Gahh dog has eaten Christmas pudding

First off, because I know this is the first thing people will say - he is already at the vet now with DH.

He's just eaten 3/4 of a large Christmas pudding out of a pedal bin with a flat flush top that he still managed to open (anyone want to guess what breed he is?)

He's at the vet now, and was there within 25 mins of eating it. Please give me good news stories of when your dogs have done this...? I'm hoping as we realised so quickly that vomiting will sort it?

My two dogs shared a sultana cake between them -- the younger one must have reached it via the corner of the baking parchment, when it was cooling on a rack on the kitchen counter. We didn't know whether they had both eaten it, or just the younger one who I found with it. So both had the trip to the emergency vets to be made sick - via Uber as my husband was away that evening with the only car. Evidence proved that both had eaten it. Two bills for that vet visit. (Plus two bills for two lots of follow up blood tests). Both fine, though looked very sorry for themselves. And an expensive mistake.

I just knew this was going to be a lab. My friends lab grabbed a child’s sock out of the washing basket on 23rd, she tried to grab it but it was too late, he swallowed it. £240 and 2 hours later he came home right as rain and was rattling his bowl around 😂

Intrigued and concerned about what three quarters of a large Christmas pudding was doing in the bin.

Yes me too 😂😂😂 sacrilege

Not2identifying · 31/12/2024 17:12

I paid £315 last week to have my furry bin emptied (a spaniel). It was out of hours though. I believe your bill will be about £100 less. Today was technically a normal working day for most businesses.

What a shame there isn't a vomit-inducing patch or pill that dog-owners can't keep at home for such occasions, only going to vet if it doesn't work or the dog shows signs of being unwell. I know realistically that wouldn't be sensible... but those big vet bills for a just a bit of sick!

There is. You put one soda Crystal on back of tongue

First thing I thought too!

Sorry you are dealing with it. But he is gorgeous, so you have to forgive him 😍😍

Except it is risky making dogs sick at home, and can cause more issues.

there is a helpline you can phone who will do the calculations and tell you whether your pet is safe to stay at home or needs a vet. I’ve used them and saved me a fortune.

Well, firstly , he is absolutely gorgeous 😍 .
Secondly you have my sympathy, black lab owner too.
Mine did a small box of Quality Street - thankfully mostly wrappers ( DH puts wrappers back in the box 🙄). Apart from a vets bill and multi coloured poo's for a few days after he was fine. Still going strong 9 years later.

Hi op, our dog did this a few years ago. I didn’t know you were supposed to take them to the vet & only found out day later when I told my friend what dog had eaten. The dog never vomited & was absolutely fine, we took her to the vet when we found out that Christmas cake isn’t good for dogs & vet tested her & said she was okay. Hope your dog is okay too. Stressful time for you x

Ours was the same!
He has been in the vet more for eating poo

foxandbee · 31/12/2024 17:22

My brother's dog ate the best part of a chocolate cake. He was fine after visiting the vet for a vomit.

CMOTDibbler · 31/12/2024 17:23

While I was at the vet this morning with ddog1 (he has a treatment which the vet has to be physically present for and takes 45 minutes, so we get a long chat every week) she said they had a board up of all chocolate/raisin/other eating animals brought in, and that the vet nurses had vomit kits all ready to go. I was fascinated to learn that the injection doesn't work for cats, and they have to spin them round on an office chair to make them vomit

Coffeemmmmcoffee · 31/12/2024 17:24

Mine did this last year only he managed to parkour onto the kitchen counter via a complex channel of chairs and stools and snaffled half a huge Xmas cake. He’s only small so it was about half his body weight!

The vet had already had 8 in that day having eaten things they shouldn’t 🙈

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 31/12/2024 17:25

Our friend's dog ate a full pound of bacon which was destined for breakfast

Birdscratch · 31/12/2024 17:30

Poor thing is going to be feeling very sick from the stuff the vet will give them. On the plus side, his size and your quick actions mean he’ll get away with his bin foraging without any (other) damage. I’m very glad my dog hasn’t worked out how to open the bin. My last dog was the reason a touch-to-open bin had a weight on the lid.

MissM72 · 31/12/2024 17:32

Shadow ( another black lab ) had a mince pie one Christmas. Had to be of an evening so vet bill was big as we had to use out of hours. They made him ill and then gave him medication to stop him being ill. Lesson learned.

OMG - the spinning on a chair! I can't imagine any animal that would be more annoyed by that than a cat 🤣

God I'm fed up with our 20 month old. Nothing is safe, she'll eat food, shoes, handbags, clothes, rugs.

Yet she's so faddy with her own approved dog food. 🤬🤬

Birdscratch · 31/12/2024 17:42

I’m picturing a vet nurse dressed in a hockey goalkeeper outfit manhandling a very pissy, pukey cat

throwaway24 · 31/12/2024 16:47

Ha yes, I'm expecting a big bill. Anyone know if PetPlan covers this kind of thing...?! He has the top level insurance if it makes any difference.

I can happily tell you that yes, they do! Well, chocolate anyway 🥴

youandmeandadognamedboo · 31/12/2024 17:45

I dog sit, and one of my regular clients has a gorgeous Labradoodle, the little munchkin stole a sealed packet of an M&S spaghetti and tomato basil ready meal, he broke the seal and ate every single morsel!! The packet was in the middle of a kitchen island! Luckily, he was OK, no harm done!

Bit off topic but why were you putting Christmas pudding in the bin when it lasts for months? I hope your dog is ok and the vet bill isn't too big.

tedgran · 31/12/2024 17:48

DH, (retired vet,) says that a little piece of washing soda about the size of the top of your thumb will induce vomiting!

AuntieMillicent · 31/12/2024 17:50

One of my dogs once ate a HUGE onion that had somehow either escaped from the veg drawer or she'd managed to coax out of it.

I wouldn't have known, had she not done a spectacularly onion-y burp in my face some time later.

After remortgaging my house and spending my Sunday afternoon sitting in a poky vet room with her for an hour or so, she was fine.

Madcats · 31/12/2024 18:03

Do you not have food recycling bins in your neck of the woods?

We use these for (cat) pet food. It strikes me that these are tricky to open? https://www.simplehuman.co.uk/products/pet-food-can-medium?
