our insurance covered it!

doodleschnoodle · 31/12/2024 16:55

Ugh, typical! We've been there several times before: carrot cake with raisins in and some dropped grapes. DDog never bloody learns! Hope doggo is back home soon and you aren't facing too big a bill!

Namechangeforthis88 · 31/12/2024 16:55

Intrigued and concerned about what three quarters of a large Christmas pudding was doing in the bin.

SolarWinds · 31/12/2024 16:57

Our bill was less than £200 when our lab ate something and had to have charcoal in case of anything lingering in the system. It wasn't New Years Eve though.

Yep - right in one! I know Labradors are greedy, and we've had several, but this one is unbelievable...

My labrador ate 5 mince pies off the bird table as a puppy. And mum’s golf glove and 3 face masks.
His brother ate 3/4 of a raw Christmas cake.

Both little sods are still here. Almost 5 years old now and still hungry 🤣🤣🤣

CoolDreamer · 31/12/2024 16:58

Hi op, our dog did this a few years ago. I didn’t know you were supposed to take them to the vet & only found out day later when I told my friend what dog had eaten. The dog never vomited & was absolutely fine, we took her to the vet when we found out that Christmas cake isn’t good for dogs & vet tested her & said she was okay. Hope your dog is okay too. Stressful time for you x

Jingleballs2 · 31/12/2024 16:59

Oh no 🙈 good job you caught him. I had to buy a lockable bin for my labrador

throwaway24 · 31/12/2024 16:59

@Nextyearhopes 😂😂😂

God love em, they do liven life up...

Trallers · 31/12/2024 17:03

What a shame there isn't a vomit-inducing patch or pill that dog-owners can't keep at home for such occasions, only going to vet if it doesn't work or the dog shows signs of being unwell. I know realistically that wouldn't be sensible... but those big vet bills for a just a bit of sick!

V large pudding bought for a v large lunch but it turned out only two of us like eating it! I couldn't face eating any more of the leftovers. He ate it within about ten minutes of me putting it in the damn bin...

He will be fine, and probs starving upon his return....
My Pattertw*t has twice needed vet attention (once out of hours and once requiring major surgery) for stuff he ate which was not to be eaten and both times we were covered by insurance

😆
I was imagining it 🤣 to not only be at work over Christmas, but having an array of dogs coming in to vomit 🤣
