Gahh dog has eaten Christmas pudding

First off, because I know this is the first thing people will say - he is already at the vet now with DH.

He's just eaten 3/4 of a large Christmas pudding out of a pedal bin with a flat flush top that he still managed to open (anyone want to guess what breed he is?)

He's at the vet now, and was there within 25 mins of eating it. Please give me good news stories of when your dogs have done this...? I'm hoping as we realised so quickly that vomiting will sort it?

Ashamed to admit we have been to the vets with dog 1 and dog 2 three times this year, we have owned dogs for over 30 years and never had to go but this year we have a cocker spaniel puppy who’s last visit was because he ate 22 unwrapped chocolate flakes 🙈
dog 1 (8 yr old Airedale) ate a whole punnet of grapes
I can confirm petplan do pay out in these circumstances and the vets are very understanding of twat dogs

For the more supportive - many thanks indeed! Your posts made me laugh and got me over my worry. The furry bin is home, very sleepy but has parted company with the pudding. We have parted company with £248, so call that my payback for wasting food...

DDog is struggling to keep his eyes open but keeps forcing himself awake to properly supervise the steak being cooked for NYE.

I admire DDog's dedication to duty. Can't have that steak going awry or being mismanaged! Such a thoughtful DDog. Glad they are home safe.

CMOTDibbler · 31/12/2024 19:17

@Mirabai I guess the problem is it isn't many raisins for the bodyweight of a cat. My late lamented cat once stole all the chocolate decorations off the tree, took them to his special hidey hole, unwrapped them and nibbled all of them, so cats def will eat chocolate and it is toxic to them. I'm sure my cats would eat a chocolate creamy mousse with enthusiasm too

Brombat · 31/12/2024 19:19

My Patterdale x jrt ate an onion, the whippet ate a jar of zinc tablets & all 3 ate some very suspicious sausage/dog biscuits out on a walk.

All were sick after having the emetic injections (separate incidents) & all lived to tell the tale.

They normally puke again in the car coming home, tell your DH to either wait or put covers down.

awh no poor thing! I’m sure he will be feeling very sorry for himself after some induced vomiting!

My lab ate a 1lb bag of raisins.

The vet told us she'd never seen a dog so happy to be vomiting, he was wagging his tail and trying to eat the piles of intact raisins that came up!

The percentage of dogs who are allergic to these things is tiny

our lab has stolen so much over the years. Chocolate, a whole Christmas cake, muffins, flapjacks. Etc

never taken her to the vet and he’s never so much as had a smelly fart afterwards let alone any bad effects.

Yes , agree .
But the question I asked myself was would I be able to live with myself if he was the 1/100 that died & I haven't done everything possible to prevent it ? And the answer was no , so off to the vets we went

What a shame there isn't a vomit-inducing patch or pill that dog-owners can't keep at home for such occasions, only going to vet if it doesn't work or the dog shows signs of being unwell. I know realistically that wouldn't be sensible... but those big vet bills for a just a bit of sick!

Oh, but there is. You just need your dog to be on exceptionally expensive medication in the first place and for it to be the last pill in the bottle on a Sunday before the repeat prescription is filled for collection tomorrow evening.

Guaranteed to chuck up within five minutes.

I agree entirely. Grew up with our dogs routinely eating all our easter eggs etc

Randomontheinternet25 · 31/12/2024 19:37

The bill might not be that bad, I rushed two terriers ( leaving the third at home, 100% sure she hadn't been involved) because one/both had climbed up on shelf and knocked off my meds , pain meds all sorts and I couldn't be sure if any had been eaten.
Taxi ( leather seats "we don't take dogs" !)
So I've got both dogs on my knee rushed to the emergency vets who have the dogs a jab to make them sick .... Neither had eaten anything think it was less than £400 & was covered by the insurer no bother.
Hope your dog is all good @throwaway24

throwaway24 · 31/12/2024 19:37

I've just been told that the vet said he had to be pulled away from re-eating all the Christmas pudding that came out of him. What a champion lab... 🤯🤣

@throwaway24 I was going to say the same thing regarding my two, wrote it, then deleted! Dogs are gross!🐶😂

