Hello PodSquad,

Thank you for being on this crazy ride with us.

Here's the OG thread if anyone wants to go back and laugh at how staggeringly naive I was adopting my first rescue pup: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

Could someone please explain who this dog is in my house and what they've done with Pod? Because he's been absolutely angelic today. Truly a wonderful, wonderful dog and even coped with my DF and DPs pal coming over for Sunday dinner and sitting up getting merry on red wine.

Or perhaps the collective will on MN have given me a SERIOUSLY needed good day. What a star. 🥹

Oh my giddy god...... | Mumsnet

I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog! I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and l...

@MontyDonsBlueScarf Oh I would absolutely do this, in fact I would recommend every single dog owner do this - it is so so easy for even those paragons of virtue doggies to lose that halo if we forget to do this (I mean I know they exist, I don't own one and never have, even the blessed saintly Deerhound maysherestinpeace had her moments, but I have heard tell...).

I don't think slightly uneven pupils is an issue but no harm in putting it on the list to mention to a vet is a bad plan. I do love that you've noticed, believe me... so many would not! (I've had quite a day of people at work being rather 'but but MY NEEDS ARE SO IMPORTANT' when their need is something utterly frivolous and is in fact putting a puppy in danger. I do believe that preventing a puppy eating glass tree decorations is slightly more the priority than having a pretty tree... but hey ho! I'll grump off to my hot chocolate now.)

Thanks for the Pod pics, they really do make my day! :D

Funny you say that... Hares are my all time favourite animal. I had a grey Belgian Hare called Little for 12 years and she was the absolute love of my life. Like when I die literally want our ashes to be combined so I can sit atom by atom with her forever and ever, that's how much I loved her.

Anyway, I remarked to my friend not long ago sometimes I feel like in Pod, Little has come back to me in dog form.

This is so beautiful. My current (and last) dog is my heart dog, so I get this. (I also think that Belgian hares are amazingly beautiful, although I've only ever had regular rabbits.)

eggandonion · 05/12/2024 08:51

Hares are beautiful. I'm not sure Pod would be safe around hares? I hope he's in charming mood today, Santa will want to put him on the nice list.

Funny, Pods and Belgies have a fair bit in common. They're both ridiculously long, leggy and with huge ears. They both completely insane, full of random bursts of destructive energy. I didn't know Little was a Belgie when I got her (they're usually red) and I didn't know anything about them. After a few years of living with her I googled the breed and distinctly remember reading a blog that said although they're beautiful show animals "they make for difficult house-pets, especially indoors" and I was like... ooooh that makes sense now. I love her still and I'm not exaggerating to say I miss her every single day. I've loved all my pets throughout life but I feel like a bit of myself died when I lost her.

Behold, the (in my humble opinion) most beautiful thing that has ever and will ever live.

eggandonion · 05/12/2024 16:50

I have never met a pet hare!

RumNotRun · 05/12/2024 17:08

I got a pet rabbit from PaH once as my partner and I wanted another one in addition to the two we had. The one we picked looked a lot more like a hare than a rabbit but I didn't know until today that pet hares were a thing. She was a vicious unfriendly little bugger, our friend in PaH even commented on how cantankerous she was. We named her Phaedra.

Months later, after she'd been living with Mogwai (our other female rabbit), Mog had babies. It turns out that Phaedra was actually male. I don't know if "she" was too vicious for the vet to get a proper look but it was a surprise to us!

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/12/2024 17:16

Pet hares aren't a thing, its just a breed/type of rabbit called a Belgian Hare.

Hares and rabbits are part of the same family but are sufficiently distantly related and different that they cannot interbreed/hybridise.

Oh God I accidentally bought one of these online for Bill when he was a teeny puppy and it was bigger than he was. He went through a three day period of loving it, when he was still waking up in the night and needing to be carried outside, and every bastard time I stepped on every bastard squeaker in every bastard leg 😄

obviously now he completely ignores it. But it's still in the toybox! its day will return.

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/12/2024 23:17

Ohhhhh we have a giant leggy crinkly squeaky octopus... it is still loved, it gets forgotten for a while then the Stick Dog pulls it out of the toybox and we're crazy about for a few weeks again, they do tend to cycle through their toys a fair bit.

HangingOver · 06/12/2024 13:47

Pod is having a lot of feelings today, loud ones. He is being, as Widdlin would say, a Shouty Kenneth.

We had a nice walk in the dark this morning although he did get interrogated by The Wolf Pack (extremely posh man near me has 5 Sammys - which 4 too many IMHO) which I think he finds intimidating.

We're battening down the hatches here as tomorrow it's blowing bloody 72 mph. DP is delighted as he does windsports so he will bugger off for the whole day while I worry.

Here he is having his feelings.

Oh dear, I've got a Shouty Kenneth here too, some shouting was done whilst I showered, and some more whilst I dried, and then again when the post came, then amazon delivery, then the car bloke bringing our car back... fortunately mines gone flop on her bed now!

There is certainly a time when she'd have been taking out all her Big Feelings on the furniture (but if she tries that on the blessed new sofa I have warned her I'll be repairing the leather with her own hide... !!).

This too shall pass!

Scampuss · 06/12/2024 15:10

Hope the feelings pass soon 🤞🏼

My bitey dcat is also a furniture biter, thankfully her jaws aren't big enough to get around most furniture.

spiderlight · 06/12/2024 16:22

Oh my goodness - your Belgian hare is beautiful!!

I had a Shouty Kenneth (or whatever the female equivalent would be) this morning as well, but she's currently fast asleep with one of her babbas (my teenage DS's stinky socks, which she adores). We're on a red warning for wind tonight and tomorrow which is a bit scary and will no doubt produce more shouting.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/12/2024 16:46

Do you mean he is slightly cross-eyed @HangingOver, just in certain lights maybe? Two of my Pods are ever so slightly cross-eyed looking which is why I ask, lol. I just think it’s the cutest thing ever!

My dog disgraced himself at training class with a big purple squeaky octopus... He was supposed to be learning 'drop it / leave it'. Instead he repeatedly threw the octopus in the air with delight til it bounced off the ceiling and then did pirouette twirls as he caught it. Definitely the class clown and did not win his kennel club good behaviour badge.... Love reading about Pod's progress, it's clear you have a real bond even though it can be challenging. He's lucky to have such a loving and dedicated human.

MaxandMoritz · 06/12/2024 18:40

He's quite the poser isn't he!

My girl lunged at another dog across the street this morning. She's nine and a half, should be past that nonsense.
