If your dog has a favourite family member, is it the person who spends most time with them?

Hope that question makes sense. I am meaning family members who live with dog. Not novelty people who visit like grandparents who are more interesting cos they are different. But in terms of who gets the dog on their lap or at their feet watching tv. Does it tend to be the perso. Who does the most- plays with them, feeds them, walks them. Or does that not factor?

I was definitely my dogs favourite for the first year of her life, but i cuddled her more and spent more time with her.

Now though she tends to favour my husband as he gives her more treats than i do and im the one who cleans her ears etc 😂

She loves my mum and dad as they spoil her, not really fussed about anyone else though!

Elizo · 22/11/2024 22:21

Yes. It’s me because I feed and walk. She sleeps on my bed. We hace a very strong bond

Heelworkhero · 22/11/2024 22:26

I feed, walk, train and play with my dog.
DH will very occasionally walk and plays most days, but he isn’t consistent with boundaries and doesn’t always read body language properly.

Dog is 100% my dog - wants to be close to me, sleeps with me, looks to me for reassurance/guidance and is obedient to me. Will often ignore DH’s requests for him to do things.

CarpeVitam · 22/11/2024 22:31

Aww, stop it...you're making me want a dog! 😁

Shudacudawuda · 22/11/2024 22:31

Our dog definitely favours me.
I WFH 3 days a week and I know she likes the routine of it being just us all day, she goes in the office to wait for me under the desk. I also do most walks and food for her. It's mostly me she comes to for cuddles. She goes to my kids and husband for playtime.

DataPup · 22/11/2024 22:32

Yes, both my dogs will choose me if given the choice, although perfectly happy with others if I'm not about.

Teeh · 22/11/2024 22:34

This is what I thought. I am finding my dog more and more devoted to me and she always chooses my lap. I like it but also would like her to have a great bond with dh and kids. But I think it’s just the way

Bluebellyhedge · 22/11/2024 22:35

Yes me. I trained her, do most of her care.
Im definitely her human.. She's the best.

ExceededUsefulEconomicLife · 22/11/2024 22:36

Well, it's certainly not me who does absolutely everything for him! I'm third of three. He's devoted to DH and if DD leaves the room so does he. He comes back once he knows she's safe.

alphajuliet123 · 22/11/2024 22:39

Cat not dog, but I work from home and facilitate all needs all day long. However I am obviously seen as her mother/spare human while my husband is the absolute love of her life.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/11/2024 22:39

Yes, I WFH 4 days a week and do the morning walk (run!). He mostly sleeps on my side of the bed and wants fuss from me more than others. If we've all been out, it's me he comes to first to say hello. I'm definitely his human!

DramaAlpaca · 22/11/2024 22:39

DH walks and feeds our boy, but he's velcro bonded to me. When I'm in the house he doesn't leave my side.

RandomMess · 22/11/2024 22:40

I am "the one" though DH spends more time with her, walks her more and possibly feeds her more. she also sleeps with him (my choice).

🤷🏽‍♀️

FoxFaceRabbitFish · 22/11/2024 22:40

I WFH with my dog so am the one to walk her daily during the week, give her most of her meals, take her to the vets and bath her when she needs one. I think she is a bit better behaved for me than my partner on walks because I’m very consistent with rewarding her coming back and we have a good little routine. But at home I don’t think she’s any less bonded with my partner, she likes snuggling up in between us on the sofa and is very affectionate with us both and and doesn’t really show any favouritism which is nice.

WorldMap24 · 22/11/2024 22:43

Of our household, the dog favours me. I walk her about the same as my husband, and he is the one to feed her each day. I do the nasty jobs like clean her ears and stick tablets down her throat. I think I'm her favourite because she spent most time with me as a puppy, I trained her, and I think she views me as the leader of the pack. She does love my husband too, but she only follows me around the house.
Including those not in our household, her favourite person is my mum! She gives excellent treats and helped a lot the first week we brought the dog home, as I was ill with the flu. They made this lovely bond, which is great when we go on holiday as I don't feel guilty leaving her with her favourite person!

Objectrelations · 22/11/2024 22:44

I have two dogs and they hang out with me, look to me for walks, love, reassurance, food. They play with my teenaged sons and tolerate being walked by them. The smaller one sleeps on my bed and the bigger one on the floor by my bed. If I am sad they seem to know and the male will butt his head under my arm and lean in. They don't go far from me on walks and are always noting where I am.

They are definitely my dogs. I do 95% of the feeding and walking.

However the male LOVES my ex partner so much he will actually yelp with happiness and start doing a boingy dance as he is hardly able to contain his happiness when he even hears his car. This love and loyalty is not deserved in any way Grin

pilates · 22/11/2024 22:44

Yes me because I spend most time with him and have firm boundaries.

LakeFlyPie · 22/11/2024 22:44

DDog adores me ❤️ He's a bit of a nervous rescue who basically chose me when we visited the rescue to meet some dogs.
He quite likes DH who is way more fun, walks him 3x day and rolls about on the floor playing with him every evening but he loves me more!!

MoreHairyThanScary · 22/11/2024 22:46

Dh takes the dog to work walks her most, kids feed her but she is 100% my dog sits at my feet on the sofa most evening 😁

BeMintBee · 22/11/2024 22:51

100% me. DH tells the dog “alpha is home”. He doesn’t actively seek out DH or the kids if I’m out and will just sleep on my bed. 95% of all dog care has always been done by me. Sometimes the kids moan that he’s not fussed about them but I just point out that they never put in the time so it’s to be expected.

BeMintBee · 22/11/2024 22:52

Caveat to say that ddog adores my brother which is amusing as brother dislikes dogs with ever fibre of his being and we have to put the dog away because he just won’t leave my brother alone.

StarDolphins · 22/11/2024 22:54

My lovely old Shih Tzu absolutely loves my DD & me the same. He seeks us both out. He gets his reassurance (&food!) from me but he will roll around playing for ages with my DD like she’s his litter mate! But he knows I stick up for him - if the cat walks near him, he freezes & looks at me to sort it!

chattyness · 22/11/2024 22:56

I do all the feeding and most of the play. My DH does the treats and we walk him together. He follows me around everywhere during the day, but at night time he shares himself, cuddling with his dad for a bit, then me, back and forth like that all night. If his dad leaves the house for any length of time he won't come near me and mopes around until his precious dad returns & then he goes nuts with joy. If I have to go out he cries while I'm away and ignores me for about an hour when I get back 🤷

HermoinePotter · 22/11/2024 23:02

We have a few dogs. The working collies only go to DH or another person who works them daily, they refuse to look at another person. They’re very highly trained and will only do certain tasks for those who know the commands, the two spaniels we have are the same as the collies. They don’t take treats or anything from anyone and are very aloof, even if I try to play with them with their ‘reward’ which is a ball they look at me like WTF?

Our (MY) working labs favour me in the house, much to DH’s disgust 😂. He’d happily have them live outside as they’re specifically trained to do a separate job to the spaniels and collies. They much prefer to be with me on the sofas but would work for anyone.

We have another lab puppy arriving in January, he’s going to be my first pet labrador. I’m often told I “ruin” a good dog by cuddling and mollycoddling them, DH has just learned to live with it but I’m determined this one will be my pet. It's quite a difficult situation as dogs like to be with their pack and we do have a pack which puppies want to part of.

Yes me because I spend most time with him and have firm boundaries.

I’m wondering what firm boundaries are?