Thefastplodder · 31/12/2024 19:40

Dogs are so gross 😅 but pleased to read that he’s ok!

uptomyeyes1 · 31/12/2024 19:47

Gawd working cocker here - ate 750g of luxury Waitrose dried fruit mix- we found the licked out, snout shaped empty pack under DS3s bed. She was literally sick as a dog so we rushed her to the vet for the stomach pump. The vet presented me with photos of the stomach contents afterwards.... PetPlan paid up no problem. Two years ago on Boxing Day she ate a 350g bar of cadburys chocolate from someone's Christmas stocking (plus a Christmas tree ornament in the same sitting). Emergency vet did a calculation that the cocoa content wasn't high enough to merit an intervention. But she was totally wired for 48 hours and deeply uncomfortable. She learns no lessons.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 31/12/2024 19:48

Oh that is wxaxrly what my dog would have done. And to be fair £248 could have worse!

Mochudubh · 31/12/2024 19:49

This reminds me of the time I went out and forgot to shut the kitchen door. Came back to find the contents of the bin strewed the length of the lobby and the dog the picture of innocence.

Apart from the lid of the swing bin round her neck.

first it’s not an allergy.

second the mechanism is unknown. We don’t know why some dogs go into kidney failure after one grape, and why others survive.

issue is if your dog is one that gets kidney failure, fuck all you can do about it other than watch it die.

so the advice is to treat the dog before the kidneys fail, just in case.

He's beautiful op and I hope he gets well soon. My greyhound is forever trying to eat things he shouldn't too. It was terrifying when he ate play dough (even though it was a small amount) and on a walk today someone had left some chips on the floor and he tried to eat those too, ate one bite before I could stop him. It's exhausting never being able to let your guard down! 🐾

CluelessAsFuck · 31/12/2024 19:54

Mine ate a giant funghi that we didn't realise grew in back of garden. Jab in bum, vomitting, 200quid bill, charcoal mixed with food for a week. He's a small dog though. Also ate half of my DD's knickers. Jab in bum, vomitting etc etc.

bakewellbride · 31/12/2024 19:56

@Roysieboy yes mine is exactly like this, he's smart 😂only had him 3 months and have aged 3 years in that time! Luckily I love him to pieces so it's ok.

Ha ours is a working cocker too! This Christmas she got into DD1's stocking chocs while we were downstairs and ate some expensive Hotel Chocolat stuff and a Freddo and then spent a couple of hours looking very sorry for herself before rallying and trying to steal a selection box. Xmas Grin

Spaghetticonfetti · 31/12/2024 19:59

Oh poor boy! My dog (Labrador as well!!) ate 6 mince pies overnight once and I didn’t realise until the morning when I walked on the crumbs. I was sure we would lose him and I was beside myself (the mince pies were left by my mum but we don’t eat them!). I rushed him to the vets and they made him sick, and a few raisins did come up. Luckily he was sent on his way without being admitted and I was given some black tar stuff to goop together whatever was remaining in his system. It cost a bomb (£500) but I’m insured and at least he didn’t need bloods / an overnight stay.

I hope your boy is OK and home soon, @throwaway24

Cupcakey · 31/12/2024 20:00

My daft dog ate Tesco finest mince pies... ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ at the vets later and she was fine.
We call her knob dog. She's not a lab but a collie/ springer mix so a complete
Mad head.
Hope your knob dog is ok xxx

Sunshineandoranges · 31/12/2024 20:00

We had red setters but back in the day had no idea there were any foods dogs couldn’t eat. They were both very picky eaters so we threw away lots of uneaten dog food but the would eat human food .On one occasion one of the dogs ate a whole adult sized Easter egg, another got hold of an iced sponge birthday cake and wolfed the lot. Neither was unwell. Nowadays, especially after eating the chocolate we would have had to rush her to the vet. So my question is before we could google to check, did lots of dogs die due to eating certain foods. Onions is another one..all dogs more or less used to eat left over casserole or beef stew.

I love the way they turn their snouts sideways to get the traction on the chip 😂
